Went to the doctor's office this morning to get my tetanus shot updated because I fell the other day and cut myself and Dr. said my last tetanus shot was 10 years ago. When I told them I did not have any insurance that it would cost me $170.00 because they were required to charge an "administrative fee" (hospital-owned practice). I just about swallowed my tongue! Fortunately the lady checking me in suggested I go to the Health Department and I could get it much cheaper. Ended up getting it for $25.00! I really HATE what health care is becoming!

Honestly, it's not necessarily the healthcare, it is - the freaking insurance companies

There is so much admin work involved in insurance billing it's not even funny. I did it part time for a counseling practice. We had 25 counselors, but just about all of them were part time. We only had 4 therapists who carried what would be considered a full time load. We had 3 admin people, though. One worked 32 hours a week, I worked 14 hours a week and the other one worked 24 hours a week. Just to do the insurance billing. We had another admin person who was the "office manager" and took care of all of the other stuff. It was nuts.

I'm not saying that healthcare is in good shape, but I think the doctors get blamed for a lot of it when it's because they have to pay for the admin staff to bill the insurance companies and they have to pay for the malpractice insurance which is ridonkulously expensive.

In most communities, the Health Department is the best place to get shots of all kinds if you don't have insurance.

OK, here's the scoop.
