one of the reasons a union will never work - mt2long

Posted: Feb 03, 2011

"I am looking for a transcription company that does SOAP notes preferably. I have 15 years of transcription experience and would like to do something part-time and weekends."

I read this today.  I considered it could be a bait post since not far under it is one equal eyebrow-raising.

But here's an MT who can say, "I have 15 years experience" and I would venture to guess, couldn't hold a candle to many of the newer and older acute-care MTs.

Years of experience really becomes meaningless, and experience is all too often like the word "happy", totally relative.

Just because an MT wants to work part-time, on a - specialized type of account, - sm

doesn't mean that the other 95% of hard-working, highly-trained, well-rounded, and UNDER-PAID MTs don't deserve and need an organization that speaks up for them.

When people like you put down another MT, you put us all down, yourself included.

Well said - sm

And what's wrong with SOAP notes anyway? She said she wanted to do those preferably; she didn't say that was the only thing she wanted to transcribe.

I didn't understand why this was a put down, although I didn't understand the heading about why a union would not work. My thought was that maybe this is an MT who already has a full-time job and wants something additional for extra income, or maybe a coder trying to maintain their skills. Apparently I'm missing something here.
SOAP lady's okay, but we can't unionize until most of the - slugs fall out. Successful unions work WITH

employers to arrive at agreements that work for both sides. People who can't/won't work well would undermine what union workers had to offer to the point that we couldn't reach mutually satisfactory agreements.
surely you mean can't unionize until you have the majority - that pipedream not going happen, nm

What are you trying to say? This post is really difficult to decipher! What does it have to do with unions?

Sorry, guess you guys can't read my mind, huh? What's up with that?

There's been lots of talk about unions (again). One of the factors about unionizing is that there is no real definition of what makes an MT.

So here's a person how just wants to do SOAP notes part-time and weekends, another who really wants to do radiology (both translate to my mind as easy work). This particular one says she has 15 years experience.

We see people on here all the time saying they don't get calls back but they have "15 (20, 30, etc) years experience. So if union comes in and says okay - we're organizing MTs and getting higher wages- how would that even look?

Someone with 15 years experience of SOAP notes (and let's just say for arguments sake that's the case here), is NOT equal (in my mind) to someone with 5 years experience who can do any kind of report you put in front of her/him.

Unions tend to lean towards favoring a seniority trend which would just not work in MT.

20 years in radiology is great, but in the world that MT is becoming, it may become next to useless because it's so specialized.

So my point was, 15 years doing easy work, does not, IMHO, make the same caliber of an MT doing 5 years of ALL the kinds of work.

I agree with you and I am 30 yrs lovin radiology. sm - mtmomma

I had a few years acute care before tripping over radiology, but the medical field changes so much and so fast....it was too long ago to be considered knowledgable anymore.

mt-ing is a continuing education with every new procedure, instrument, drug, contrast material, computerization and reasearch results you come across in the narriatives.

My Reasons For Dragging My Feet On 6.1.
Sep 15, 2010

have nothing to do with difficulty, upload/download time, or any MT-related issues. The majority of you STILL DON'T GET IT.  6.1. is an enhancement for back-end editing. Back-end editing means more automatiion and need for fewer and fewer real live human MTs to do MQ work. So great, jump on the bandwagon to eliminate your jobs.  I'm relatively confident I'll be one of the last to be let go whether I upgrade to 6.1 now or a month from now or whenever. You are just mak ...

Reasons For Discontent With Nuance
Jul 31, 2013

I know Nuance management watches this board carefully and know they are aware of issues we have, but wanted once again to put it in black and white.  Main issues are, in my humble opinion: 1.  Horrible health insurance.  Basically just major medical.  Makes me look forward to whatever Obamacare might offer.2.  Fiesa and QA/QC that make mountains out of molehills and seem to be intent on making us feel we are only worth the pittance we receive.3. The bonuses and difficul ...

