Might be Working for M*Modal Soon--Questions - MaryFromMaine

Posted: Feb 24, 2012

Hi All!

I have a phone interview with M*Modal next week (to work as an MT, not an editor) and have a list of questions for them, but thought I might direct some of those questions to you all before then. Knowledge is power, I think, and I’d like to know as much as possible before I decide to sign with them, if asked. I have worked as an MT since 1984, and worked from home as a subcontractor since 1998. Never worked from home as an employee.

How do they define “full-time” work? By hours worked or by line count met?

Do MTs have a way of checking the line count throughout the day to see how they are doing?

Is there a way to verify the line count independently of the M*Modal platform?

I guess that enough questions for now. Would appreciate any and all input. Thanks!

Mary

How Are You Going Do Just MT w/o Editing? - MModal is a Speech Wreck Co Bought by MQ

[ In Reply To ..]
FYI: MQ (I still call it that) barely has any straight transcribing anyway--not for years, that I can tell. They're handing you a line. Maybe they'll give you some straight typing to make you feel good at first, but be warned...

Don't plan on just transcribing no matter what - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
they tell you. Majority of work is editing and not transcribing. I get maybe 1 or 2 jobs of transcribing a day and the rest are editing jobs. Good luck.

I would never tell anyone not to take a job - but absolutely, positively

[ In Reply To ..]
don't believe anything they tell you and be prepared for the worst. I am with them from one of the buy outs and was told by the smiling faces that nothing would change. Then today I log on to start my work week and have had 5 different accounts so far, of course all with vastly different specs to try to comprehend, and by the way, all VR.
There are many many many - days that go by
[ In Reply To ..]
where I have ZERO straight typing jobs. The most straight typing jobs I EVER get is less than 5. I'm a tier 3, also been doing this since 1984. I don't know any accounts that are straight typing. Good luck!
Those of Us Who Have Worked There Know - Those who have not will find out soon enough

Oh, Sorry... - Thought you Had Expected to Only Transcribe

[ In Reply To ..]
So, you will seriously be editing. They want 150 lph, or to it average out to be. I'm still working on that.

39 hrs constitutes a full-timer week. 24 hrs constitutes part time week.

So you know, you're working for MedQuist, period, but I think you get that.

They lie like crazy... don't believe a thing they say. - Laughing, to keep from crying

[ In Reply To ..]
My company was bought out by them, and during the transition process they swore we would keep our own accounts, the transition would be great, etc. Literally the first day after the deadline when we had to accept/decline their offer, when we were all officially owned by them, they completely changed. We hardly get any work on our old accounts because I assume they are sharing it with all of MQ employees now, and we promptly got bombarded by account specs for like 20 new accounts that we are supposed to learn.

They lie, lie, lie, and then lie some more.

The only thing that gets me through a work day anymore is hoping that someday, the owners/management of this company are going to burn in hell for being lying pieces of crap that are singlehandedly ruining the MT industry.

:)

Totally agree - happytobegone

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree with most that was said, especially that last comment, they totally lie about everything and good luck with having any support from your ccm (company created monster) mine was the worst, i'd send an email and never get any reply, guess I wasn't important. I am so happy I was able to leave.

It's true - Woreout

[ In Reply To ..]
Everything that has been said is true. Please believe it. To answer your question about keeping up with your line count, yes, you are able to keep up with it, but using their system, not an independent system. You also need to know they were sued a few years ago for hiding line count from their MTs. You should also know we took a survey for the company a few months ago, and it obviously didn't turn out well for them, because CEO addressed it, and said they'd try to be more outfront about things and try to do things differently as far as incentive (don't get me started on what they're planning to do about "incentive"). Also, did they let you know that straight typing and VR are paid differently, and if you send more than 5% of your work to QA, you're paid even less? Good luck with your decision.

Is there not a binding contract you all signed - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If they do not keep their word on the contract you all signed I would think there would be a lot of lawsuits headed their way???

I never saw any contract... - when they bought my other

[ In Reply To ..]
company it was take a couple days to decide then either take it or leave it. The offer only specifies a line rate for VR and straight, not how much of either you are likely to get.
AHHHH - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I see. That is why a lot of people are treated unfairly at MQ/MMODDDDDDDAL -- no contract. The outsourcing company that took over my hospital gave us all a contract and stated in this contract was our negotiated line count, VR line count, and that we would be holding our current hospital, clinical account plus probably given other accounts. I thought every big MTSO company did business this way. I was mistaken. Sorry. It is a shame.
Yeah, no contracts from the Q/MModal - why bother
[ In Reply To ..]
They really don't care if the employee stays or not. They probably feel that if an employee requests a contract, they might as well say they don't want the job. They have hundreds if not thousands of Indians lined up to take their job anyway.

I had 34 lines of straight typing ALL day. - Good luck. I would keep looking myself.

Get it in writing, with no small print. - Adios

[ In Reply To ..]
I came back after being gone a year, due to a move, and I was told I could expect 80% MT, 20% edit, roughly. Well it's 99.5% Edit. I was told there was no guarantee. That is their attitude about everything. Q: Why is ASR not improving. A: It will soon (it's been over 5 years, no immprovement). Q: Why is pay so low with all my experience. A: You should try some of our handy hints for improving productivity. Q: WHy does ASR spit out tachycardiac instead of tachycardic? A: Lucky it does so we have jobs (rough translation of what I was told).

Also don't count on a sign-on bonus if they offer one. Read the fine print, better yet take it to an attorney. You have to be producing out of the gate, day one, to earn a sign-on bonus. No time to learn the account or the system.

