They have shot themselves in the foot with the new name search. - dnr

Posted: Oct 17, 2010

Too time consuming when searching for a doctor you don't know. Give me a break, Alt S for every attempt rather than just a march down the alphabet. I'm only willing to do it a couple times, whereas I would have probably found it with the old method.

Another upgrade to put Name search back to its original functioning, please! - alphamt

It is not keystroke-friendly. Another problem is that specalties are sometimes incorrect, or not current, so its confusing whether or not to choose doc, and more often than would like I take the time to research doc on web in addition. Does this qualify for MME line count (joke!)? Since it is the ADT screen why do we bother - no keystrokes counted here anyway! Not HIPPA or ME/MT friendly.

It's as current as it can get... - direct from client systems

[ In Reply To ..]
If I understood the email describing why they did the things they did, the new physician database comes directly from the client you are typing on. Apparently MQ used to store the names on their own servers. However, due to HIPAA, they can't do that anymore.

I don't know if you tried the update of 6.1 that fixes a lot issues, but since I've downloaded it, there hasn't been a problem with it being slow in any aspect. They also sent me a new computer that would handle it. All I had to do was ask.

All of us who have an MQ computer should be - dnr

[ In Reply To ..]
sent a new one that can handle this version.
MQ computers - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
As long as the Q is handing out free computers with XP, the rest of us are stuck with having to get refurbs. The Q will never update something that will make them give everybody new computers.

Don't understand. - Doctor names

[ In Reply To ..]
and specialties are readily available on the internet. What does HIPAA have to do with it?
I agree totally! - Old part-timer
[ In Reply To ..]
I think their explanation of why they have the slow and incomplete doctor search is a joke. I can go onto any hospital web site and find a list of the physicians and their specialties. Hardly "confidential".

I think they came up with this system so it would be automatically updated when the hospital updates their lists. Fine. I understand that. (Although that doesn't help much when you're searching for a physician whose name is garbled and you only understand the second syllable.) But don't give us this line about HIPAA. How stupid do they think we are?

re: dnr what does that mean - alt s for every attempt

[ In Reply To ..]
I do not do that. I expanded that line to see the entire name and if I am searching for a name that is difficult, I type the first letter or first 2 and then arrow down. If the name begins with A, you type A and then Alt S and you get every doctor that begins with an A and you just arrow through them. At any time you can add more letters and it will keep narrowing it down.

I didn't think it was that bad. ???

Change is bad - anonmt

[ In Reply To ..]
They have changed the functionality - to the MTs who post here, that means it is bad. I picture a bunch of 2-year-olds sitting in the corner with their mouths clamped tightly shut to avoid even the possibility of tasting anything new.

Flame away (after you grow up)

That's not how it works for me. - If I only type an A

[ In Reply To ..]
and then hit Alt S, it says there are too many results and it won't give me anything. I have to have more than just the first letter of the name to go off of.

If I'm not familiar with the name, and/or can't understand the dictator, that means I'm screwed because sometimes I really can't understand even the second letter!

then old search wouldn't help either - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If you only can hear last part, you can do wildcard with the % and then what you hear and do Alt S.

If it is that unclear, I would leave a blank anyway and do Ctrl Shift Q and leave note, physician name unclear, not spelled (just because of HIPAA).

Dont stress!
The problem I have with that is... - Old part-timer

Say you're looking for Dr. John Smith. On the old system, if you scrolled down through the Smiths, you might notice at the end, in addition to John Smith, there is a John Smythe. With the new system, you can't see all the S's so you type in "Smi" assuming Smith is spelled Smith and you never get the choice of "Smythe" and could be choosing the wrong physician, which for MQ is a hanging offense.

Since they totally freak out if we CC an incorrect physician, why are they hobbling us like this?

the old lookup was the same for this example - and...
[ In Reply To ..]
in this case, I would enter on cc list as (Last Name: Smith First Name: Dr. John) and then add a QA note that says "Please verify CC physician, dictator did not spell name"

It would be the exact same in the old look up.

You could also type John in first name and S in last name and you would get all John S physicians. So your example of Smith/Smythe would appear and you would still have no way of knowing which it was anyway.
I agree you wouldn't know which one - Old part-timer
[ In Reply To ..]
But whereas with old list, scrolling down you might notice the alternate spelling, now you wouldn't even have that chance, would only see one John Smith and might assume, since he was the only choice, that he's the correct choice.

