Please think long and hard about investing in training for this field. It's definitely not a good one to get into right now. Few jobs for those without experience (or with), declining wages, work going overseas or to speech recognition. Rates are as low as 3 cpl and no matter how good the school, you can't make a living at that rate.

Don't do it!!!!! Save your money or go another direction. The future of transcription in this country is in the crapper so to speak. You cannot make a living at it and are expected to put your heart and soul into it. Jobs, even for experienced MTs, are hard to come by.

As someone who made a LOT of money in MT in the 60s-90s, I would have to be honest and say DON'T DO IT. The field has changed radically. I was lucky to retire a little over a year ago. I would not advise anyone to go into this now. However, if you are dead-set on going it, Andrews is, IMHO, the only school I could recommend. Forget the matchbooks!

Food for thought - Way Old MT

Well, you didn't ask our opinion on the field, but I ditto what everyone else said. I concur with Old Pro that IF you decide to do this, go with Andrews.

I went to Andrews in the late 1990s and got a job right away upon graduating. However, after several years I chose to get out of the MT field for reasons you've already read here.

The MT companies know that school for turning out grads who will likely pass an employment test.

I would strongly recommend reading the archives here, but it sounds like you already made your decision to go into the field.
why does no one ever believe us? - ??

It's really frustrating when someone comes on here just determined to be an MT and we try to tell them what it's really like (a low paying menial dead end job that will soon be phased out completely) and no one believes us. We do this every day, don't they think we might have some idea about the reality of it?
Wondered that too - Time and again

I keep reminding myself that for every one who posts here and then proceeds to argue with all of the good ("Run like hell!!!") advice she's offered, there are probably 50 who come, read the forum, say to themselves, "Thank goodness I found this place and thought to check before making a huge mistake!" and go back to looking for a viable field... all without ever posting a word. (After all, if they've read even just the "New MTs" board, much less the rest of them, they really don't need to ask us any questions. The answer is all too apparent.)

I think that the few who actually go ahead and post either (a) Haven't bothered to read what's already here, or (b) Are quite certain that we're either just malcontents or exaggerating or trying to keep all these great jobs for ourselves rather than share them with the deserving new generation of MTs.

What puzzles me is why the ones in group (b) would bother posting and then arguing with us... but then, human nature doesn't always have to make sense.

I am having to admit that after so many years of warning people about the changes in MT, that when I see people coming on here and saying "Wah, wah, wah, I took my certificate from the Crackerjack Matchbook School of Transcription," I have no experience and no one will hire me--I just think "Would you like a little cheese with that whine?" Sometimes you just cannot protect people from their own bad decisions. Wah, wah, wah.
Well OBVIOUSLY...... - sm

We just have no earthly idea what we are talking about! We are this "secret group" who are making TONS of money and we want to keep all of this money to ourselves! OR, maybe they just have to touch the stove to make sure it is hot, who knows? I do know that I DEFINITELY wouldn't recommend someone actually going to school to be an MT. That is a complete waste of time/money. They should put their efforts elsewhere and get a start on a better career.

Don't do it. MT has gone from a good job 20 yrs. ago - to sweatshop labor in 2013! n/m

Actually, this is the first time I have been back to read all the replies... and I ma heeding your sage advice and not entering this field. I was just looking for a "part-time job" I could do from home, as extra income. I already have a full-time job ... I just want to make extra money, and be able to choose when I work... I thought transcription would be an interesteding option... clearly I was wrong and I want to thank all of you for your posts and advice...

Good Decision! - see msg

Yippee! Even if it was a good job to have these days, I wouldn't recommend working full time somehwere else then trying to learn MT.

Even after going to the best of a school, you would need time and physical mental energy to delve into it. A lot of the learning is on the job.

I worked non-MT part time while "going to school." Then I quit my part time work completely and devoted it to MT. There is no way (even back then) you can make any money just starting off part time, in my opinion.

Anyway, even though you didn't ask if you should go into this field, I'm glad people gave their opinion. I'm Way Old MT and got the heck out of this business after 15 years.

Even if you are one of the lucky ones that eventually lands their own clients and make good money, we are now expected to provide the dictation systems and everything and no benefits, so in the end after overhead, you do not make good money. Also, you have to put your life into it 24/7 to even get there eventually....

You definitely will not make much money working for the nationals.
