Looking For Happy MTs! - sefrost53
Posted: Nov 17, 2013
Some of these forums are filled with folks who are frighteningly unfulfilled. I realize that human nature, being what it is, will complain if given half a chance. However, I am a recent graduate of Everett CC and am starting a new job on Monday. I would like to hear from anyone who is happy and productive in their MT career and not looking for a new one. I did MT before receiving formal instruction and enjoyed it immensely, despite my maddening 10:1 slowness and ignorance of even the most mundane medical stuff. I'd like to hear someone vent their joy instead of rage!

While this business has definitely changed in the past 14 years that I have been working (wages going down, unfortunately), I still like what I'm doing. I'm still working for three local doctors (my originals), and then I work for a major service. I appreciate that this job has allowed me to always be available to my kids, and I do still enjoy the work.
Good luck to you in your new job. I hope you enjoy it too!

Thanks for your encouraging reply! I am so looking forward to tomorrow morning, which will be for installation only, then brief training on the platforms, and after that a paid 2-week initiation to assess my skill set. My goal is to someday have my own clinic. I've done transcribing work in the past and I actually missed not going out to work every day, but I was younger then and more peppy. My car was too! --sf.

Everett CC that has typos on their web page outlining their transcription/editing program??
I love what I do, and I am very good at it. I am happy with my current job duties and I am productive. However, I am NOT happy with the direction the field has taken over the past several years. Why should I be? While the cost of living has steadily increased every year, I am in a job where the pay has, if I am lucky, remained stagnant, but more likely has declined. Now, I am being asked to learn new skills (voice/speech recognitition and editing) while taking a 50% pay cut. Of course I am unfulfilled in my job.

I am so used to seeing typos from companies that should know better, wondering how the people involved got their jobs in the first place. It kinda drives me crazy but I take solace from knowing that I can and do perform better. I already know how hard one has to work to make a dollar in this business, but 90% of the MT Stars' posts are from people who are SO miserable and I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who is not. So my glasses are not rose-colored but perhaps just this side of light pink. I learned SRT Editing at Everett, which is much easier and faster than typing a report from scratch, altho not as much fun. More remote jobs are created every year, but at this point it's unlikely that I would be hired for an outside job due to my age. I tried for 3 years with a very good resume, to no avail. I am grateful that I can generate some revenue w/o claiming my SSI yet.
I think you've answered your own question - Ayn
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, 90% of the posters on here are miserable, so obviously there are some (10% by your estimation) who are not miserable. I am not "miserable" in my job - I love what I do - but I am very disheartened by the changes in the career, the MTSOs who treat their MTs and editors as slaves, the pay cuts forced on us for learning new technology, the colleges & "certification" programs that mislead newbies into believing this field is a "career," and, yes, the naivete of the newbies who just think all the nay-sayers are old, crotchety, negative, lazy MTs who should be replaced with smiling energetic go-getters. This used to be a profession where one could earn a living and support a family. Now, it is a job - often below minimum wage - for someone to supplement an income and generate some revenue while taking care of toddlers or waiting to retire.
That is why so many of us are miserable -- not because of the job itself, but because of what the MTSOs have turned it into.
And, as an aside, I do not believe that SRT editing is "much easier and faster than typing a report from scratch" in the real world outside of the cleaned up classroom work you were exposed to.
If someone is lucky enough to get a job at a clinic and lucky enough to have that job last for another 12 months without the clinic moving to point-and-click or outsourcing to a service - hallelujah. She/he should count their lucky stars that they got one of the "good" MT/editor jobs left and should squirrel away every nickel they can because chances are that dream job won't last long.
I do sincerely wish you luck in your job, but I think you should be realistic. When 90% of the people are telling you the future is not good - chances are it's not good.
My Own Question - sefrost53
[ In Reply To ..]
Everything you told me has the ring of truth, esp about MTSOs, and I also believe that those MTs who have had it with this profession are NOT lazy malcontents but are just tired of being taken advantage of. I was dismayed when I realized how hard I will have to work to make a decent paycheck and it is disheartening, indeed. I must weigh that against the price of gas and lunch and an office wardrobe. Re: the cleaned-up SRT reports in school, well, that's just plain scary. I've been told my new job will be 90% editing, so I hope I can do it. I'll give it my best shot.

