Oranges and apples --- EHR and point-n-click and scribes - No Name

Posted: Nov 10, 2011

I think these ideas are getting used interchangeably when they are very different applications.  EHR is still transcribed documents, just not paper charts.  Facilities have already been on this for a good while now and the transcriptionist will basically see no difference as we don't usually handle a chart anyways in-house or virtually.  However, it is the point-n-click programs that are phasing out the transcribed document.

EHR/point/click - MT

Thanks for explaining this. This is what I thought, that EHR would not really be a threat as long as we were receiving the dictation to go in it, but the Mission One statement says that "EHR adoption is a large threat to medical transcription" so they must mean point and click and they must plan to do away with narrative, although it is hard to imagine a medical record without it.

A lot of facilities are already using it -- doctor's - offices, clinics, etc.

It is hurting a friend of mine already whose in-house department did clinic work to supplement loss of Radiology AND ER. Now the clinic is using point-and-click. She is off this whole week due to low workload. It isn't just us -- it is affecting everybody.

Apples And Oranges

Have a regular account been doing for years, all speech wreck.  Due to low volume, was farmed out to an account that is straight typing.  On an unfamiliar account and looking up old reports for nearly every doctor, I made over $50 more in 8 hours straight typing than I usually average on my regular familiar ASR account.  At least I am not crazy and I CAN still type.  ...

Point And Click EMR

Saw My First Point-and-click EMR Finished Product.
Jan 06, 2013

I had to request a medical report for myself and oh dear lord what a mess that point-and-click stuff is. They check all items in a ROS and the thing throws it all together in giant run-on sentences, separating everything by a comma, and leaving weird spaces everywhere. There's no consistency anywhere in how it makes things look, i.e. in a numbered list that has 1., 2., etc., putting one space after the period after the number and the next one putting 2 spaces, then back to 1 space, then may ...

My Take Is That Some Bad Apples Have Probably Spoiled It For All..sm
Mar 03, 2010

I sincerely think that the majority of us work our schedules, take pride in our work, produce quality documents and have relatively low QA submission rates.  However, I also think that there are a significant number who do not comply with some or all of the above, and they have caused this joke of a company to punish all of us.  Just take one look at the reports on the Repository to prove my point.      I wish to all heck that I was young enough to start a whole new c ...

Looking For One Of Those Clickety-click Keyboards (sm)
Jun 09, 2010

I really like the old style keyboards with the metal contacts and springs, rather than the soft touch keyboards with silicon contacts and rubber (but with a USB plug). Right-click On Red Underlined Word
Sep 12, 2010

Why is our new dictationary so useless?  It shows us a mis-spelled word, so I went ahead and right-clicked on it, and it gave me no options.  I mis-spelled finesteride and the correct spelling should have been finasteride.  One letter difference and our brilliant Qictionary can't find the correct option???  Had to go to Google to find it, but means extra keystrokes.  Why bother to highlight a mis-spelled word? ...

Double Click Does 2 Different Functions At Once!
Nov 30, 2012

In ASR, it will highlight the word you double click and also it will put the audio back to that point. In straight transcription, it will highlight the word and take the audio all the way back to the beginning. And they won't fix it! - because I am never to take my hands off the keyboard???!! I find mousing quicker to follow ASR. I've tried cursor tracking, but it rarely ends up exactly where I want and I either end up having to use the keyboard or mouse (depending upon ...

The New MT -- Medical Scribes?
Oct 09, 2011

Does anyone have good input on whether medical scribes are the new medical transcriptionists only being filled my medical students, medical assistants or a part-time or piecemeal clerk at a lower rate (hourly or by piece) than medical transcriptionists -- if lower pay is even possible? Also, what are any inputs on RHIT and the medical coding future? I already have a bachelor's degree but thought about another associate degree in RHIT in a CAHIIM accredited program. From your viewpoint, wou ...

Information About Scribes?
Nov 09, 2011

Can anybody give me information about scribes?  I just applied for a job that is for a medical transcriptionist/medical assistant which requires the transcriptionist to scribe for the doctor.  I'm concluding that you are in with the doctor and patient and basically just typing what he is saying during the appt rather than doc trying to treat the patient and document information at the same time.  Do these types of positions usually get paid higher than a transcriptionist?  Thanks for an ...

Remote Scribes
Jun 24, 2013

We all know the frustration in dictation where they don't use a pause button, how our salaries dwindle to nothing as a result.  I noted an ad on the Job Seeker's Board to train to become a "remote scribe" for .07 to .08 CPL.  Doesn't it seem this would also dwindle to nothing as it seems there would be far more waiting for data to enter and would take forever to complete a line if you are working in real time.  Anyone have any info on how this would work? ...

MTs Will Make The Best Scribes
Sep 05, 2013

There is a budding new profession, for which MTs will be perfect.  It's explained in an article at http://smartype.com/id12.html.  Both the demand and the pay for transcription are dropping precipitously.  It's a good time to consider a career transition.  The tough part will be finding physicians who recognize that their lives will be immensely better if they have YOU doing all their EHR documentation...and that it's easily worth $40K per year. ...

Virtual Scribes

PAY FOR VIRTUAL SCRIBES
Jun 12, 2015

My question is this...if you were working as a virtual scribe (via hipaa compliant video) from home what would you expect the pay per patient to be? Not hourly, just per patient that you documented and turned in to your supervisor at end of day...keep in mind you'd probably be on video about 4 hours a day. I'm really interested to see the responses to this question. ...

Scribes - Starting Salary
Mar 30, 2010

I do medical transcription for a local specialty practice.  They are transitioning to EHR and gave notice to their MTs that they would be cutting back on their MT needs starting next week.  Today, the office mgr. called and asked if I would be interested in a Scribe position.  In short, I am.  The manager would like to learn my salary requirements.  I am thinking of asking to start at $10/hour.  Does that seem reasonable.  N.B.
