Experience with split shifts? - see message

Posted: May 09, 2011

If you work split shifts, does it feel like you're working all day? Or do you find it works for you? TIA

VERY early morning, watch the birds wake up with the sun, - break for gardening or shopping midmorning,

work through midday, finish up in the early afternoon, and then have the rest of the afternoon and early evening to do what I want--also the rest of the evening when it's worth yawning the next day. Overall pretty nice for a morning person. I only break for a couple of hours, but that's long enough to feel like fun time to do a number of things, but short enough that I don't feel like I'm working all day. The down side in losing most of the evening is that I go to bed well before my husband, but yet another upside is that he has the TV to himself for his irritating laugh-track sitcoms and drag races. :) I haven't put up light-blocking drapes yet for the summer evenings yet, but they're on the list. Work flow downsides on this shift are that maybe 2/3 overflow from other shifts and very little of the surgery I like or other day work typically dictated promptly.

I love it. I go to work after lunch, break to relax for a couple hours get shopping done - dinner, then work into the night when no one calls me, interrupts me.

I love, love, love split shifts! It really preserves my energy. I work four hours in the (late) morning and three hours in the evening. The afternoon is mine to work, to run errands, to meet friends for lunch, etc. When I go to bed, I am not exhausted and the time during each half of the split shift seems to whiz by. Of course, I am older, and I do not have little children in the home, and that makes a difference. I do not think I could do it if I had little ones to mind. I went to split shifts about a year ago and it really revolutionized my life.

I loved the split shift. I worked in the wee hours (4 or 4:30 to 8 or 8:30 a.m.) Had the morning to take a little nap and do errands, doctors, etc. Then started back at 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Then time to cook dinner, eat and enjoy the rest of the night. I went to bed at 10 or 10:30 which was fine for me. If there was something on, I taped it and watched it the next day during my break time. Some people don't like splits because they feel they can't get motivated for the afternoon. But that never bothered me. Actually, it gave me a break to move to other daily activities and the afternoon seemed to go just as quick. Good luck if you can find a company that lets you do that. I thought nowadays, it was pretter much 1st, 2nd or 3rd no exceptions. But I could be mistaken.

I loved working split shifts. Got up early, worked 4 hours. Showered, ran errands or ate lunch, took a nap or walked. Then back on for 4 more hours. I had 4 hours during the day to do anything I wanted, but I'm an empty nester. I don't think I would have liked it when my baby bird was home.

and, yes, it felt like I was working all day.

It can really be a win-win, but it is hard long term. - Kicker

If you have some sort of odd situation at home where those hours work for you, go for it.

The downside I found was that I was always being asked to work AFTER those 4 hours were up, so it did indeed feel like I was working all darned day and I became very disgruntled. They see someone who is there for 4 hours, and they are actually working a solid 4 hours and not goofing around, and they may take advantage of that long-lost work ethic and want a little more from you each time.

Well, that's what I discovered anyway. I was even getting calls during that break to see if I could log in early and start in. That was the end of that shift for me and I was very relieved to go back to "just 8 hours" and getting it all over with in 1 stretch.

I think it is important for every MT to know how to set boundaries--and to be willing to do it and not afraid to do it. I do it when necessary.

Maybe so, but my work ethic saved my tuckas... - Kicker

Always being there when needed saved my job when over 50% of the people had to be let go due to a downturn. So, yeah, in these particular economic times, I will definitely prostitute myself out as long as they're payin for my fingering skills :-D
Work ethic's good. That point was addressed to - letting oneself be pushed well

beyond the point of acceptability, to the point of finally getting upset enough to refuse or quit. Letting a situation get to that point is not good for either party.

The absolute worst schedule I ever had was 9:00 am until 1:00 pm and then 8:00 pm until 12:00 midnight. I've worked a split divided other ways around when I needed to be available for my children and it worked great, but a morning shift then a night shift was miserable. In that scenario I did feel like I worked all day.

Split Jobs (from Below)
Nov 19, 2010

I had to listen to the new Split job instructions again because it had been so long since the tutorial and I had forgotten.  I didn't say it was "hard," but it had changed, and I had to refresh.  I don't throw jobs back, so had to go to MQ Central and find the tutorial again and listen about the "import" function and how to do it since you don't highlight and hide the text anymore.  It did take probably 15 minutes to find it and listen through the whole thing becaus ...

Why Only 2nd And 3rd Shifts Available
Feb 26, 2011

There are companies, which I know have outsourced a majority of work to India, that are seeking US MTs but only for 2nd and/or 3rd shifts.  Curious as to why seeing as how when it is 8:00 a.m. here (central) it is 7:00 p.m. in India and the rationale in sending all of our work to India is because companies supposedly couldn't find adequate coverage for 2nd and 3rd shifts here in the states, yet that is exactly what they are hiring for...no 1st shifts available, or very few, in the stat ...

Hours In Shifts
Mar 15, 2011

Have a question on shifts. Many of the jobs on the boards say 2nd or 3rd shift. In the MT world does that mean 3 to 11 p.m. and 11 to 7 a.m. or is it 4 p.m. to 12 and 12 to 8 a.m.? What's Up With 7cpl And 2nd And 3rd Shifts?!
Jan 03, 2015

I have noticed all these companies now are paying about 7cpl or 7.5 cpl and 3/3.5 for VR. I remember 12 years ago when I first started 7cpl was starting pay for right out of school. I eventually went up to almost 9cpl before transition to Nuance. Of course the pay went down after that and now once again. Back then 9-10cpl was seen and with MTs who had been doing it a while. Are these ads I see for 7cpl just for no experience? I see TTS does that. What if you have a lot of experience. I was makin ...
