Anyone happy at Medquist currently? - SeriousMT

Posted: Jan 03, 2012

The reason I ask is that I am currently an IC with another company that is only paying a lousy .065 after being with them for 1-1/2 years.  I'm also an RMT for what it's worth.

Medquist just made me an offer as a part-time employee (they call it tier 3 -- I presume this is level 3 being referred to in other MT posts?) working 24 hours/week.  My hours seem fairly decent, and since my cpl rate is higher than my current IC job, it is a nice bump up in salary since Medquist presumably takes out taxes prior to paying me.

So...while this sounds well and good, I am wondering whether there are HAPPY people working for them right now.  The position is in acute care, which is what I'm happiest doing. I'm used to the BS that goes along with it (ESL, long pauses, background noise, etc.), but I am more concerned about the Medquist QA, culture, etc.

Any feedback would be helpful -- I need to make a decision as to what to do this week!

Thanks!

Very little straight typing. Plan on ASR 90% of time. - Easy stuff goes OS, plan on SM

doing the crap work. That being said, I am happy sometime, when I am averaging over $10 per hour, but those times are few and far between. I do not have to support my family, thank goodness, so that is why I have luxery of taking my time to decide where I am going from here.

Used to be happy. Tier 3 means nothing at Medquist. If you should have to send a report to QA, you are paid tier 1 thanks to their "First Time Right" policy they established by (un)educated idiots. I've not had work since 12/26 because of the holidays. If you're one of the lucky ones to actually transcribe, the pay is decent. Most have ASR now and you are not paid what you're worth, and even less if a report goes to QA. Been with them 12 years part-time. Don't make the mistake of thinking this account they are offering you, will always be so. Medquist is famous for jerking you around. I've lost track how many different accounts I've had, some with 5-7 page long client profiles to read. If you're reading the comments on here about Medquist..take heed.

I think you will start off happy - but take heed

[ In Reply To ..]
Usually they start you off on 1 acccount and mostly typing. That rapidly changes. Whatever they offered for ASR rate, probably 4 cpl, is what you will make. Remember, if more than 5% goes to QA, you will lose 3 cpl, so you will make 1 cpl for anything else going to QA.

Also, be prepared to do over 15 accounts per day. Its a job.

5% QA? - mouse

I was under the impression, from what I'm told by CM, because of the "First Time Right" policy...everything that goes to QA, regardless of %, takes a pay cut on that job (hence the name "First Time Right")...? I wish I knew for sure what the deal is with that.

Its anything over 5%, which might only be 1 job - depending on your lines...

[ In Reply To ..]
I think they make it hard to understand for a reason.

If you send 12% of your work to QA, you will be lowered pay for the 7% over the first 5%, not on everything else you type that week.

Let me just warn you. I have been full time here for over 12 years. I am supposed to start working at 6 a.m. I had no work this morning for the first 3 hours. They give you a schedule that they tell you you MUST adhere to, but then you have no work and they expect you to make it up at a later time or use your vacation time. In my opinion, why make us stick to a schedule if they can't provide us any work in those particular hours? It's ridiculous and it happens VERY frequently!

ditto... - mouse

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes I know that very well. It's a given around any holiday, but especially from Thanksgiving until at least mid Jan, that work is far and few between. I've not had work except for 2 days, since 12/26. I am not available to MQ or anyone else at any and all hours/7 days/wk. I will take it without pay after they exhaust my PTO, which is why I've not had a vacation in years. Yes, I know that feeling.

Plan on making only what they offered you on the - ASR rate

[ In Reply To ..]
And you probably will be making minimum wage even though you say the line count is higher than where you are now.

Additionally... how are they still hiring when there is no work???

Re: tiers. "Supposedly" the higher tier you are, the more experience you have (tier 3/4 can do op notes, etc.), the more you are paid. As I said, tier 3, 4 means absolutely nothing when it goes to QA. You're paid tier 1. Some accts. don't give you the option of sending a report with a blank directly to the client, even if you as an experienced MT feel a MME could NOT fill that blank, some accts send it to QA anyway and you take the pay cut (tier 1). I currently am on such an account that has so much background noise, dictators cut themselves off, one eats her way through her entire dictation, and there's no choice but to leave a blank...but I have to take the pay cut for it because I don't have the option of NOT sending it to QA. Not all accts are like this, but they are out there. I also am tier 3, 20+ years experience...and have several times averaged out my pay to a per hour wage. Are you ready? one pay period I worked for MQ for $8.62/hour, another pay period was $9.00/hour. If I'm lucky and have good dicators/accounts, I might hit $10. Many ASR reports take you longer to "edit" than if you'd typed it straight out. Ok I'm done. Good luck.

Hard to be happy - at MQ

It's hard to be happy when you are making half the money you made 20 years ago. However, if this is just a part-time job for some extra money you may be okay. If it's a full-time job needed to pay basic necessities, forget it. All the money-making accounts go off-shore. What's left is so bad that even if you do get work, it makes you want to cry, scream or bang your head against the wall.

