Penn Foster schools - Holly

Posted: Jan 04, 2010

I am currently finishing my schooling from Penn Foster and I guess I didn't do enough research before I signed up for Penn Foster and now I'm regretting it. Ever since I've been hearing all the negative comments about Penn Foster I don't even want to finish the course even though I am on the last lesson. Just getting discouraged and want to know if anyone took Penn Foster courses and found a job. Totally new on this whole MT thing and if you have any information about getting started or what I should do would help. Thanks.

getting started - how about

Read the posts on this forum and see what the others have been doing. also note that there is not much future with this profession anymore either.

I would look into something totally different if I had to start over again, but at my age, I am just hoping there will be work for the next many years.

Try a guidance counselor as far as determining what to do. I would go with a local community college if there is one available in your area.

If you are on your last lesson, just finish it up and hope for the best. There are a lot of people who graduate from the best MT schools and can't get a job. It's not because of the market, it's not because of the school they went to, but it has everything to do with whether or not you have what it takes to be an MT. It will show in your testing to the employer or MTSO that you are qualified regardless of where you got your training. Medical terminology is the same everywhere. Even learning basic formats for reports is good, but each company has their own templates anyway so you have to relearn formats. Every company also has different guidelines in the rules that they use when typing a report. Finish what you've started is definitely my opinion.

Hi Holly - I was looking at doing the same program with Career Step. I heard of Penn Foster as well. What is the basis for your negative impression of PF?

Also, what school have you heard instead was "top of the line" for the whole of the US? And how difficult would you describe the course you've taken?

Do you have the sense that few jobs will be forthcoming as a result of having completed it?

Thanks for your iput!

I'm taking a course in medical coding through Penn Foster. So far, so good. I'm about half way through but I am not expecting a job right away. It took me 6 months to find an MT job after finishing a course in medical transcription. These colleges are out to sell a product. That is their main objective. I believe if you have what it takes, you can find a job after finishing any type of education--providing you have the capability. There are so many who might desire to work in a certain field but it doesn't necessarily mean they have the capabilities. It's not something any of us want to own up to...but the fact remains. I personally know 3 different people who purchased MT courses and never finished because it was just "too hard." If we're honest with ourselves, we know what we're capable of and will choose our pursuits in that direction. Some jobs in the medical field may go the way of the dinosaur. I fear that MT may be one, but it also could be hard for many because they're just not cut out for it in the first place.

Coding Schools - Where Did YOU Go?
Jun 01, 2010

Okay, here we go again.....if anyone has attended a coding school in the last year, is attending a coding school, could you please post your thoughts (was it worth the money, quality, etc)?  I know several people are still on the fence as to whether to pay the large sum to go to a private school (Andrews, DeVry) or attend community colleges in preparation to take their credentials in coding.  I've been reading posts saying the education from all is basically the same, of course it ...

Licensed Schools
Aug 10, 2012

I learned from someone who found out the hard way that it's important to make sure whatever school you go to is licensed by their state. The information is supposed to be displayed on their website and any other catalogs or ads. If not, there may be a problem. The school in question would tell everyone their state didn't require a license. It turned out that the school kept moving not only from state to state, but from country to country and the state they had been living in did requir ...

Connection Between Companies/MT Schools?
Feb 07, 2010

Have to admit I'm pretty shocked by several of the posts on this forum, especially concerning how the companies are operating.  New to the MT world here, and guess I'm green.  Hadn't heard much at the school I attended except this forum was "too negative."  I now see there's a legit reason for negative posts about companies if these posters are being honest, and I have no reason to believe they're not. Just wondering how tight a connection the MT schools ...

Before You Commit To Coding Schools
May 16, 2011

Hi all, I just wanted to say, before you commit to a coding course, make sure you have enough time to study! I started Andrews School last year, and right after I started I found out I was pregnant.  I work a full time job and now have a new baby.  After I completed the first module and started the second module, I was so stressed out I needed a break, now I am having trouble getting back into the swing of things and finding the time to study.  My entire tuition is paid for and I ...

Coding Schools - Andrews
Jul 14, 2011

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search. Based on my training at Andrews, I have not had a problem with employment tests, passing the RMT and CMT, etc., and with the coding program, as long as I study hard  and do the assignments, I believe that I will have the same experience. Based on the excellent training I received at Andrews, I am beginning to go through the coding course. The ...

Choices Of Schools For Coding

I am trying to sort through the different options out there for education in coding - is there an online school that most of you would recommend?  I am officially out of  MT'ing after 20 years, threw up my hands, literally, gave up trying to make a living at it.  I would probably use up half of my savings for schooling, but after many months of trying on different "hats", so to speak, in the work force, my heart is pulling me back to the medical field.  Opinions??? ...

MT Schools Promising Big Bucks
Feb 25, 2012

First, don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to be negative about this in any way and wish any new MT success. However, with this profession dying like it is and even very experienced MTs just trying to eke out even $10 an hour . . . It really aggravates me all of these MT schools and courses trying to suck innocent people in with their high tuition costs, etc. The fact is that nowadays it is akin to going and paying x amount of money to go work for $10 or less an hour. These schools/c ...
