I can't be THAT good! - Curious Jo

Posted: Oct 13, 2010

Y'all are freaking me out!  All this talk about PM and being watched when uploading or downloading a job, etc. etc. etc.  I am only a lowly second-tier MT.  I have been corrected a lot and it's all valid -- or an opinion based correction.  All my corrections have fallen in the minor minor category, but the way y'all talk you'd think I'd be let go by now.  OMG people!  Our QA person just transferred to some other department, and I suspect all your observations may have been at least part of what pushed her away.  So of course I will pay more attention to what this newby will have to say.  But look people, if you haven't been out in the workforce lately, here's a clue:  EVERYWHERE EVERYWHERE EVERYWHERE employees are being watched, expected to OUTPERFORM themselves as well as everybody else, and being asked to do it for LESS MONEY.  Our Government is encouraging this by providing monetary encouragement to the employers to HIRE MORE PEOPLE!! -- thus making that unemployment percentage go down.  AND, the only way employers can hire more people is to reduce the pay for everybody.  Do you think MedQuist will be left out of this wave?

So, good grief, get over it already!  Keep working as best as you can and OMG, quit nit-picking too.  Do you have a job?  Are you short on work?  Can you do something about it -- like ASK your CCM how you might be of more help in meeting scheduling issues?  Don't cut off your nose to spite your own face.  TALK TO YOUR CCM -- at least ask if you can somehow make more money and meet a scheduling issue too!  Become flexible and you will become more valuable.  It's not just about production you know!

As for the "checking for errors" window that pops up, that happens on INCOMING jobs to my desktop -- and for the OUTGOING jobs, it is checking for all KINDS of issues -- not necessarily quality.  Like maybe, virus/software issues, all that bad stuff on the web, or prying eyes.  MAYBE the word "errors" represents more than we realize.  GEEZ  Get over yourselves already!!!   Hey, good luck too.  I mean, it IS hard keeping up with all the changes and still making money.  Just do the best you can, and if that ain't paying the bills, well baby, maybe you better check into going back out into that wonderful workforce where you have to communicate politely with all those people IN PERSON.

UGHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Talk to my CCM? - Been there...done that...bought the

T-shirt.

Any other fanciful suggestions?

I had NJA for my ENTIRE shift for 4 days in a row. And I'm a tier 3!

When that happens to you, you will have license to tell me what to do about my situation. As it is now, I have the Dept. of Labor involved.

K?

I can't be THAT good - Jo

[ In Reply To ..]
change shifts? What are your priorities? Like I said, I can't be that good.

My priorities? - To do the job I was hired to do

[ In Reply To ..]
and for MQ to fulfill the contract I signed when I was hired.

Change shifts?

Sorry...not all of us have the luxury of working whenever it suits MQ. Sure, I will put in extra hours when I can...work OT when I can. I try to make up NJA WHEN I CAN, but I will not watch my children grow up through a window or miss every school function so MQ can make millions off my back.

I signed a contract that states work will be available during my stated hours (yeah...it actually says that in my contract...and there is no fine print...I've talked with attorneys at the DOL already to see if MQ can somehow weasel out of this). My priorities go far beyond being chained to this desk 24 hours a day in order to care for my family. I have a life beyond this computer.

Anyway, I have been dealing with the Dept. of Labor over nonpayment of wages and also some other issues. They are extremely interested in many facets of how MQ is conducting business and how so-called employees are being treated.

In all my years as an MT and with all the companies I have worked for, I have never worked for a company as low down and underhanded as MQ.

And before you tell me to go...don't worry, I will just as soon as I can, but not before I can do my part to have some eyes opened.

I had it like you once...and not so long ago. Then one day, it just changed...just like that. Now I earn pay checks that would make the biggest, toughest man you know get down on his knees and cry. Last check was $108.00 for 2 weeks because they didn't pay me for my lines (I made more than enough to be over min wage) and they only paid me 1 hour PTO when I requested more than that.

So...maybe these things don't happen to you, but they ARE happening to some of us. And I'm glad for you, but the solutions of "talking to your CCM and being flexible" are not always the fix.

Gotta run...a report finally came in after 13 minutes of waiting.

what do you really want - Bad Karma

bought the t-shirt? Save your pennies so you can afford to be out of work.

You're not, don't kid yourself . .. - HA

FYI: People are not getting their pay cut EVERYWHERE, EVERYWHERE, EVERYWHERE. In fact, most people I know have gotten yearly raises and have not had their pay cut at all!

Everybody I know in my circle has gotten a pay - raise at least yearly

[ In Reply To ..]
EXCEPT ME FOR THE LAST 6 YEARS. In spite of the economy, everybody else is still getting raises that I talk to UNLESS YOU WORK FOR MEDQUIST.