Yes, I am happy here - for the most part

I am also a tier 3, made just over $30K last year (yes, is down from 54K from my high year, but oh well). I have plenty of work because I have a great CCM who makes sure I have accounts with work and plenty of back up accounts. I also work weekends when the work volume is high so that makes a big difference too. If you insist on working M-F 9-5 you will definitely run out of work. I did not run out one time over the xmas holiday. While the job is not perfect, it allows me to work at home, make fairly decent money considering the overall market, and allows me to go to school where I am working on a degree to move to another profession. I would suggest to you to establish a good repoire with your CCM and be very communicative to him/her about the accounts you receive and giving you back up accounts. Be persistent if you run out of work and be open to schedule changes to times when more work is available. I know I will probably get bashed for saying anything good about this place, but that is how I feel. Good luck to you!

THANK YOU - Depends on accounts

Stopped posting my situation is almost exactly the same as yours (must be same accounts/area) because people will just call you a liar. I think the MQ board is just for people who are unhappy with MQ and not for the ones who are fortunate to be in one of the good areas of MQ. I have a wonderful CCM, never out of work, OT a lot of weekends, and my shift is when work is available. I do 90% ASR and still make much more than the minimum wage others make it seem like everyone at MQ makes.

Now I will be called a liar, troll, management, stirring the pot, whatever the buzz word is this week on this board, or that this is the same poster posting as someone else, LOL. Still does not change the fact that not all areas of MQ are horrible like what is made to seem like on this board.

Before you even consider working for these folks, do your research. Research the transcriptionists lawsuit of many years agom how it was handled, and how it was magically done away with by the judge. Just sayin.

All of your great feedback has been most appreciated today. While I was posting my original query, I actually received another offer for an IC position paying .075 (going up to .08 after 100% off QA), which is pretty decent I think considering my on-the-job experience is just coming up on two years. I had been testing for both of these companies at the same time.

I think I am going to stay away from big bad MQ for now -- just doesn't sound like a great place to be presently!!

Thanks again!!!!!

I made this year what I made in 1991. - Serious MT also.

I have work all the time, mostly ASR. Happy -- nope. Only good thing is I don't have to get dressed and thanks to MQ, I now don't have a car since I can't afford one. Have applied for numerous positions, but since nobody has ever, ever heard of MQ, it is like I have been unemployed for 10 years now.

Have been with MedQuist since they bought out Spheris in 04/2010, with Spheris for 11 years before that. Feel like I've gone from bad to worse and didn't think it was possible. Supes are overwhelmed, not very accessible. Communication/interaction is minimal. Was just switched (forced) to ASR, not told we'd be making HALF per line vs straight trans, lost $250 per pay check. I'd look elsewhere or stay put.

I get 4.8 cpl for SR and 8 cpl for straight transcription and I am Tier 3 and do acute care work. Very little clinic notes anymore. I work 24 hours per week.

Happy at Medquist - popsicletoz

Que stionable. MedQuist has cut pay, cut benefits to paying only 70% insurance plan, no 401k match and I can only believe it will get worse in the future. This is the worst company I have ever, ever worked for.

New To MedQuist Via ETransPlus, Is Anyone Happy Here?
Oct 09, 2011

I am new to MedQuist via the eTransPlus buyout.  Reading all these posts is truly scary.  I know people that are rather happy tend not to post as much (hopefully they are too busy working!), but is anyone, I mean ANYONE, happy or at least not ready to jump off a tall building working for MedQuist?  I am trying hard not to panic just yet, but it is getting harder!  So, does anyone have anything positive (even kinda sorta) to say about MedQuist? MedQuist Cuts Pay In Half - Happy Holidays!

I've been at TTS for almost 3 years and I have nothing but positive things to say about TTS.  I never have to guess what TTS expects from me, and I do my best to deliver that on a consistent basis.  Communication flows freely and efficiently.  My team leader and 2 shift leads are EXCELLENT managers in my opinion.  Everything I invest in my job comes back to me and then some.  I can recommend TTS to anybody unapologetically. ...

Is Anyone Happy Being An MT
Oct 30, 2010

I am surprised at just how many or your are miserable with what you do.  I am a new MT ans I am also having trouble finding work.  It's not easy.  I can see that having editing to fall back on would be good.  I have read the posts about don't do this just to work from home.  I have small children and my only choice would be daycare if I went to work somewhere, which would eat up half my pay check.  Sometimes it's not just money, sometimes it's fo ...

Hi, everyone.   I was just wondering if there are any MTs out there that are happy with their jobs and are able to make some good money in this profession.  I have read lots and lots of posts, and it seems like a huge percentage of the posts are about how bad people's jobs are and how little money they are making.  I understand people need to vent, but there have to be some MTs that are happy and making money.  I recently graduated from one of the top MT schools and ...

I am wondering if there is a single person on this forum who is an MT who is happy with their job (including the miniscule pay that would be appropriate compensation if it were around 1975 rather than 2013 or lived in another country in which one can buy a lot more with 50 cents).