I loved being an MT, but like the poster above me I am not happy with the direction MT has taken, i.e., the pay cuts for editing. I would not be happy if I worked for an MTSO and encountered NJA when I needed to work.
That being said, I no longer work as an MT because my job was eliminated when my employer outsourced the work to India. I was very lucky to find something else the involves doing QA but that is probably only about 30% of my job now. I want to retire in 2 or 3 years, but if I were younger, considering the way things are going, I probably would do something different. I think it would be difficult for anyone to vent their joy at being an MT in the current climate.
From what you say, making money must not be your major motivation for doing MT, it sounds as if you enjoy it for other reasons.
From my experience on this site and from life in general, negativity and unhappiness feed on themselves and develop a life of their own. There are probably people who are fulfilled and happy, only none of them post here. In fact, they may be afraid to come forward. Anyone who says they are happy and has a great job usually gets attacked from all sides.
The Truth About Truth - sefrost53
[ In Reply To ..]
Making money is a huge deal, certainly. But I want to do something I can stand. I've heard stories about 0.13/line back in the old days, but I think I can make $10/hr doing something I like more than other types of clerical work where I have to deal with...(yikes)...PEOPLE. My resume is all clerical and I don't want to start completely from scratch. I just have to hang on for a few years until my SSI kicks in. hahahaha...

I am fulfilled and happy, love MT, and, although I do not make the big bucks I did in the 90s, I still make $25 an hour. And the reason I don't post my company's name is because they do not want to deal with a lot of resumes from people not qualified for the job. (We are a small, East Coast company.) But there ARE good jobs out there. You just have to look harder.

You are so right. I expressed happiness with my job and was definitely attacked. I refuse to feel guilty for the job I have, the great salary/benefits and the satisfaction I get from it. I am sorry for people who have been affected by the decline in MT and by no means do I feel protected from it, but for now and the last 34 years being an MT has served me well. I believe the downfall of this position was MTs working offsite. Initially they were better paid and it seemed a wonderful opportunity. I never experienced working offsite and now I am greatly for it.

I've been doing this job "officially" for over 13 years now. At times it was frustrating, I had low paying jobs, difficult dictators, and frustrating account specs. But my hard work and determination finally paid off and I now have a job I love.
I love working from home with my dog to keep me company, I don't have to drive to work every day or deal with office politics. I don't have to answer phones or find something to wear to work (sweat pants & slippers... ahh!)
I hope I can keep this gig until I retire. I know things are changing and that might not happen, but in the meantime I'm keeping a positive attitude and saving some money for just in case.
I hope you are happy in your new job!
Happy - Sort of

Like the previous post stated, sweat pants and slippers! I too have been around the block with this type of work and I have a pretty decent job now. At least it is straight transcription, no VR and all English speaking doctors. It is clinic notes, so have to grind it out, but for the amount of stress I save, it is okay. I just do what I can. Now, if anything happens with this outfit, would I see another MT job? Probably not, but I do need to work, so I really don't know what I would do; have to wait and see on that one. If you can manage to stay away from the big companies and their slave tactics, i.e., M*Modal, Nuance and some of the others that have been referred to here, then I hope you can find a decent job. That is about all we can hope for; as there isn't any way you can be upwardly mobile as an MT!

I have to say that, altho I am happy you're happy and I DID ask people to post stuff about being happy, our posts about being happy aren't as interesting as the ones where people are tired, impatient, and just plain teed off! Plus I like the ones where they talk about outrageous expectations, quotas and quality standards that can't be met, and basically all the things we need to watch out for to not get taken advantage of! But I had a feeling there were good experiences out there; I just wanted to hear about some for a change! If one is in a position one hates, shame on one for not getting out of it.

