Happy MTs? - nm

Posted: Jan 07, 2014

I see a lot of MTs on this board who are not very happy about their current situation/job. Are there any MTs that are happy with their job? I have been with the same company for over 6 years and have a steady paycheck, plenty of work, PTO time, and paid holidays. It is not what it used to be, but I can't complain. I recently have been switched to VR, but I have an easy account, and the pay is still good.

I used to be happy... - sm

...and felt extremely lucky about having a job I've loved. That changed with the mass takeovers of MTSOs by megacorporations, who, in a nutshell, turned us into slaves for peanuts. In my opinion, the disrespect by cutting our pay (and not recognizing our intelligence and the difficulty of this job) is at the root of our unhappiness. Of course, I can only speak for myself, but I would bet I'm not alone in my opinion.

I use to love my job until pay dropped to more than $10,000 a yr. - I left I left MT for a better paying. sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Job and now I'm content and thankful. My drop in pay came from outsourcing; I only lasted with an MTSO 1yr before I left the field.

You are speaking for all of us NM - MTtoo

What company do you work for we'd like to know? - Depressed

[ In Reply To ..]
I've now worked for 3 companies over the years and they are ALL bad. I make less than minimum wage for my state now with NO benefits of any kind. At the end of my rope and at risk of losing my home.

Get. Out. Now. - Heading Out of MT

[ In Reply To ..]
It would be a guaranteed antidepressant!

I too would like to know the name of the company - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I bet we will not get it. I used to love being an MT, as well, but due to the worst companies (Lockhart Transcription, Pearson Transcription and Transportal...all trying to get out of paying me) I no longer love it. I have to find something legit to do at home, though, so am trying to go back to school (100% online) to do bookkeeping from home. Pray for me. lol

Where I work - Nm

[ In Reply To ..]
I work for a smaller company that has been around for over 25 years. I won't give you the name because it has been bashed on here over the last couple of years. The job isn't ideal but I make a decent income. I do my job and rarely hear from management and get paid with no problem.

I knew we would not get the name:( - nm

Nobody will give the name of a company - that isnt hiring just so you can pester them. SM
[ In Reply To ..]
If a company is NOT hiring, then what good does it do you to beg for the name of it?

Nobody's handing out names because the employers don't want to be deluged with resumes and calls if they're not hiring.

Also, as another post mentioned, employers don't want to be deluged with people who are not qualified when they do have an opening.

What's so difficult to understand about that?

I do not begin to understand where you... - none

are coming from. I just know that it is mean spirited. Maybe you should work on your people skills.

Still happy but holding my breath - sm - Almost retired

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm still very happy with my job. We almost got outsourced a year ago to Nuance but they backed off at the last minute. At the same time, I'm well aware of what's going on out there and know the subject is going to come up again sooner or later. This was the second time this has happened,at about 2-3 year intervals.
I'm an IC, and though I get no paid time off they pay me well (no raises in the last five years, though)and I thank my lucky stars I have this. I'm turning 62 in March but intend to hold off retiring as long as possible. I figure if we do get outsourced, I'll probably just retire and become a "granny for hire." It will kill me, though. I LOVE MT and can't imagine not being able to do it!

20 YEARS WITH MY CURRENT EMPLOYER - AND STILL VERY HAPPY

[ In Reply To ..]
Work 40 hours per week, salary over 22.00/hr, upgraded computer system, no weekends, 10 hrs ETO per pay period. Yes very happy. They are now introducing a lot of templates so that is an indicator that change is coming. Management is communicating with us about changes and my colleagues and I are preparing ourselves. In the interest of full disclosure I plan to retire in 2-3 years. No complaints here. This profession has served me well for 34 years. I am sorry for all the negativity others have experience but that has not been my experience.

really, I take offense to your YELLING to get noticed here. - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
slaughter me if you will. I have an opinion adn stated it. Moving on.

No slaughter just an apology - Did not mean to be offensive

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry you took it that way. I am very sorry.

Yeah, well move on and learn to spell "and" while you're at it... SM - Kitty

[ In Reply To ..]
Who is yelling at you, anyway? I have had occasion where my keyboard got stuck at all CAPS while I was actually working. I got permission from my supe at the time, and since it was a STAT report, typed it in caps. OK by you??? If it hurts your delicate eyeballs, don't look.

Up until 2011, I had 20 years with my great company UNTIL - CB

our major account, which my boss had had for 30 years, went with a cheaper offshore bid. We were all very happy at that company. We had flexible schedules (just minimum lines), no time clock, 5 weeks vacation + 3 paid holidays OFF, no nitpicky QA, standardized formats, headers and footers counted, and excellent VR at 6 cpl and 7 on the weekend. Though the doctors fought to keep us, they had no say. The worst part? The MTs (most there 15-30 years) ended up with only four weeks' notice to find new jobs. My boss chose to retire. It can happen that quick.