The only positive is paychecks are on time. Even insurance sucks.

they can worm around the small print apparently - North MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I kept the paperwork from when I signed on over 10 years ago and I actually had corporate people calling me "fishing" to see what it said. They were trying to get me to admit that it said a 65 character line without spaces, but oh no it said 65 character line WITH spaces and I had the contract signed by corporate at the time. So the next thing I know they were cutting tier rates instead and cutting 401K match and cutting bonuses. They were bound and determined to cut pay and found a way around the small print. If they wait long enough none of the old employees will be left to hold them accountable.

Count on 100% ASR that way when you get a typing job or a few in a shift you feel like you hit the lottery. At 4 cpl at the 150 lph minimum you will make $6 an hour. However, MQ will kick in the rest to make it whatever your state minimum wage is. Free money! Just kidding but you will be written up if you only make minimum wage, even if produce over the minimum. Run, run, run away.

run, run...... - MT Gone

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't walk, run far and fast from this company if you need to support yourself. Full time is considered 39 hours, there is (was) a way to check your line count (at least at the time of my leaving.) They lie, tell the employees to implement new skills to earn more, then when you do, you get a pay cut. Unless you are totally desperate don't go here. The will probably tell you the folks on this board are whiners. When Spheris was sold out to the Q (now M*Model) I came on here to check it out. I figured these folk were slackers.. then all the stuff started happening to me and my co-workers I had known for years! So best advice run, don't walk away from this M*Model, MedQuist or whatever they are calling themselves this month!!!

dont say you weren't warned - depends on CCM and accounts

[ In Reply To ..]
Your experience here will totally depend on your CCM/QA and your accounts. Not all CCMs are fabulous and easily accessible and some are just downright vindictive and never answer an email. You will end up in a group of accounts, you may have what they consider a primary account but most likely just a group of 10 or more accounts and you get whatever report is due next. But give it a few months then they will shuffle accounts and you will get new ones to learn.

Many employees come back to this board after dismissing the negative comments as disgruntled employees or bringing the situation upon themselves somehow by not asking for more work or asking for new accounts and admit that the claims were true.

Does Anyone Like Working For M-Modal?
Jul 07, 2013

From what I'm reading on M-Modal's board, it sounds simply dreadful working for them.  Still, they stay in business are in direct competition with Nuance (which has an equally dreadful board).  How can they stay at the top of the MTSO industry if they're so horrible to work for?  I'm not meaning to doubt you guys who write about how miserable it is.  I'm just wondering if the people who LIKE it there just don't post on MT Stars, or if there reall ...

M*Modal Enter Key Not Working
Feb 23, 2012

Suddenly today when editing in M*Modal I can hit enter to get text to go to the next line, but it does not skip a line like it should for a new paragraph, and if I hit enter again at the beginning of that line it will not put in another line. It's not my enter key because it works fine in word and here.....:-) So it's within the program and I have searched and searched to try to find out what I did. I must have disabled that somehow but I have no idea and I need it back! I can ...

Any Canadian MTs Out There Working For M*Modal?
May 18, 2012

I am just looking for anyone from Canada who is working for this company.  That is one of the things I don't like about M*Modal.  You are an island working for the mainland.  But there is no contact with any of the other islands.  Also you can't actually see the mainland.  You can only send mail to them. Sigh...I just want someone to talk to that works for this company so that we can give each other support etc.  I am not sure why the company doesn't ...

Thoughts On Working For M Modal Part-time?
Feb 09, 2013

It is depressing reading about the poor treatment by some companies. I am looking for some part-time transcribing or VR editing after losing OT and no raise but health care, grocery, gas costs still rising. How are they to work for? Do you run out of work? Is the pay so low you feel like you are sewing soccer balls in India? I worked for a local service years ago, the pay was great, the owner great and tons of work. From what I am reading 8 cpl for transcribing and 4 cpl for VR editing is n ...

Did You Previously Have Humana Health Insurance, Before Working For M*Modal?
Jul 26, 2012

Sorry to be repetitive.  I posted this on the Main Board but haven't gotten any responses there, so I'm re-posting it here where more M*Modal folks might notice it(?).   I got a letter a couple days ago from Humana about a rebate for a portion of the health insurance premiums which I had at my last job--the rebate apparently required  by the Affordable Care Act.  The letter has a lot of additional mumbo-jumbo, not all of which I understand.   It says to "cont ...

Is Nuance And M-Modal Joint Services? Posting Here For Nuance AC, Got Email To Test For M-Modal.
May 01, 2012

I thought they were 2 different services.  Everyone is buying out everyone, so who knows.  All the small companies have been merged I guess.  I thought Nuance was out of New York and were the primary with VR.  Maybe one has to keep up with the changes and be a member and pay the dues and go to the meetings with AAMT and be a CMT to keep up with the changes, even though you still get 4 cents. ...

M*Modal VR
Sep 25, 2010

I have another question.  When one does a draft in VR, does MT get paid for all lines in the draft or would an MT get paid if it has to be edited.  I will be trying to learn this in the next few weeks and I am scared to death I will not catch on and then I might be without a job.   I have a feeling I might not get paid for the whole draft report.  Then again it may depend on the company.  Any opinions please.   Thanks  ...

M-Modal Feedback
Dec 16, 2009

Would appreciate feedback from anyone using M-Modal, especially Webmedx Enterprise MTs. Dreading the conversion and wondering if my fears are well founded. I'm pretty fast straight typing but rarely get more than 50 lines more an hour with current VR. Seems all it takes is just one lousy report to negate the lines made on the decent reports. Afraid it's just going to be worse with M-Modal and the whole drop-down heading thing. Anyone have any encouragement to offer? ...
