Schedule entitlement - sm

Posted: Feb 14, 2015

Okay, I hate MM just as much as anybody here.  The company sucks.  However, what the heck is with all this whining about schedule changes and not being able to work the schedule you want.  I have worked at least a dozen jobs in my life, cook, baker, park attendant, janitor, waitress, cake decorator, manager, in-house MT, etc.  The only one that I can think of where I actually chose my schedule was the manager, and even then it was pretty restricted.  All the other jobs, a schedule was handed to me.  If there was a time that I absolutely could not work, I worked it out with my manager...the exact same thing I can do here.  If I did something like that too much, however, I probably wouldn't be working there for very long.  Some jobs, I didn't even get that privelege, just a "deal with it" response.  As an MT at a hospital, I had a schedule given to me, I had to work some weekends and certainly holidays.  My sister, a nurse, doesn't get to choose her schedule.  If they want her to do swing shifts, she has to do swing shifts.

This is not a bank or a cushy government job.  We are medical professionals.  People don't say, "I'm dying, but it's the weekend, so I guess I have to wait until Monday."  There are coverage gaps that need to be filled.  Certainly, there are better ways to go about it, and some of our TSMs can be evil and force it...just like any manager at any other job.   That's just the personality of the TSM.  I have been lucky.  My TSM asks for volunteers first, those who can or are willing to change.  If no volunteers, she will go around asking.  If still no one steps to the plate, she will have to choose.  Do you expect her to just give up when nobody wants to?  Like spoiling a child?

When I worked in-house, about once every couple weeks, I would get a phone call in the middle of the night to come in and type a report because a patient was being emergently transfered.  It was me, because I was the one who lived closest to the hospital.  I could have refused, and they would have called the next person; however, somebody would eventually have to do it, whether they wanted to or not.

We are adults here and have responsibilities.  I have not had a full weekend off in 8 years.  I actually have not had a holiday off unless it falls on my regular scheduled day off.  I also work evening/night shift.  No, I do not like this shift and would rather work while my kid is at school and husband at work.

This job is not what it used to be.  Many have been spoiled with getting what they want.  That is no longer the case.  I don't expect anything more from this job than I do with any other that I have worked, because, really, why should I?

You are right to a point. I have been an MT since the early 90s. Back then, I worked for a small MTSO. We worked during the day, had weekends and the important holidays off. Then the giants took over and the competitiveness began. It used to be a 24-hour turnaround time. Now, I think it's what, an hour--? That's part of the bitterness for some, I think. Another is the threats. Some of us have changed our schedule around more than once, and they still seem to be unhappy. I work afternoon/evenings and 1 weekend day. If they ask me to change my schedule again, I'm gone. But yes, that's the nature of this business now, mostly due to the corporate machine.

to a point you are right - Martina

I've worked fast food, CNA, retail, CSR, etc. I have worked at least part of a weekend most of my life and some holidays.........not a problem for me. BUT for the most part, most of these jobs, they tried to rotate, weekends, holidays, etc. based on seniority.

Okay here's the problem with MTSOs, we are taken for granted in every way, shape, form and fashion! There is no genuine thankfulness at any time during your, "employment". No one expects to be told all the time that they are doing a great job, but there has to be a balance to keep employee morale up.

With MTSOs, there is nothing, no thankfulness; just lies, deceit, sadism, just down right cruelty, no RAISES, for the most part, no bonus, no cards of appreciation, NOTHING!
So what person would be willing to bend over backwards to help them after years and years of cruelty?!

In nursing homes that I worked in, we would always be short on certain shifts, and I will tell you what the director of nursing did not have to beg or threaten us to pick up extra shifts! Before, she could lay the sign up sheet down at the nursing stations for even an hour, the sheet was filled, no shortages for the most part. WHY? Because she at least met us halfway! There was some genuine appreciation shown along the way, in cost of living raises, merit raises, a turkey during Thanksgiving or a gift card, meetings where we were actually listened to and suggestions were taken into consideration!

WE GET NONE OF THAT WITH THE MTSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So yes, who wants to compromise, compromise, compromise, compromise with never anything to show for it, except more abuse, more demands, more threats!

If they works for you, then more power to you!

wage, "high school" jobs, possibly with the exception of your manager job (depending on the business). Yes, those types of jobs most always have varying schedules. A "professional" job typically has a set schedule. When I worked as a remote MT for a hospital, I most definitely had a set schedule with rotating holidays and having to fill in on weekends when the weekend MT needed off. I certainly will not work a schedule that does not fit into the rest of my life, and I would not tolerate my schedule constantly changing. That is not entitlement, in my opinion. If you're okay being treated as a nonprofessional, juggling the rest of your life to work a low-paying MT job, good for you. I totally understand the griping about schedules.

Schedule entitlement - Entitled to what????

[ In Reply To ..]
I resent that they tell you one thing and then change it before your very eyes. If you are going to change my schedule, then tell me up front, same with weekends and holidays and how hard it is to get them off and then no work. Also, NJA, do they tell you about that or the CP's that are too numerous to count or the picky QA, heck no! So I don't think it is entitlement in any way; it is called the truth. When I worked in restaurants and retail it was told me what to expect with a schedule, not an empty promise and I was just fine with that. Again, this place is the pits!

How can I accept a job if I don't know the hours? I don't mind working a couple holidays or weekend hours, but a company should at least tell you your hours BEFORE you sign a contract.

I guess some of us are so "spoiled", we actually - want to make a living with this job!

[ In Reply To ..]
Hmmphfff! Such gall! We should "work harder, faster, and be happy just to have a job."

Yeah, I've heard all that BS before.

want to make a living - phatty

[ In Reply To ..]
Exactly. Most of do actually want to "make a living" at whatever work we do. Some do it out of deep desire to help others, such as teachers, but this is the only job where we make less now than say even 5 years ago. What is up with having 7 different accounts and then always changing those accounts? How can you keep a line count up with all the specifics for every last one of these accounts. It has become just awful, and the dictation quality has not gotten any better. Something has got to give.

Please don't say I'm spoiled or entitled, because I'm far from it. I've worked very hard all the years I've worked for Medquist/MModal, always working overtime when requested just to help out and doing my best to keep them in turnaround. I'm very offended that you would act like I'm not responsible for complaining about my schedule. I work 6 days a week and have to fight to have a holiday off so, again, let me complain about this company, because they definitely do not appreciate their loyal employees.

and worked in-house at a hospital. I was employed for over 19 years. I worked by tail off, sometimes literally needing 2 other people to help, which I did not get. In the 19 plus years I worked at the hospital not once did they change my hours. That's a total life changer. I was hired day shift, and I remained day shift. If they offered it I helped with overtime many times. I can just image what a total change in shifts would do to someone with dependent children, etc. You might want to apply for a management position at the company. Sounds like you would fit right in with their cracking the whip and expecting the employess to turn their insides out while getting next to nothing back.

So sorry SK. I responded to the wrong post. - SM

QA Schedule?
Aug 30, 2010

Hi all ~ I am curious how frequently QA is performed at your hospital.  We had been on a 2-reports-reviewed-quarterly schedule, but it seems QA is being pushed further and further onto the back burner because we've been so busy.  My boss would like for me to get a feel for what others are doing out there.  I've worked at some hospitals that didn't do QA, ever, so I didn't have anything I could tell her.   ...
