I am so confused on whether this is good pay or not...help!
Thank you
Without knowing the difficulty of the transcription, platform, turn-around, etc, it is very difficult give you a definitive answer as to whether those rates are good or bad. What is bad for one transcriptionist might be considered fantastic for another.
Most transcription services will not post their rates, but I found a couple that did which I posted below. You might be able to better judge what you are getting paid based on what the service is charging its customers, in regards to per minute or per page. Remember, this is what THEY charge the customer, so they should probably (I would guess) pay you approximately half of what they charge.
As far as per word, when I was in typing school (a hundred years ago), 5 characters equaled 1 word. So, since most medical transcription companies pay per a 65-character line (including spaces and punctuation), that would be 13 words per line. If you were given different information as to what a “word” constitutes, you will have to adjust the numbers below.
I am assuming you are straight typing and not doing voice recognition since you ask about business and legal. For medical transcription, rates are anywhere from 6 cents per 65-character line for a newbie employee, up to 11 cents per line for an experienced independent contractor.
In your example 0.0030 or 0.0040 per word, that would be equivalent to the following cents per line based on a 65-character line (including spaces and punctuation):
0.0030 per word x 13 words per line = 4 cents per line
0.0040 per word x 13 words per line = 5 cents per line
You will have to consider your experience and the difficulty of the transcription, and based on the information you gather, only you can decide if you are willing to work for that amount on a consistent basis or, more importantly, if you can pay all your bills and make a living off that amount of pay.
Hope this information helps you. Good Luck on your endeavors.
