It may be a shot in the dark but - birdsong

Does anyone know of a stable company and/or open position where a long-time, acute care/experienced MT could be an employee with benefits and make more than $12-13/hr?  Prefer straight transcription over editing.  I can wait several months as I am currently employed.     I

You will see a lot of things on this board, but in my 20 years, I am going to walk away from this career after I quit later this year. I absolutely detest the way the companies have treated us. I have woken up to no benefits/PTO email, I have had worked taken away, I have had horrible work given.

This is an absolute nightmare. Please heed these words "go into something else." Please, do not try to think you will be the magic one. It would only last a short period of time anyway.

I have been in this business 40 years and totally agree with your thoughts. However, this is what I do best, and I am only 3 years from retirement, so would rather just stay on the same path. There is bound to be a decent place or two left somewhere that I am just not finding.

Patient First has the things that you are looking for. Straight typing, treat you like a professional, great benefits, M-F schedule, no set hours. Pay is well above what you mention.

be able to past their rigorous testing... then you have to go THERE for "training" which may be several weeks, before you are allowed to work from home. They constantly have openings posted on other boards, which means they are difficult to get into. You may have 40 years experience, but they want things done their way. I wish you luck!!

an email that there was a hiring freeze on MTs but as soon as it was up they would be in contact. Haven't heard a word but still seeing openings posted.

Would you be willing to work on site? I don't think much of anything is stable in MT now, but if I wanted to stay in the field I think working on site would be better in terms of stable pay and predictable hours. I am the same age as you and am working in a QC job on site until I am eligible to retire. I do see MT openings on site from time to time, our local hospital is advertising now, so you might consider making inquiries where you live. The only things I know about Patient First are what I have read here. It sounds as if the testing is difficult and it does involve some travel when you are training. Also, I think they use a lot of different shortcuts so there might be a bit of a learning curve. Good luck finding a good place, I understand not wanting to do anything different so close to retirement.
appreciate your insights - birdsong

I am working for a fairly local hospital now. It has some big plus's but some big downsides too. Maybe I will just have to stay put and hang in there. The last more local hospital I was with sent all their MTs to MM recently. Having worked for MQ and Transcend/Nuance before, did not want to go that route. thanks.

Going To The Dark Side
Jul 17, 2014

I now work full time for an MTSO that does Nuance overflow and am relatively happy there.  The problem is I need to work part time for several important reasons which I won't go into.  Well to do so, I would have to accept a lower line rate (told thems the rules) and have to work fewer hours than I really need to (again told thems the rules).  I was thinking I might just do better working directly for Nuance with probably a better line rate and ability to work the number ...

Hi Coderville! I Am MT/QA Looking To Ditch The Dark Side...
Nov 20, 2013

Due to being paid less than 50% what I feel my experience and brain power are worth after 10 years, I have recently had recurring thoughts of taking a coding course, retraining in general. My employer's financial stability is questionable, and they obviously don't value me. They just gave us new job titles "senior analyst" but cut PTO by 20 hours in the same e-mail lol. I would like to hear the thoughts of others who have left MT to do coding/billing? How is the biz? Same @# differe ...

Swine Flu Shot?
Apr 14, 2010

Has anyone gotten the swine flu shot, as in those working in hospitals or in home.  They say it is on the rise again and I am debating on whether to get it.  I work at home, so no risk from hospitals, but I do have kids in school to bring it home to me.  They say the 30-somethings (me) get a VERY bad case of it and the kids are usually fine?  So much info and so many decisions, makes you want to wear a mask on a day to day basis. ...

$170.00 FOR A TETANUS SHOT!!!????
Apr 18, 2013

Went to the doctor's office this morning to get my tetanus shot updated because I fell the other day and cut myself and Dr. said my last tetanus shot was 10 years ago.  When I told them I did not have any insurance that it would cost me $170.00 because they were required to charge an "administrative fee" (hospital-owned practice).  I just about swallowed my tongue!  Fortunately the lady checking me in suggested I go to the Health Department and I could get it m ...

Hard Drive Shot...now What?
Jun 21, 2010

OK, here's the scoop. I am working on an older company-provided Dell running XP that's basically on the very last of its legs (got the blue screen of death this morning but was able to finally get to Windows and into my program). I talked with our IT guy today, and he said to get a new hard drive and have the old info transferred (at my expense, because of new company rules). I work on ChartScript.net and asked if that ran on Vista because I could then use my laptop, our only other com ...

Well Another Pay Period Shot To Heckari... Sm
Sep 01, 2010

As the old adage goes.   The harder I work the behinder I get....   Can't win.  I was working with a good pay period and then same ol same ol,  NJA.   And to top it off, I cannot ever get into QCare, it stays on a proverbial lock at the loading screen.   So just shoot me.....    At this point, I don't care anymore....   ...

They Have Shot Themselves In The Foot With The New Name Search.

Too time consuming when searching for a doctor you don't know. Give me a break, Alt S for every attempt rather than just a march down the alphabet. I'm only willing to do it a couple times, whereas I would have probably found it with the old method. ...

May 24, 2014

Any companies that will let you give you work your own hours as long as you complete a set number of lines per given day?  I'd love to be an IC again with my own hours, since I have kids that need to be driven around all day.Either that or a night job.  I could use some company suggestions.  I've worked for several and not happy right now.  Thank you! ...

CO Hospital Employees Threatened W/ Firing If They Don't Get Flu Shot
Oct 06, 2012

This makes me REALLY glad I am getting the hell out of health care!   These draconian measures are being implemented across the country.  Most require that ALL employees -- even those who work off-site and have zero patient contact -- receive the toxic injection or they will lose their job.    Check out the comments.  I was VERY heartened to see that the vast majority of them are by posters opposed to the mandate (several very educated MDs and RNs po ...