Shame on YOU for passing judgement! Many of us are not able to return to school to learn a new profession, due to finances, or disabilities. We continue to do this work for less than one third the income we made doing it 30 years ago! There is a big difference between those who are self supporting and those happy MTs who live off their husband's salary and use MT for extra income. Many have not been able to feed their children, lost their homes and gone homeless.
The statement you made about how much easier it is to edit than transcribe comes from your experience in school which is much different than you will encounter in the working world! It is minutely faster IF they entered the right demographics, don't mispronounce a drug, condition or doctor's name, don't require leaving blanks because they refuse to dictated an ROS or PE in anything better than a hum which does not form any words.
I think you owe we experienced MT/MEs who are still at it a huge apology for your statements.

Regarding my probably not-too-well thought out comment about shame on anyone who doesn't get out of a bad situation, I certainly DO know what it's like to be locked into a job that is nothing but a humiliating, heartless situation, w/o enough pay to justify getting out of bed. But I also know that it is possible and definitely do-able to reinvent oneself. Battered women do it, as well as people in crappy employment. I've been both, and have reinvented myself and restructured my life several times, out of necessity. I already deferred in a previous post to someone else that I realize school is an insulated environment. However, I have to say that over half of the reports at Everett were ESL dictators, many unintelligble. The part about living on my husband's income is hilarious! I wish it were true! Perhaps it is good for ANY of us to rethink passing judgement before we assume this or that! Good one! Thanks for your feisty post!

Now that I have graduated and secured entry-level employment, all I wanted was to get some positive feedback.

I am definitely a happy MT. I have been a MT since 1979 and have exclusively worked in Anatomic Pathology. I have exclusively worked in-house. My salary has done nothing but increased annually. I̢۪ve never experience a shortage of work, always had full benefits. True Transcription has changed a lot over this time but I made certain to improve my skills along with the changes. I only have a four undergraduate degree and plan to retire in approximately 3 years. I love this profession and I believe most of the transcriptionists experiencing difficulty have been the one working at home. Some medical records MT have been displaced as well. I appreciate and am thankful that Pathology has not been affected by the changes in Medical Transcription.

lucky gal! If I could find a job like that, in-house, I would take it in a second and forget about all this work at home business; as we are truly at the mercy of these companies. BUT, in the area where I live there are absolutely no in-house positions; not even radiology or pathology. There was a pathology company a while back who hired in house MTs, but I think they finally bit the bullet and outsourced as well. Anyway, you have a good gig!

Now I'm not saying that in the future our pathologists won't stop using MTs. They may start using SR or outsourcing. As it stands right now, we have 11 full time MTs and they keep us very busy. Don't get too comfortable or confident there, my friend. I worked pathology since 1991, but no more. Our hospital suddenly without warning went to point and click. The pathologists do it all themselves. It could happen to you (although I surely hope it doesn't). Just saying, don't get too confident. Nothing stays the same. Whether you improve your skills or not, if they decide to go with point and click, you're outta there.

