Everyone who is trade affected due to work being shifted to India with reduced hours is potentially eligible under this petition at http://doleta.gov/tradeact

I met with a representative today who encouraged me to tell other workers in this situation about the possible benefits from the department of labor. Contact your state office to find out if you qualify. It offers potential benefits for retraining in another occupation that has expected growth potential as well as possible TRA benefits which is a subsidy for TAA workers who are enrolled in a state approved retraining program. It takes a lot of paperwork and research but may be worth it. There is help available out there. It never hurts to check to see if you can make yourself more eligible for gainful employement. I honestly believe that all MT jobs will eventually become obsolute, due to either outsourcing or technology.

I saw your post last month and then it disappeared. Everyone ought to be reminded of this on a regular basis!

I called the state office, this is what they told me.

MModal will not lay us off.

TAA is available to all trade affected workers. You should contact the department of labor. You DO NOT have to be laid off. You can be unemployed or partially employed (reduction of hours due to international trade, see website). It is applicable in TX.

I would encourage everyone to appeal any decisions as there is already a petition in place that has been approved. Do not quit. It is an unbelievable program that was designed for just our sitations.

The state representative that I met with today encouraged me to pass this information along. It is completely your decision to follow through.

You get your hours reduced, you apply for unemployment and TAA, get approved, start school, and then MModal shifts work around and suddenly you have your full time hours again. Then how do you do your full time hours and still qualify or still attend school? Would you then have to quit school, or pay the schooling costs back?

quit complaining and do something positive for ourselves. Misery loves company but in order to make a change you have to actually work at making your sitation better. If the government is offering help and you really want to be employed then this is an excellent opportunity.

Some people were successful at getting info, others were told differently. I think state reps or others who tell you you have to be unemployed are just ignorant of this petition, which is ridiculous IMO. To the person who said their state rep said they had to be unemployed, did you give them the petition number?

Have to have a letter with impending date of lay off or have already been laid off.

Called One Stop, Called local UE office, called the State UE office, all gave same info. NOT ELIGIBLE.

Do they pay for us to go back to school and do they help provide an income, like UE, while doing so? I looked at the site, but it was a little confusing.

As many of you know, EMR companies charge fees upwards of 15,000 dollars to allow transcription companies to integrate with them. This barrier to entry will lead to us all being replaced by voice recognition or point and click unless we all do something. There is no reason transcriptionists can not co-exist with EMR's.
