group insurance - testing the water - makeitright

Posted: Sep 29, 2011

I am trying to get a handle on how many of you would be interested in group insurance coverage.  So many of the companies we work for dangle "benefits" in front of our noses only to find that joining them costs almost as much as buying it ourselves.  The IC's out there have no way to have coverage unless their marital partner carries them or the pay for it themselves.  I don't know about the coders/billers but include them in the "group".

I know it's been tried before and to form a qualified "group" we would have to have an "association" with officers, dues and all that sticky stuff - and the politics that will come along with it.  I say this just so you all know the negative side.

The positive side is that there are enough of us that if we banded together could be very attractive to health insurance companies.

Putting this together will not be an overnight thing but I'd really like to hear from you all if you are interested and if you have any available time to help in the research and development phase - phone calls, letters, and the very boring reading of insurance proposals/analysis.

I think that would be a great thing for us. If there were a great number, it might be a feasible premium. It would entail a representative that could do a company/large group type situation. It would be a lot of paperwork and then I might be on medicare by the time it was completed and the way we are going - no MT jobs anyway - sorry I was venting. If it were possible, I would be interested.

I agree it is a mountain of red tape and paperwork and research and coordination - probably why it has not been done. I think both MT stars and MT jobs at one point or another looked at trying to do a group coverage but to my knowledge, couldn't get anything to pan out.

I'll probably be on what's left of medicare by the time it would be completed too but there will still be people doing some king of MT as well as billers and coders.

With the economy the way it is, even the top five insurance companies are hurting and looking for solutions.

Day off on Sunday, think I'll research the top five or so, draft a cover letter of inquiry and once I hear back from all of them will try to post a comparison. I'll also try to post requirements of what we would need to form an association that would qualify for group coverage.

Group Medical Insurance For Transcriptionists?
Aug 17, 2010

I was wondering if there is group insurance anywhere for those of us who do this full time without benefits?  It seems that with insurance companies and strength in numbers, something should be available.  Anyone have any information on or experience with this?  I am recently certified with a few years experience and am looking to quit my crappy full time job that I am working only for the insurance to do this full time, but am hitting a wall with the insurance dilemma. ...

Doc Just Told Me To Hold My Water.
Feb 11, 2010

He started dictating an Op note and then got confused.  While trying to figure out what the heck he was doing, he said "hold your water." Maybe I'm just really bored today, or maybe my sense of humor is out of whack, but I started laughing hysterically at that! When the doc actually talks directly to me instead of just dictating (unless they are being a jerk) it's nice because you realize that he or she knows there is someone listening....even if they're telling you to ...

FedEx In Hot Water Because Of IC Status Crap!
Oct 21, 2009

I was laughing my butt off reading the news this morning because FedEx is in exactly the same kind of trouble that a lot of these MT companies should be in.  They have been classifying their drivers as IC status to "save money."   Sound like a familiar tactic?  Here's the article I cut and pasted: Tuesday, Oct 20, 2009 @04:01pm CDT   (New York, NY) -- Attorneys general from three states will file suit against FedEx for alleged labor laws violations. Officials fr ...

I have grave concerns regarding our profession.  Many of you do as well.  I am not normally one who dwells on this sort of thing, but I have seen our profession go from being able to support myself to a profession of hardly making it.  I have had to drop my health insurance in order to pay rent and utilities.  At my age, this is not a good thing at all.  I have scaled back on everything.  The only luxury I have is I rent 1 movie a week and then only very inexpensive ...

Oh Crap, Group Transcription, Now What?
May 05, 2011

My company just told me they were trying to bring on some projects where there would be multiple people speaking, like in a conference/meeting, about healthcare. They said they wanted me to transcribe it and to include time stamps every 5 minutes. How do you keep track of who is speaking? Sometimes trying to keep up with 1 mubbling doctor is hard enough, but now 5+ people? Is there some program or something I can get that will automatically put in timestamps, or am I going to have to keep lookin ...
