Can someone please tell me about M*Modal, please? - MT2

I am thinking about testing for acute care transcription with M*Modal. But, when I went to their web site I see they are owned by someone in India? Is that for real? Also, I see posts here in this chat room "no work, no work, no work, paycheck sucks," etc. Can anyone fill me in on M*Modal, please. Also, do they supply you with the equipment? I do not want to work for a company owned by someone in India, that's for sure! Thank you in advance for your help! MT2

With the regards to the "no work" that seems to be the norm for most all companies this time of year. Even when I worked in the hospital we had our slow periods. Usually around the holiday seasons this happens; however, right now it seems to be worse than usual on a lot of regions.

Pay check sucks - Well that varies from person to person. Some people make 4 cents per line for editing voice recognition, some make 5 and some make 6 cents per line. Of course straight typing rates are higher and range anywhere from 8 cents a line to 10 cents a line depending on tier level and years experience.

Factors that effect your pay - Low work volumes/no work, cents per line rate, speed, experience and the ability to sit still and stay focused, meaning work when you are punched in and not surf the net, clean your house, talk on the phone etc.

Do they supply equipment - I dont know. They supplied me with equipment and a computer. I do believe they send you headsets and foot pedals regardless though.

I saw somewhere that MModal bought the MedQuist company. I wonder if MModal only pays like 4 cpl? I have been unsuccessful so far with finding info on where they are physically located and I can't find a phone number, so I sent them a message through their "contact" section. If anyone can tell me how to speak with them directly, I'd greatly appreciate it!

If you are tier 3 where you type everything are you still running out of work?

Also, does the shift matter?

I work at Nuance and there is never any work in the early to mid morning but by afternoon there is usually plenty.

Thinking of leaving Nuance for M-Modal but that is probably just jumping from one fire pit to another.
I am a tier 3, do everything, bounce between 30+ accounts - and still ran out today.

Oh, there's a big "thing" on who's worse to work for. I don't recommend a move like that. If you move, go someplace smaller, then toss a coin as to whether Nuance or MM will buy it up.

There are days when all I have are surgeries, so I'm guessing the other acute care stuff dries up. Or, they don't have a lot of surgery transcriptionists. Not sure.

Op notes are wonderful and there were a LOT of us that wanted them. Consider yourself lucky. I got put on clinic detail and there is no way to make much of a living doing that.

Can you believe how stupid I have been? I have been working for 10 cpl for straight typing and 0.060 cpl for editing. Do you see why I am shaking right now? How can they do this?

MModal IS MedQuist. They changed their name in an attempt to escape their bad reputation - see message

Their partnering with JP Morgan is just another similar attempt.

They pay some MTs 6 cpl for ASR, some only 4. Why? Depends on how long that MT has been with MModal and depends on how much the clients are willing to pay. DOES NOT DEPEND ON THE MT'S EXPERIENCE, SKILL LEVEL, QUALITY, EDUCATION, ETC.

MModal/MedQuist does not offer shift differential on ASR rate. They do offer it on straight typing rate, but about 98% of your work will be ASR, so basically no shift diff.

QA/QC is absurdly inconsistent, and apparently some QA/QC is being done by Indian MTs.

You'll be promised about 3 accounts, but you'll constantly run out of work, so if you want to work, you'll have to keep adding accounts, which means more client specs to review before each and every single document, which takes time, which is UNPAID, which means lower wages, but still harder work. There are tons of MTs working for MModal now who have 60+ accounts, rarely getting the same dictator twice, so no “repetition” speed boost, so lower wages and more stress.

There are happy MTs with MModal, but they're the ones who are on the "good" accounts (meaning, ASR does it’s job), they have the same regular accounts which always have work, and/or they’re getting the 6 cpl line rate.

I don’t know about their insurance because I couldn’t afford to purchase it.

They do provide equipment (at least they did as of about a year ago): monitor, computer, keyboard, mouse, headphones, pedal. They also provide tech support... from Indian techs.

They most certainly send a huge amount of work to India. That’s partly why so many MTs are running out of work. Also, every time MModal “acquires” small MTSOs and hospital MT departments, they “grandfather” in those MTs. This is like having 1 loaf of bread that has to feed 4 people for a week. Now, that same loaf of bread, plus 4 more slices, has to feed 8 people for a week.

I was stuck with an “absentee” CCM (another name for MT supervisor, but CCMs aren’t MTs), who only made an appearance when she wanted something. Not all MTs have bad CCMs, but just beware, it’s a crapshoot.

If ASR is doing it’s job, there shouldn’t be more than 20% editing/formatting per report. However, the ASR that way too many MTs are getting requires about 90% editing/formatting; and while that would be faster to just straight type it – which most MTs do resort to doing – it’s still at 4 cpl.

Also, the F11 function that changes a report from ASR to straight typing, thus changing the line rate from 4 cpl to 8-9 cpl, is highly monitored and some MTs get in trouble for using this function, even if it’s warranted. Some MTs claim to use this function all the time without any repercussions, while others are getting written up for using it just a few times.

Oh Girl! you hit the nail on the head with your very informative email! This should be CRIMINAL! No company in the United States is allowed to pay a person less than minimum wage! I am not mentioning names but I worked for a company - US based who was constantly changing my work type - and I am a seasoned MT in the business for 18 yrs. Where is the Board of Labor? This should be a CRIME!

I was acquired my MedQuist (now M*Modal) in the early winter of 2010. After the first paycut I went to part time to take more hours from another employer...then they cut my pay again, my account of 10 years "vanished" one Monday morning, and a couple days later I left to accept a full time position with another employer who I'd been working for....'nuff said?

I started with JLG who was bought out by Medquist and then they changed their name to M*Modal as Medquist had so much bad publicity. I left them in June thinking I had a better job lined up doing VRE at 4 cents/line. They say I'm ineligible for rehire as I missed my 2 weeks by 1 day as I lined it up to go with the pay period in my mind thinking it was helpful. I don't know what they did but when I was at JLG I was probably bring home 1000/pay period and when I left M*Modal it was down to possibly 700 if that.

I have another question.  When one does a draft in VR, does MT get paid for all lines in the draft or would an MT get paid if it has to be edited.  I will be trying to learn this in the next few weeks and I am scared to death I will not catch on and then I might be without a job.   I have a feeling I might not get paid for the whole draft report.  Then again it may depend on the company.  Any opinions please.   Thanks  ...

Would appreciate feedback from anyone using M-Modal, especially Webmedx Enterprise MTs. Dreading the conversion and wondering if my fears are well founded. I'm pretty fast straight typing but rarely get more than 50 lines more an hour with current VR. Seems all it takes is just one lousy report to negate the lines made on the decent reports. Afraid it's just going to be worse with M-Modal and the whole drop-down heading thing. Anyone have any encouragement to offer? ...

I know there are a lot of comments on here about M-modal being horrible and I have to definitely agreed, it is the only VR I have used so nothing to really compare it to but cannot do many more lines per hour than I transcribe (usually about 275 lph or so), anyone willing to share how much they do on M-modal and how long the account has been on VR?  Just my curiosity since I don't seem to make any progress in increasing my lines per hour.  Thanks in advance. ...