TOP 10 REASONS TO DISLIKE NUANCE
May 20, 2014

1.  Low pay. 2.  Fiesa with no rhyme or reason for scores. 3. Too many managers/mini managers with rambling corporate speak emails. 4. Rambling client specifics on different accounts all subject to interpretation. 5.  Client specifics not uniform. 6.  Spark.  People you are told to contact are unavailable.  Lists should be alphabetized.   7.  Incompetent support staff. 8.  Bad VR which does not learn through correction.  Same mistakes over ...

Religious Reasons For Not Changing Your Hours, Can You Get UE?
Jan 29, 2013

It may be state to state also but let's say you had a religious reason for not working saturdays or sundays and they said to you "if you work sundays and saturdays you will have work" but you were not hired to work these dates as you stated when you were hired it was because of religious reasons, can you get unemployment? They are changing your schedule that you didn't sign up for, for a reason, religious objection. Just wondering. ...

UNION
Oct 16, 2014

Has anyone done research on clerical or MT unions? Any organizers or organizations you can suggest?  An internet search didn't yield anything, but I sent an email to a "service" union (closest I could find), haven't heard back.  All this industry has ever done is decrease pay under the guise of making compensation competitive, which is to say "If you'll work for X company for that little, we'll lower our pay too."  This job and the pride that came with it is a ...

Some Of You People Below Need A Union

Does Anyone Belong To A Union?
Sep 03, 2014

I am just wondering if anyone out there belongs to a union like SEIU? I know they mainly represent nurses and home health aides, etc., but I wonder if you joined it would that be of any benefit, would they be able to help with our working conditions, would you be able to elect their benefits rather than the MTSO ones? I am not interested in AHDI because basically it seems to provide absolutely NO job security or protection, no benefits to joining, and in fact your reward for obtaining their cer ...

Need To Start A Union
Oct 23, 2014

OK transcriptionists.......We are all in the same boat that seems to be sinking.  I am throwing everyone a life preserver.  I know I can offer the doctors out there an easy way to dictate that is "clear, understandable, personable" (with transcriptionists assigned to their own personalized physicians).  This is the way I have done this for 20 years.  It worked great.  I have a connection that will integrate transcription into the EMR that they are using.  When I spo ...

Do You Support Thoughts Of A Union?
Aug 23, 2010

If you do, what are your thoughts on CMT? In reading the thread going on right now, I see MTs saying it's worthless, it's a rip-off, etc.  But what do you think a union would really do? Any PROFESSIONAL organization SHOULD have standards and should have a MINIMUM certification.  Like it or not, AHDI is OUR organization and the CMT is what is being pushed as the MINIMUM standard.  Credentials do NOT guarantee higher pay.  They say you have met the minimum standards ...

Union For Medical Transcriptionists
Jul 11, 2011

I know this idea has been tossed around a lot but yet nothing has been done about it (to my knowledge - if someone knows different, please correct me). I am in agreement that we as transcriptionists need to band together so that we don't get treated unfairly and not paid what we are actually worth. I know there are many of us that have chosen medical transcription as our career and are still holding on and sticking through the changes. How do you go about creating a union for transcriptio ...

Medical Transcription Union
Oct 03, 2012

I have been doing a lot of thinking about this lately and I am just wondering, does anybody have any idea what we, MTs, would have to do to get a union started?  I have read the posts below about how much the big wigs in our company are making and how I have been working in this business for quite some time and instead of making more, I am making less.  I have never had a raise, but to get another job making maybe half a cent a line more than what I was making, only to lose that little incr ...

I Am On Board For The Union And Thank You For Getting The Info

What about India?  I have always been under the impression that we are a minority in this company, we being US MTs.  Won't Nuance just send all the work to India and be done with us?  I wonder if joining/forming a union would protect us from that... Just wanted to get discussion going about this.  Of course, they are sending the work overseas because it is cost-effective, and maybe I'm wrong, but I think we are in the very small minority and most of the work is done ...

Only A Union Can Call A Strike. Sm

We Desperately Need A UNION! I've Thought It For Years. SM
Mar 15, 2010

I was reading the posts below from the complainers complaining about the complainers, and I cannot believe there are so many deluded and ignorant MTs out there who believe that 3 cpl for VR and 8 cpl for transcription is a fair wage --- NO, not just a fair wage, they actually think it's something to sing about!
