Idea for the quality essay (discussed in threads below) - Des

Posted: May 05, 2013

Line rates: Why are experienced MTs being paid the same rates as newbies?

These MTSOs state that an experienced MT should end up with more money because he/she is able to produce more lines than a newbie. I contest this by stating that experienced MTs are also producing HIGHER QUALITY lines and can do so with less help and less supervision (and, of course, much faster), and even if both the newbie and the experienced MT produced the same number of lines, since the experienced MT's lines are of much higher quality, wouldn't it be logical that the experienced MT get a higher line rate?

just an idea...

(P.S. I haven't read every post in those threads, so if this was already discussed, I apologize for the duplication.)

You ask why? - see my answer

Because they dont care. They care about lining their own pockets. They dont care about quality, they use that as a slogan to recuit more work. Its smoke and mirrors. Is a mirge. A dirty, horrible nightmare.

It was simply a suggestion for the quality essay. - Des

I'm fully aware of the ethics (or lack thereof) of MTSOs. In one of the posts below, an MT had asked for suggetions or ideas that could be submitted by all MM MTs for their quality essay.

I wasn't posing a question to the MTStars board; just simply offering an idea.

Oh, Im sorry. I didnt realize my answer had a format - that you chose!

[ In Reply To ..]
I was simply offering my answer, and did not realize that it was not allowed. I now see that you control the world and shall go cower in my corner.

By the way, the essay is done, so a lot of good your suggestions are now!
Again, I was not posing a question to the MTStars board. - Des

Read the post (both posts) FULLY before you jump to accusations.

Again, I was simply offering an IDEA for the essay. In other words, the "question" you claim I was asking TO THE MTSTARS BOARD was, in fact, a question for MM, NOT THE MTSTARS BOARD... again.

It appears to be YOU who's demanding things be in your format (your format based on your misinterpretation) and that I should just "cower down in my corner."

Furthermore, I was only trying to help, though it appears that you're only interested in something that helps you and only you, and who gives a rat's backside if it helps someone else, right? Now, THAT'S a question for you.
Your idea was a good one. Don't pay any - attention to the rants of that head case.

???????????? = QUESTION!!!!!

MM wants the work done as cheap as possible. No matter - who does it. Cheap as possible. nm

Just to clarify - I'm NOT asking MTStars board a question. - Des

[ In Reply To ..]
I know "why." I'm only offering an IDEA to be submitted as the quality essay to MModal to ask THEM the question.

It just didn't realize that a simple idea in good faith to try to help my fellow MTs would be so widely and negatively misunderstood.

Though, in all fairness, if I'd have said "MModal" instead of "MTSO," maybe my post would've been clearer. I just figured since I was posting on the MModal board and referring to an MModal essay, who I was referring to would've been understood.

Des - when I read your original post - see message

I totally understood the context of what you wrote. Yes, there was a question, but it was just written as part of the statement, and not meant to be answered by anyone here. I think some people need to get a life and quit picking on others because they are so unhappy they have to bring everyone else down. Geeesh! Get a life people.

So its kind of irrevalent, right?

Not posing a question, just stating a fact.

How about if they are going to - "celebrate"

[ In Reply To ..]
MT week they just do so and preferably not with the little idiotic trinkets they have been sending out for the past several years (i.e. Chapstick on a chain). Otherwise just let it die. At this point it's just adding insult to injury.

They havent sent Chapstick in several years. Now - we get nuttin. nm

No Chapstick, just a lottery chance - that you pay taxes on.

Somehow, the Chapstick was better.

What??!! No lottery tickets since I have worked here - for 2 Christmi. nm

Not official lottery tickets; just drawing names - for prizes

that kind of a lottery

Chapstick is very appropriate - message that they - want us to kiss their (CENSORED) more

Remember the together we can mouse pad? - Remind us of all the time we spend at the computer

[ In Reply To ..]
That mouse pad was insulting. Together we can? Do what? Put pictures of our family in our mouse pad so we see actually see them because we are at our computers 12-14 hours a day to make up 8 hours? That was insulting. I would rather they not do anything than insult us. Offer to at least pay a stipend for our phone and internet. Offer some sort of bonus/incentive plan. A $10 Walmart card is not a reward and neither is whatever crap they decide to mail out this year.

