Okay, I hate MM just as much as anybody here. The company sucks. However, what the heck is with all this whining about schedule changes and not being able to work the schedule you want. I have worked at least a dozen jobs in my life, cook, baker, park attendant, janitor, waitress, cake decorator, manager, in-house MT, etc. The only one that I can think of where I actually chose my schedule was the manager, and even then it was pretty restricted. All the other jobs, a schedule was handed to me. If there was a time that I absolutely could not work, I worked it out with my manager...the exact same thing I can do here. If I did something like that too much, however, I probably wouldn't be working there for very long. Some jobs, I didn't even get that privelege, just a "deal with it" response. As an MT at a hospital, I had a schedule given to me, I had to work some weekends and certainly holidays. My sister, a nurse, doesn't get to choose her schedule. If they want her to do swing shifts, she has to do swing shifts.
This is not a bank or a cushy government job. We are medical professionals. People don't say, "I'm dying, but it's the weekend, so I guess I have to wait until Monday." There are coverage gaps that need to be filled. Certainly, there are better ways to go about it, and some of our TSMs can be evil and force it...just like any manager at any other job. That's just the personality of the TSM. I have been lucky. My TSM asks for volunteers first, those who can or are willing to change. If no volunteers, she will go around asking. If still no one steps to the plate, she will have to choose. Do you expect her to just give up when nobody wants to? Like spoiling a child?
When I worked in-house, about once every couple weeks, I would get a phone call in the middle of the night to come in and type a report because a patient was being emergently transfered. It was me, because I was the one who lived closest to the hospital. I could have refused, and they would have called the next person; however, somebody would eventually have to do it, whether they wanted to or not.
We are adults here and have responsibilities. I have not had a full weekend off in 8 years. I actually have not had a holiday off unless it falls on my regular scheduled day off. I also work evening/night shift. No, I do not like this shift and would rather work while my kid is at school and husband at work.
This job is not what it used to be. Many have been spoiled with getting what they want. That is no longer the case. I don't expect anything more from this job than I do with any other that I have worked, because, really, why should I?