California girl - I understand you worked Pathology since 1991,me since 1979. Nothing is consistent except change. I understand that, but you jave to know the culture of your organization. This is a TEACHING HOSPITAL. They have tried SR, we rotate residents annually. SR did not work. We work with several templates but we still need full time transcriptionists. Our volume is over 80,000 cases per year. I CHOSE to remain confident and comfortable. I hear wht you are saying and I understand it. I have only 3 years left to work PERIOD! I think I'll stay here.
Well... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I work in a big, giant TEACHING HOSPITAL, too, and I'm here to tell you that there is nothing easier than point-and-click templates for a pathology EHR. If you don't already have it, you either don't have a decent EHR or your informatics department is incompetent.
As for resident rotations precluding SR...guess again. It takes very little time to train the system to an individual dictator. We have both methods and our SR is front-end, so no MTs needed there, either.
If your facility still has MTs, it is not because you are so big, so special, or too challenging. It is because nobody has pulled the plug on that gravy train yet.
WELL.................. - roybrit
[ In Reply To ..]
Alrighty then!!!! Please curb your hostility/envy, I'm not sure which. This is not a gravy train and our hospital is very big and very special, just ask our patients who come here about the high patient satisfaction scores we get. I'm sorry your experience is what it is, our is different and I'm happy for it. Sorry we can be so mired in our negativity that we can't be happy for someone with a more positive pleasant experience. You have a wonderful day and a very great Thanksgiving!!!!
Neither hostility nor envy here - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
You are not seeing hostility here, and you definitely aren't seeing envy, because I'm not an MT anymore. I know about EHRs and SR because I work on the other side of them now.
It's great that your hospital has such a special reputation and that they are so astoundingly advanced, but it has nothing to do with the issue here. What distresses everyone is the way you seem to turn that into a put-down of everyone else.
The facts are that pathology and radiology transcription is well-suited to SR and templates. If you tried SR and rejected it, you didn't use the SR that I know. If your yearly rotational residents could not be induced to use it ... well, that is just an attitude problem. We have residents rotating in for 3 months who are told that this is what we have ... either type it yourself or use the SR. And they do and they like it because the report appears instantly in the EHR, not days later.
Here is the key: They sign off right then, rather than having to go back in the record later. If you do 800,000 cases a year, or whatever it was, that is 800,000 times that your doctors have to access the record to do the case and 800,000 MORE times to check the MT's work and sign it. That is a stupendous waste of time.
I am glad you have such a great job. It is wonderful that you like it and that they like you. I hope it holds out for your 3 more years.
It just isn't fair to newcomers to paint the misleading picture that all is right with the MT world. Or to gloat about one's good fortune in front of folks who are losing their homes because it isn't.

What distresses everyone is the way you seem to turn that into a put-down of everyone else. (Not everyone is distressed, you are)
We have residents rotating in for 3 months. (Our residents rotate for 4 years)
either type it yourself or use the SR. And they do and they like it because the report appears instantly in the EHR, not days later - (Our hospital cares more about teaching the resident MEDICINE and not TRANSCRIPTION AND/OR CLERICAL FUNCTIONS)
They sign off right then, rather than having to go back in the record later. (residents here do not sign out cases. They look ate the slides, make a tentative diagnosis, review the slides with the staff pathologists and then dictate a microscopic description/final diagnosis)
It just isn't fair to newcomers to paint the misleading picture that all is right with the MT world. Or to gloat about one's good fortune in front of folks who are losing their homes because it isn't. (I have no idea people have lost their homes because of the state of MT. Was it fair to those of us working in hospital while the MTs working from home were "BOASTING" about the panacea of working from home, not having to fight traffic, buy office clothes or worry about office politics? Like everything else this trend has changed and the ones in the positive position are the ones working in-house now.)
The problems with forums and email is that people reading the messages cannot interpret the tone intended. I am not, never has been a boastful person, but I am not sorry or ashamed that this profession has served me well. I delayed my education, spent five years active duty Army, cam home worked full time and went to school full time, while working full time, bought my first home on the GI bill, and have worked hard all my life. I will not apologize for any of it.

Because I was able to work here, and not for a service from home, I kept getting raises and am now over $20 an hour. Go ahead, tell me I'm deluded and that it'll be over soon. For the most part, this is a great job. The flexible hours are the best! I get to stay home in comfortable clothes, go shopping when I need to, rest when I need to. No gas or wardrobe expenses. Also, I find the whole medical world fascinating, and you learn so much! The only downside of MT life is the QA feedback (I would like to ring the team leads' necks sometimes), and the fact that you have no one to talk to, but then that is what this web site is for, at least.

