Schools Employers Recommend - Lilah

Posted: May 04, 2010

To apply for a job as a Medical Language Specialist employers prefer that your training was acquired from Career Step, Penn Foster, The Andrews School and others.  I acquired my training from Professional Career Development Institute, The School of Medical Transcription.  Did anyone find a job after graduating from this institute?

Hi, Lilah, I have been an MTSO for four decades and I can tell you that we truly do prefer graduates from Andrews and will hire them any day of the week. As to Career Step, it ranks, IMHO, a good ways behind Andrews and M-TEC. As to Penn Foster, as we used to say in Brooklyn, fuggidaboutit. It simply does not provide the training needed for today's MT world. As to the Professional Career Development Institute, I am really sorry, but I have never heard of them. Did you use the SUM program? How many hours of actual physician dictation (not actors reading scripts!) did you have? I would like to educate myself about it, and any info you have on the Professional Career Development Institute would be welcomed. Thank you. I hope you find what you are looking for.

You are an MTSO? What company? I'd like - to apply, please! Thank you.

I am just curious--what is your source for your statement that "to apply for job as a MLS, employers prefer that your training was acquired from Career Step, Penn Foster, The Andrews School, and others." Did someone tell you that? That is not the case with us or with other MTSOs I know. There is a difference the size of the Grand Canyon between Andrews and Penn Foster, so I really hope that no MTSO is lumping all of these schools together. What we require are the following: We prefer grads from Andrews and M-TEC, who can hit the ground running. We will not interview anyone whose program did not include the SUM program. All applicants must have a MINIMUM of five years of acute care experience (training, schooling and internships do not count toward the five years) and be completely familiar with the big four. People need good ESL skills. I am not going to post our name here; when we are hiring, we routinely list jobs on the Job Seeker's board. Realistically speaking, many of our staff comes from referral from people who already work for us. We do not hire newbies. I just wanted to ask the above question and also provide a little more practical information. Again, I wish you the very best of luck in finding a position. Keep your chin up!

You post "We do not hire newbies?" - how about.....

How about bringing some new blood into this inbred (oldies) community?

Newbies cost a lot for a company to hire - and train

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not an MTSO, but I have been an MT for 30+ years and used to have my own accounts, so I guess that would qualify me as a previous small MTSO.

And newbies end up costing quite a lot, in both extra time and training, not to mention full QA, and they typically will not get released from full QA for quite a while.

So I can understand both sides of this picture, why some companies will not hire newbies and also why newbies usually have such a hard time finding their first job.

Personally, when I had my own accounts, I needed an MT who was experienced and able to hit the road running. QA for them (the oldies) was basically for formatting, not for medical terminology or medical knowledge. I expected them to already know all that.

Why we do not hire newbies - Old MTSO

[ In Reply To ..]
We cannot afford to hire newbies; they require too much training and the learning curve is too high. The reality is that there are many, many MTS who are highly experienced out there who will work for the same amount money and can produce so much more. I do not appreciate your comment about inbred/oldies. It is cruel and unnnecessary. Maybe we are older, yes, but we have the experience and we are the ones who can produce. When the newbies get some experience, perhaps in clinics and hospitals, they are welcome to try. My past experience with newbies (with the notable experience of Andrews and M-TEC) has been less than stellar.

The old MTSO needs to drink more coffee! :) I mean to say with the notable EXCEPTION of Andrews and M-TEC. Their grads are welcome to apply with us anytime, and they do.
I apologize for my harsh expression, - how about
[ In Reply To ..]
I really do.
I also understand that newbies are expensive for a compnay. But doesn't this show that something is wrong with this profession, where newbies cannot be hired? Will this phenomenon not make the MT profession extinct or has to go into a completely different direction, namely total technology?

