The new MT -- medical scribes? - Anne

Posted: Oct 09, 2011

Does anyone have good input on whether medical scribes are the new medical transcriptionists only being filled my medical students, medical assistants or a part-time or piecemeal clerk at a lower rate (hourly or by piece) than medical transcriptionists -- if lower pay is even possible?

Also, what are any inputs on RHIT and the medical coding future? I already have a bachelor's degree but thought about another associate degree in RHIT in a CAHIIM accredited program. From your viewpoint, would this be a waste of time? What is the trend for RHIT and medical coding? Would it be better to spend the money and get a master's degree in business.

All input welcomed. I am not in MT management at all; just wanting some input from various individuals from hospital-based, service and IC MTs.

Thanks!

Have to be a medical assistant or RN. They do all the duties of the medical assistant, plus enter the electronic data. I am thinking of going back to school to be a medical assistant and getting a job as a scribe.

yeah....for $9.00 an hour! Good luck! - anon

No, anon, you missed the message. This is new--not - HS grads on their first grown-up job. NM

I saw a job ad today for a medical scribe/assistant... - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
on a different site where it stated a scribe was needed to follow a physician around and enter data into the computer, as well as doing medical assistant duties. The pay was $9.00 an hour! Medical assistant's are well trained and if certified, should expect better pay than that. Unfortonately, some doctors see them only as doing vitals and nothing more, and entering data into a computer is menial work, to them. That pay is an insult, but that is what I saw. and it was not for HS grads on their first job, as you imply.
I agree with anon. I'm in the higher-paying - alan

New York City area and the highest wage I've seen for CMA/scribe is $12.00, and they want experience. The same thing is happening with pharmacy tech jobs, which seem to be "hot" around here. Expensive vo-tech training for a less-than-$30k job.

Medical Scribes -- The Future for MTs? - Joe

There is an interesting article about Medical Coordinators (MCs), which are enhanced scribes, at http://www.ehroutlook.com/trends/"Medical-coordinator%22-takes-strain-out-of-doctor-EHR-use_171.html. This is a position perfect for MTs. After reading the brief article, you should also check out the comments below it. We are finding that physicians are willing to pay $15-20 per hour plus benefits for an MT who has been trained to be an expert MC, performing real-time EHR documentation from a remote location. And the physicians are paying for the training, which lasts 2-3 weeks.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...office workers - have NO BUSINESS in

the examining room with disrobed patients getting probed. Nurses and/or nursing students, PAs, MED students, MED interns & residents - you get the drift - but not the general office workers, it is a violation.

Remote, Real-Time EHR Documentation - Joe

I fully agree with your concern. That's why our Medical Coordinators operate from a remote location, which will typically be their home. That also enables them to have a sophisticated workstation, while listening into the encounter, thereby facilitating all the workflow coordination they accomplish. You can see this in action, and hear from an experienced MT who became an MC, at http://www.valadoc.com/id1.html.
no thanks, joe. bulk of unemployment due to technology. - not just transcription either. sell it elsewhere.

I think you need to be careful using the term Medical Coordinator for this position you have created. That title is already used in different medical systems and it is not for the job you are describing.

The medical scribes at the last hospital I worked for (long long ago) were actually PA's who went along with the doctor on rounds. Now here is my opinion on coding. If they can make a computer that will recognize the voice, then soon they will make one that will automatically place the code in next to the diagnosis/name of procedure. I have a friend who used to be a recruiter for transcriptionists, now she is a recruiter for coders, and she advised me not to do it because just like the transcription companies want experienced people (no newbies please, no new grads), the coding places want the same. they don't care that you spent time and money on a course, they want experience. just my 2 cents.

Information About Scribes?
Nov 09, 2011

Can anybody give me information about scribes?  I just applied for a job that is for a medical transcriptionist/medical assistant which requires the transcriptionist to scribe for the doctor.  I'm concluding that you are in with the doctor and patient and basically just typing what he is saying during the appt rather than doc trying to treat the patient and document information at the same time.  Do these types of positions usually get paid higher than a transcriptionist?  Thanks for an ...

Remote Scribes
Jun 24, 2013

We all know the frustration in dictation where they don't use a pause button, how our salaries dwindle to nothing as a result.  I noted an ad on the Job Seeker's Board to train to become a "remote scribe" for .07 to .08 CPL.  Doesn't it seem this would also dwindle to nothing as it seems there would be far more waiting for data to enter and would take forever to complete a line if you are working in real time.  Anyone have any info on how this would work? ...

MTs Will Make The Best Scribes
Sep 05, 2013

There is a budding new profession, for which MTs will be perfect.  It's explained in an article at http://smartype.com/id12.html.  Both the demand and the pay for transcription are dropping precipitously.  It's a good time to consider a career transition.  The tough part will be finding physicians who recognize that their lives will be immensely better if they have YOU doing all their EHR documentation...and that it's easily worth $40K per year. ...

PAY FOR VIRTUAL SCRIBES
Jun 12, 2015

My question is this...if you were working as a virtual scribe (via hipaa compliant video) from home what would you expect the pay per patient to be? I'm really interested to see the responses to this question. ...

Scribes - Starting Salary
Mar 30, 2010

I do medical transcription for a local specialty practice.  They are transitioning to EHR and gave notice to their MTs that they would be cutting back on their MT needs starting next week.  Today, the office mgr. called and asked if I would be interested in a Scribe position.  In short, I am.  The manager would like to learn my salary requirements.  I am thinking of asking to start at $10/hour.  Does that seem reasonable.  N.B. Idaho ranks 49/50 in per capita i ...

Oranges And Apples --- EHR And Point-n-click And Scribes
Nov 10, 2011

I think these ideas are getting used interchangeably when they are very different applications.  EHR is still transcribed documents, just not paper charts.  Facilities have already been on this for a good while now and the transcriptionist will basically see no difference as we don't usually handle a chart anyways in-house or virtually.  However, it is the point-n-click programs that are phasing out the transcribed document.  ...