MQ was at cutting edge of US pay-cut trend - alphamt

[ In Reply To ..]
How do U define pay cut? We have been experiencing reduction in pay since the start of Speech Wreck. Been with MQ since then or just lately? The trend continues, and now we are footing the bill for software glitches and paying IT by having downtime and lost production (PAY). If you need a picture to get that, you are either management, privileged with another income in your household, never check your paycheck, have too little experience to know better, and/or an American ignoramus.

has all the salary people's pay been cut? - tired of struggling

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been lucky that I don't have a lot of issues that others have had. Work has been steady most of the time. But I remember several months back when there was this company-wide posting in MQCentral about how they weren't going to do their across-the-board pay raises this year. WTF? When did we ever get something like that? Someone screwed up big time letting us, the ones who make it possible for their big paychecks, to see that email.

Re: Struggling--That's probably why they did - the email purge!

I hate this company.

I totally could have written this myself! - justmoi

2014 - Not A Good Year For This MT — But I Found A Good Fit (finally)
Jan 12, 2015

Rarely do I start discussion on mtstars - however, 2014 was a particularly challenging year for myself - an experienced MT/Editor (15+ years). However, I realize that many other MTs may be in the same position, i.e., having many years devoted to working at the Big MTSOs including “the M,” and “the N” and (now to be included) “the T” following close behind in total numbers of MT/Editors on staff. (Hint: Sure most of you know the M, the N and the T - and the names have been int ...

Good Friday; Good Bye Spheris
Apr 02, 2010

Well Good Friday to me.  I left Spheris.  It is indeed the best Friday for me in a very long time.  I've had it with their lousy platform, Mafia QA (they try their best to kill your spirit), mandatory this, mandatory that, do this, don't do that, change this, don't change that; no, don't change this, don't change that, and on and on and on, and now their bankruptcy.  No PTO for the next 4 months to keep the clients satisfied during ...

Good Bye MT
Nov 02, 2009

I so look forward to these last 5 years going by fast:  Going back to college to get a  degree and walking away from MT never looking back.  If it wasnt for paying for my schooling, I'd be out of this by now.  If things get too bad I'd consider cutting lunch meat, stocking shelves at the neighborhood grocery store, whatever.  The only up side to my 10+ years of doing MT work has been able to stay home for my kids and making pocket change.&nb ...

Who Is MQ ASR Good For?
Jul 01, 2010

Makes no difference that I know of to the dictator.  Doesn't save him or her any money. Probably a negative for the patient, as I sincerely believe there is a bigger chance of their medical record being less than accurate. Sure is not a plus for us MT/ME's, except those extremely few who seem to have the right account, I would venture a guess of about 5% of us.  The only positive I see is to the client.  They are getting lied to, that if they go with ASR, it is such a g ...

Trying To Be A Good MME
Jun 11, 2011

I have been an MT for 8 years before moving up to the MME position recently.  I told myself that I would never nitpick as I experienced in the past.  I still hold true to that.  We are to only fill in the blanks unless we note an obvious error, then its full QA, except we get paid the fill-in-the-blank line rate rather than 100% QA line rate (3 cpl rather than 4).  However, if we fill in the blank and NOT catch an error that is caught on the MTs audit, we get clobbered ( ...

I'm Getting Out Of The MT Biz For Good!
Jan 20, 2012

After struggling financially and being increasingly unhappy with my job for three years (yes, only three years) I am officially DONE with MT work. I have other skills that would be more fullfilling to pursue and i'm going to do it. Honestly, i'd settle for a job at a grocery store at this point. At least i'd have a steady paycheck. I don't know if it's just me, but the monotony of this job makes me crazy. Just doing the same thing all day, every day, no socialization, QA ...

All The Good Ones Are Gone Now.
Jan 08, 2013

I had been feeling so fortunate, getting mostly good dictators in recent months, but now, in the past couple of weeks, all I'm getting are dictators with thick accents with bad sound quality and static or female dicators with high-pitched, monotone voices that are like fingernails on a chalk board. I keep thinking it's a temporary phase, but there seems to be not much let up. It's so discouraging. I hope to see the day when all this overseas outsourcing comes to a halt with new ...

How Sad It Is To Be So Good At Something
Oct 18, 2013

I could do MT in my sleep.  I fill in blanks with almost a 100% completion rate.  My QA scores are excellent.  Any specialty, name it, I know it.  And yet I'm embarrassed to tell anyone what I do because NOBODY CARES ANYMORE.  And I can't find a job doing anything else either. There just aren't any jobs that really require this skill.  It's just sad.  I wish I had learned to anything besides this. ...

May 16, 2014

There have been so many times that I come to this board and see MTs venting about MTSOs that are hard to work for, don't pay enough, don't give enough work, don't pay on time, nit-picky QA, etc., etc., etc.  I have been an MT for more than 15 years and recently acquired pretty big account.  I have a few MTs that I have contracted and in the process of training.  When I hired I STRESSED that I needed someone flexible, someone that HAS EXTENSIVE OP note experience, an ...

Good Ol' Days
Oct 29, 2009

Remember the good old days, when we worked either in a transcription pool, the medical records department or at a doctor's office?  I was trying to figure out what a doctor was saying in a report and dreading leaving a QA marker for fear of "points"... I remember going to hunt down the doctors in the old days, sitting down to have conversations with them. They would help us fill in the blanks and mostly apologize for not speaking clearly (at least they did at the hospital where I ...
