Does anyone know who does own/run the various MT schools? - Curious About Something

I was reading through the different comments below and now I'm curious about something. Does anyone know who actually owns and runs the various MT schools/programs/courses? Do we also know how long they have owned/run them?

I used to know, but things are getting confusing when some of them have been bought and sold more than a few times. It would be interesting to know.

They don't tend to make that kind of information easy to find, do they? I remember searching everywhere. You could call to find out, but then you will be getting sales calls from now on, trust me on that. E-mail is the same. You have to filter them out to stop getting unsolicited daily or weekly spam from a couple of them.

Call the Department of Business Regulation for whatever state they are doing business in. By law, the principals have to be registered and the state has to give you their name, address and phone number.

The big 3 should be easy to find out. We know The Andrews School is owned and run by Linda Andrews.

I'm really not sure about the other 2 because I haven't paid that much attention. Are they owned by medical transcriptionists?

M-TEC was founded by former transcriptionists, was bought by Webmedx around 3-4 years ago, now owned by Nuance.

M-TEC was formerly owned by an MT, but she sold it to a corporation.

Linda Andrews, who founded Andrews and still owns and runs it, was a very accomplished MT.

Andrea Anaya founded Career Step in 1992, according to info on the web. It says she was transcribing from home while caring for a toddler when she wrote the course herself. I have not heard that she ever sold it.

A couple of other small ones were started by and may still be owned by MTs if they still exist.

The matchbook and diploma mill schools are owned by large corporations that may own many similar schools with different names. Most of them had no more involvement with MT than they had with anything else they teach.

Of the schools mentioned, I would recommend (in this order):
1. Andrews.
2. M-TEC.

If they don't have real instructors that you can ask questions of, then you would have your answer as to where NOT to go.

Yes, you need instructors giving one-on-one feedback. You can't just take a terminology course and be a transcriptionist.

Andrews is privately owned (Linda Andrews) and has been in business for years, visit the Andrews School website.

M-Tec was owned by WebMedX but now that is part of Nuance, so I don't know.

There are many programs in community colleges, etc. Career Step is big, I don't know who owns them or why it matters. I think you need to do your own research on this one.

I learned from someone who found out the hard way that it's important to make sure whatever school you go to is licensed by their state. The information is supposed to be displayed on their website and any other catalogs or ads. If not, there may be a problem. The school in question would tell everyone their state didn't require a license. In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search. Based on my training at Andrews, I have not had a problem with employment tests, passing the RMT and CMT, etc., and with the coding program, as long as I study hard and do the assignments, I believe that I will have the same experience. I am trying to sort through the different options out there for education in coding - is there an online school that most of you would recommend? I am officially out of MT'ing after 20 years, threw up my hands, literally, gave up trying to make a living at it. First, don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to be negative about this in any way and wish any new MT success. I have been researching schools & certifications for coding and getting a bit overwhelmed! I have pretty much decided on an online course but now to decide which one?