I am (was) paid at 6 and 9 before I resigned for - a non-MT job. See msg

[ In Reply To ..]
I think they are trying to lean more toward paying everyone the same across the board like Nuance. From what I am reading here, everyone is starting out at 4cpl now with MModal regardless of your tier level. If they are going to do this, then what is the point in having tiers?

Why pay me 4 cpl to type op-notes, cardiac caths and other invasive procedures and then pay someone else the same 4cpl who can only do H&Ps, consults and discharge summaries? Makes no sense to me, as obviously the person who is experienced to type all work types is a much more valuable MT when you look at the big picture.

And I dont mean that to put anyone down, but in all other areas of he workforce, the person who has the most experience and can handle more responsibilities is is always paid more. MT is the only profession that I know of leaning towards this method of pay. Even fast food resturants pay the employees who has been there the longest more money, same with factories.

This is exactly right, and it's the reason... - (see message)

[ In Reply To ..]
.....MTSOs are losing, or will eventually lose, all their best, most experienced MTs. The quality of the work is falling fast, and I contend that this is one of the prime reasons that high-quality MTs who can quit are doing so--because they're paid the same pitiful amount as a new MT, who is getting much easier work to boot. It's not the only reason, but it's a biggie.

Another reason I think the quality is falling so much is that the MTs who do have the experience to know better are letting VR errors slide because it's too time-consuming to fix them for free. One of my former coworkers got dinged on QA for typing "Pean clamp" (the QA person said it should be left "peon clamp," believe it or not), and the coworker had to fight for weeks to get that decision reversed!!! That is just beyond ridiculous.

I'm a very experienced MT, and I left this field for reasons like this. I just can't let myself do the sloppy, error-prone work that many are letting slip through because they have to push so fast to make any money...and even when people crank out the work, the compensation still isn't compatible with the effort it takes.

MTSOs have been - functioning in

[ In Reply To ..]
bizarro world (paying less for more experience) for so long that it is normal for them and who can really understand why. Everyone seems to think their world will come crashing down around them sooner or later, but it hasn't happened after all these years. In fact they appear to be doing better than ever. Go figure.

Quality Essay
May 01, 2013

Is anyone having a problem coming up with words to write up a quality essay? They gave us the outline and everything, but they mention all their great tools, and I think of the report look up with all the errors, and think... Is this the quality you wanted?   I wanted to mention that penalizing us for QA use promotes poor quality, that putting us on a gazillion accounts promotes poor quality!   I guess I am just feeling to crabby today to write an essay. I just wish they did a ra ...

Been Reading All The Threads Below.
May 09, 2012

I hear both sides.  My only problem is that I have been here for 8 years and making just over half what I started at.  Why would they have spent the last decade cutting, cutting, and then cutting some more only to give a raise now?  Also don't like to be a negative Nellie, but just don't see them giving us a raise.  I really, really hope I am wrong, but the only thing they EVER do is try to make their bottom dollar bigger.  I have seen a lot of newbies here on ...

Threads Below Regarding Straight Typing And Are You Happy
Nov 30, 2014

It just seems to me like this particular person was trying to stir up a hornet's nest, which I think they did.  That person then posted right after the first post, asking about which companies were straight typing only.  One response, I believe was that this person should "go ahead and apply at a certain company anyway, because people may not work out." I think that some people just don't seem to "get it."  A company will advertise for a reason and that is that they hav ...

On A Serious Note - FTR Essay -

That Winning Essay

MT Essay Contest

That we are not typists. This is something MTSOs need to realize. There is a skill set required here that goes beyond being a typist and speech recognition technology. That we realize as soon as a machine can replace us, we'll be gone. That it makes me laugh that I re ...