Your apology is accepted; thank you. As the other poster with 30+ years of experience stated, it just costs too much to hire newbies. It simply is not practical. And--and I hate to say this--so many of them have been sucker-punched by matchbook schools and expect to come out and begin earning 40K a year effortlessly. After all, isn't that what they were told at the infomercial seminar they attended? I am still hoping that before I shuffle off this mortal coil I will see someone sue the socks off some of these schools that have misrepresented what they offer. My heart really aches for the people who get taken in, because they are usually women (many of them single mothers) who do not have too much money. When I worked in the hospital setting, as I did for many years, I did train newbies and gave as many of them a chance as I could, just as my supervisor gave me chance long, long ago. Alas, times have changed. There is a lot wrong with this profession starting, I believe, with the corporate greed that emanates down from the huge nationals. They do not care whom they step on in order to get what they want, as has been proven time and time again. Unfortunately enough, some mid-sized MTSOs have taken note of this ruthless behavior and have apparently decided that if pushing and shoving others around will work for the gorillas and squids, it will work for the mid-sized gals and guys, too. So now we have a field full of corporate bullies. How sad. I think that MT is going to completely morph into something other than what it is now. I am so old that I can remember when we transcribed from those little red belts, and when we got our first self-correcting IBMs, it was a big day indeed! We thought those were cutting edge technology--and they WERE, for their time. I never thought when I was in college that there would be such technology as we have today. Whoever dreamed of such a thing as a BlackBerry in the 1960s? And yet I think it is the finest invention in the world. So yes, the profession will evolve and change. If you will take a moment to look at the Job Seeker's Board, you will find that many of the ads (our included) list a requirement for five years of acute care and state that we are sorry, no newbies. Contrary to popular fantasy, all MTSOs are not wealthy. I have a bottom line to meet each and every month. I have to have a team who knows what they are doing. We hire people with 5+ years of acute care/high ESL background because that is what serves the business and its clients best. Don't worry, gradually all of us old dinosaurs will die off and the next generation will come in. I hope they do so with kindness and compassion. As for me, I have 15 month until retirement, at which time I plan to spend some time in India, as I have always wanted to do. (And no, not to check up on Indian transcription companies--for purely spiritual reasons.) I wish I knew how to open doors for newbies. They are facing the toughest market that has ever existed. To that I would say that there is always room at the top for the best. Do not give up. Best of luck to all!

Thank you for your message. It sounds as if you and I are in the same generation of MTs, we've seen a lot of changes over the years. I attended school to get my MT training, but what I learned in school never compared to my first job, which was in acute care transcription. Those were the days when the management and staff had the time to work with employees who had the skills and the willingness to learn, there was no substitute for that experience. Many years and a few jobs later I have seen a lot of MTs come and go and I can attest to how difficult it is to train new people if they have not had the proper education. In many cases it has been cheaper to outsource the work, which is some of what we are seeing now. The schools do their part but isn't it also an issue of personal responsibility on the part of the student to learn the material? A potentially great MT can come out of nowhere and should not be overlooked simply because they are not an Andrews School graduate. I maintain that not everyone has what it takes to be successful as a medical transcriptionist, wanting to work at home does not make you qualified for the job.

Newbie who got hired - MTSO
[ In Reply To ..]
You are absolutely correct. I would not hesitate to hire a newbie from Andrews or M-TEC because I am certain that they will have received the proper education and can hit the ground running. To all you people out there who are considering going to a matchbook school because it "cheap"--please read this newbie's post. She (or he) tells it like it is, and I could not agree more.
when I was a newbie, I didn't get training at work and did fine - sm - sssdt
[ In Reply To ..]
The company that hired me knew I was a newbie, they simply had someone look over my reports for 2 weeks and then let me go on my own. I have had this job 6 months, I rarely get comments about errors, about once every 8-10 weeks. Graduated from M-TEC with a "low" GPA of 95%, so I can't imagine people who graduated from a good school with even better grades would be bad hires.
When you were a newbie - Old MTSO
[ In Reply To ..]
The school you attended proves my point. I have never once seen a grad from either M-TEC or Andrews be fired. You folks know your stuff. As I have said before, I WOULD hire a newbie from Andrews or M-TEC, but never from a matchbook. And therein lies the difference in the education you get! (See, people, it pays to invest in a good--not quick and cheap--education.) Congratulations to you and may you enjoy a lifetime of MTing.