Anyone Happy Oct 02, 2012Been with same company for several years; locked into a corner with DS all day and bored, so not making any $ cause taking breaks constantly. Reading posts on here. Are there any RECOMMENDED acute care companies out there? Seems like they all have a bad rep with the MTs. Anyone happy? ...
Happy With Job Nov 06, 2012I understand how frustrated many people are with the way things are going with MT jobs. I am not posting this to make anyone feel worse, but to let people know that there are some good jobs in MT. I work for a private local medical office. I had been worried, too, as our office offered voice recognition to docs and some use it. A lot got frustrated, mostly the ones who want their notes to be correct, and went back to using our services. I had even been looking at online M ...
Is Anyone Happy Where They Are? Jan 28, 2013Just wondering... can anyone recommend a company where they are happy? Or is the general consensus to find another career? Thank you for your help/replies. ...
Anyone Happy At TTS? Feb 17, 2013I was wondering if anyone is happy with TTS. I have read the archives, as well as some other posts and it doesn't look good. I am starting with them soon and was hoping I didn't dig myself a grave. Thanks. ...

Are You A Happy MT? Jun 05, 2013I was laid off as an MT a couple of months ago. I have been looking for part time jobs elsewhere as not sure I want to pursue MT work again as the pay is poor, the work is not there a lot of the time, and I think I need a change of scenery! I was wondering if there is anyone on this forum that is happy with the MT company they work for and would be willing to share who they work for as I do not have a clue who to try and test with if I decide to go that route again. I have some ...
Happy MTs/QCs...I'm Looking For A Job Jun 28, 2013Looking for some MTs/QCs that are happy where they work. I would like to change companies, but do not want to spend countless hours testing, as you all know, just to end up finding out something bad in the interview process or worse, after I've already accepted a position with somebody.
If anybody is happy with their company and would recommend it, please respond. I am happy being an IC or employee. ...
Happy... Oct 04, 2013Just wanting to hear some happy stories. When I was first acquired by Nuance from my previous employer, I wasn't happy but I have to say that over the past 2 years it has turned out to be pleasant. At first, I was very resistant and got all upset over Fiesa and marks being made. I had to realize it wasn't personal and I also had to realize that the mistakes were mine. Anyway, just wanted to read some positive stories on here. Every time I visit the Nuance ...
Anybody Happy? Oct 20, 2013I am wondering if there is a single person on this forum who is an MT who is happy with their job (including the miniscule pay that would be appropriate compensation if it were around 1975 rather than 2013 or lived in another country in which one can buy a lot more with 50 cents). I think the job in terms of its duties is fine. It's just the pay that I begrudge. You can "earn" just as much being on disability SSI, which I was on before getting in this. But I'd still rather be finan ...
Still Happy... Dec 06, 2013Sunday it will be 2 months I have been at my new position since leaving MM. I no longer need to take Prilosec daily and my dr. has decreased my BP med. Furthermore, I was asked after a month if I would like to do full time editing at 6 cpl AND I get paid for every single line I edit....not less than half that MM pays their MMEs. So far, every pay check has been on time and accurate. Two months out and I am making more than I ever made at MM and I expect it to increase as my skills get even b ...
Happy MTs? Jan 07, 2014I see a lot of MTs on this board who are not very happy about their current situation/job. Are there any MTs that are happy with their job?
I have been with the same company for over 6 years and have a steady paycheck, plenty of work, PTO time, and paid holidays. It is not what it used to be, but I can't complain. I recently have been switched to VR, but I have an easy account, and the pay is still good.

Are You All Happy Now? Apr 06, 2014Are you all happy now? Looks like the M*Modal coding students are gone. You seem to have been successful in driving them off.
Now when you want advice, you won't have to "wade through" anything because the board is again devoid of anything interesting.

I Anybody Happy???? Sep 15, 2014I left MT to work from Hertz at home in April where they hired 64 employees. The week after labor day, without any warning, they called all of us in and laid us off. They took the insurance the same day and gave us our sign on bonus that we had earned and a severance check, provided we signed a covenant not to sue...so it is not only Transcription companies that have no regard for their employees, it is most companies...So I ask myself...Is anybody truly happy with their jobs??? ...