With a name like John Smith, I would enter it like you suggest, but I've run into similar situations with names like Khan/Kahn and even more obscure ones like Sulliman/Soliman. Without seeing the whole list, you are at a disadvantage.

even if seeing the whole list, there is no way of - knowing...
[ In Reply To ..]
Always on Chan/Khan/Kahn or any sound-alike name, you need to put a blank line and do QA note that tells whomever reads it at facility to VERIFY who the cc is because we can be fined for HIPAA violations. It is not our responsibility of the doctor does not spell it and I would never try to figure out who he wants in there.
I can't explain it any more clearly - Old part-timer
[ In Reply To ..]
If you don't understand how seeing the complete list is advantageous, I'll try one more time.

OK, say there is a co-surgeon in the OB department and it sounds like Dr. Suliman. You check your list and there IS an OB by the name of Dr. Suliman. What you DON'T see is that there is also an OB by the name of Dr. Solomon. With your limited list, and the apparently logical choice of Suliman, you can choose the wrong physician with the best of intentions, whereas if you saw the list and realized there were two equally logical candidates, you would not choose one over the other.

And with that, I give up.
and I cant explain any more clearly - as well....
[ In Reply To ..]
If the dictator does not give a first name, you would not choose (even if you saw the entire list) which physician it is anyway! You would only type Dr. _____ in the cc list and leave a not that says "Please verify cc physician, not spelled by dictator, sounds like Suliman/Solomon"

OK, then one final question - Old part-timer
[ In Reply To ..]
In your world, a hospital that you type for quite often has a Dr. Rumplestiltskin, a family physician. At the end of a report, the dictator says "please send a copy of this report to the patient's family physician, Dr. Rumplestiltskin". I assume with your logic, you don't CC Dr. Rumplestiltskin, since they neither gave you a first name nor spelled it.

With that attitude, is there EVER a physician that you DO find?
sm - nottryingtoarguewithyouhere
[ In Reply To ..]
I would type Dr. Rumplestiltskin and then type a QA note that says "please verify cc physician" since no first name was given.
Even if there is a physician on your list by the name of Dr. Rumplestiltskin, if you have no first name, you don't know if this doctor is from a hospital in another state, or another county. This patient might be visiting family from out of town. We are not supposed to guess. If you entered whomever was on the list, it could be a HIPAA violation and you could get fined. It is not our job to guess! I am trying to help you here... not argue with you.
In that case - Old part-timer
[ In Reply To ..]
No wonder the new physician look-up doesn't bother you. You would have absolutely no reason to EVER look up a physician's name. If I only used a physician's name that was spelled for me, first and last, I would probably go for weeks without having to use the physician list.

Way to cover your butt, but I think we ARE supposed to use our heads and I think if every physician came back to them blank, they wouldn't accept the excuse "But they didn't spell it for me, first and last name!"
thats the breaks I guess - of being fined 25,000!
[ In Reply To ..]
You can lose your job for guessing, you know!
Above poster is correct - HIPAA video
[ In Reply To ..]
The only time you would actually choose a physician off the list is if they gave you the first and last name and said the department and referred to the physician in the report and the hospital and you were familiar with the account. Other than that, never ever choose off the list as the HIPAA video very clearly stated. Guessing is so not worth the fine.
I agree. - Seeing the list is
[ In Reply To ..]
very helpful for situations like that.

And no, you wouldn't pick one over the other without knowing for sure which one was correct, but without the list, you wouldn't know there was an alternative spelling to begin with.

Very beneficial indeed.
it does not matter - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
if only last name was given, you do not need a list.... YOU TYPE DR. _____

You never even have to open the doctor list when no first name is given.

I was so peeved when I put in the first name - dnr

[ In Reply To ..]
and nothing came up! It is a foreign name, but I know how to spell it. So, I just said sc* it and left a blank. I was doing an account I was not familiar with. When I looked at what QA had put (100% QA dictator), there it was, the same first name, spelled exactly as I did.

Swine Flu Shot?
Apr 14, 2010

Has anyone gotten the swine flu shot, as in those working in hospitals or in home.  They say it is on the rise again and I am debating on whether to get it.  I work at home, so no risk from hospitals, but I do have kids in school to bring it home to me.  They say the 30-somethings (me) get a VERY bad case of it and the kids are usually fine?  So much info and so many decisions, makes you want to wear a mask on a day to day basis. ...

Went to the doctor's office this morning to get my tetanus shot updated because I fell the other day and cut myself and Dr. said my last tetanus shot was 10 years ago.  When I told them I did not have any insurance that it would cost me $170.00 because they were required to charge an "administrative fee" (hospital-owned practice).  I just about swallowed my tongue!  Fortunately the lady checking me in suggested I go to the Health Department and I could get it m ...

OK, here's the scoop.