I thought I'd be there forever. Fortunately, I had five job offers within a couple of weeks and I was able to find a pretty good company. They subsequently got bought out by M*Modal. I worked there for about a year and a half, and I gave notice this week. I'm taking some time off to explore my options in non-MT work or maybe find another wonderful company like my original one (which I know is almost impossible). In 2011, I was still making about $55,000. Last year I made $25,000.

And the name of this magic company is... - nm

It is not an MTSO - It is a teaching medical center

Happy MTs - Are busy working

[ In Reply To ..]
The happy MTs are busy working - you will find that a majority of the posts on this site are very negative - I've come to the decision that "misery loves company" as far as this board is concerned. You want happy stories, talk to MTs not on this site.

I don't think that generalization can be made... - JMO...NM

[ In Reply To ..]
NM

I agree. Only I would have said "most" happy MTs dont post - here and I the reason why is

[ In Reply To ..]
Happy people and people that are still doing well have a tendency to get jumped on by the unhappy posters.
"most" happy MTs don't post here - I agree with you
[ In Reply To ..]
We are told to wait because our "unhappiness" is coming, or that we have no empathy for our fellow MTs who are unhappy. I never understand that attitude. If I am going through a divorce, I'm not upset because my friends have a wonderful marriage. I posted about being happy with my current employer and having been here for 20+ years and someone was upset because I was "YELLING." I was just HAPPY, so I just apologized to keep it moving. If you are not miserable and crying in your coffee, "most" MTs in this group will be happy for you. Misery really does like company.
If you were going through a divorce - would
[ In Reply To ..]
your happily married friends remind you how happy they are, thereby making you feel worse that you are now alone? Or would they be supportive, considerate of your feelings and not flaunt their happiness in your face? It's great that you're happy in your job and best wishes to you. No one begrudges you your happiness, just don't throw it in our faces when you know so many of us are struggling.

I'm happy - JustMe

[ In Reply To ..]
I work as an IC. I work from home so I'm here when my kids get home. It takes me about 4 hours to do my daily minimums. I make decent money, much more than I would at a lot of jobs outside the home. Sometimes I get very frustrated and annoyed, but overall I feel like it's a pretty cushy job and I'm glad to have it.

I should say though, I have only been doing this for about 3 years, so I wasn't around in the "glory" days.

I'm sometimes surprised by all the negativity on here. I think people's attitudes can play a big part in how well they do. If you have a crap attitude you are already setting yourself up for failure. Anyone who says anything positive gets downvoted into oblivion or called liars though, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it's the negative posts that dominate these boards.

Down vote away!!

I dont oay attention to the down votes; I speak my mind and keep - it moving SM

Happy Transcriptions Is Still Happy

Who in their right mind names a company "Happy Transcriptions?" In this day and age, all I see is "sad" MTs and, in my opinion, if "Happy Transcriptions" is still happy, they can only be messing even more with us poor "sad" MTs. All I can say is I am so "happy" I am so close to being on my way out of MT! ...

Happy At TTS
May 03, 2010

I've been at TTS for almost 3 years and I have nothing but positive things to say about TTS.  I never have to guess what TTS expects from me, and I do my best to deliver that on a consistent basis.  Communication flows freely and efficiently.  My team leader and 2 shift leads are EXCELLENT managers in my opinion.  Everything I invest in my job comes back to me and then some.  I can recommend TTS to anybody unapologetically. ...

Is Anyone Happy Being An MT
Oct 30, 2010

I am surprised at just how many or your are miserable with what you do.  I am a new MT ans I am also having trouble finding work.  It's not easy.  I can see that having editing to fall back on would be good.  I have read the posts about don't do this just to work from home.  I have small children and my only choice would be daycare if I went to work somewhere, which would eat up half my pay check.  Sometimes it's not just money, sometimes it's fo ...

Is Anyone Actually Happy With VR?
Jul 08, 2011

I've read tons and tons of negative complaints about VR, but are there people out there who actually like it? Any thoughts? ...

Any Happy MTs Out There???
Nov 28, 2011

Hi, everyone.   I was just wondering if there are any MTs out there that are happy with their jobs and are able to make some good money in this profession.  I have read lots and lots of posts, and it seems like a huge percentage of the posts are about how bad people's jobs are and how little money they are making.  I understand people need to vent, but there have to be some MTs that are happy and making money.  I recently graduated from one of the top MT schools and ...

Happy With Job
Nov 06, 2012

I understand how frustrated many people are with the way things are going with MT jobs.  I am not posting this to make anyone feel worse, but to let people know that there are some good jobs in MT.  I work for a private local medical office. I had been worried, too, as our office offered voice recognition to docs and some use it.  A lot got frustrated, mostly the ones who want their notes to be correct, and went back to using our services.  I had even been looking at online M ...

Anybody Happy?
Oct 20, 2013

I am wondering if there is a single person on this forum who is an MT who is happy with their job (including the miniscule pay that would be appropriate compensation if it were around 1975 rather than 2013 or lived in another country in which one can buy a lot more with 50 cents).
