got an interview - maybe

Posted: Aug 04, 2014

for an ophthalmic scribe/technician position for Wednesday.  Fingers crossed it pays decently and I get it!!

Cool. Good luck! - nm

Are you in the FW Texas area? - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
If so, I can give you an estimate of the pay.

No unfortunately because - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
I would love to have an idea on what that would be.

$8.00 - an hour

[ In Reply To ..]
that's the going rate for "scribes" who simply follow the doc around and enter data...not actually transcribing. good luck!
I don't think - OP
[ In Reply To ..]
I would take it if offered if that's the case. It is combined with a technician position so maybe they will offer more. Otherwise no way I'd do it for that. That's insulting.
When the Scribe positions - started to become the norm
[ In Reply To ..]
that was the "going rate." Some may pay a bit more, but don't get your hopes up.

I'm the one who lives in the FW TX area. I work in an optometrist's office now (used to be an MT), and the ophthalmic scribes start at $9/hour with no experience and $10/hour with some experience (maybe having worked for an optometrist in the past). The optometric/contact lens technicians can make more, depending on their experience (and certification). You will have no problem with the scribe part once you get used to the software. However, being an optician can be very difficult. I had NO idea just how much knowledge those techs have. You have to fully understand all the different vision and medical insurance plans and understand the reimbursements. You have to learn all the different types of lenses and coatings. Again, I had NO idea there were so many different "extras" that can go on lenses. You also have to be very good at math. The first tech I worked with had four years' experience selling eyeglasses in Walmart. I didn't realize how many, many mathematical mistakes she made when charging patients until she quit and another one came aboard who had ten years' experience in a private optometrist's office. She is extremely intelligent and figures out the charges to the exact penny (I do the insurance, so this is of utmost importance to me). If you're going to be a contact lens tech, that won't be nearly as difficult as being an optician, in my opinion. There will still be a lot to learn with the different types of contacts, but not near as much as there is with the glasses. I wish you the best of luck! Please report back and let us know how you like it.
As a tech you would be trained to do a lot more and - gain more clinical experience which
[ In Reply To ..]
Can open up the door to more opportunities. Also take into consideration annual raises, benefits, vacation time/sick time etc. Most States minimum wage is above 8 dollars and taking into account you will also work as a tech, the likelihood of only making 8 dollars is totally unrealistic.

Good luck to you and I hope you get the job, if so please post an update.
Do a Google search for average scribe pay, I did and - One site said $10-$20. SM
[ In Reply To ..]
Another site gave an average of $12-$25. There are many resources on-line to refer to for salary info on many different types of jobs. Some websites will even provide average salaries for multiple states and cities.
Just Google "average salary for______" and go from there.
Those are inaccurate. Just look at what it says - an average salary for an MT is.
[ In Reply To ..]
Ads that I have seen for scribes have averaged about $10 an hour.
Every person must take the time to do their research - there are many reliable sites, just
[ In Reply To ..]
Take your time and read up on it or maybe rephrase the keywords in your search. The info is out there. If I didn't have to get some sleep I would take the time to search and post links, but it's 3am and I've already let my insomnia get the best of me. At any rate, wages vary from one location to the next, that and experience will typically factor in when wages are determined for new hires. So I have to disagree that there is only one set dollar amount paid to scribes or any other line of work.

When I started my new job almost 2 yrs ago as a medical assistant, I made $2 more than a couple other girls who had been there (the first one was there a year and the other 2 years). But because of my educational background and previous experience in patient care & phlebotomy before becoming an MT, all those things were factored into my hourly wage.

The job I'm currently doing pays as much as 50,000 a year in some areas of my state, but where I live I currently only make about 35,000. And that's for the exact same job title. I found that out by comparing wages/salaries (via the internet) with various health networks, large multispecialty clinics and hospitals within my state.

Granted I dont make 50,000 a year or even 40, but I love my job and the insurance is great, plus every October they give their employees a raise.
$8 an hr is not the going rate. Maybe where you live - but I have seen ads - see msg
[ In Reply To ..]
Ranging from $10 to $13 an hour in my area and various other locations. It all depends on where you live and where you work.
If you had read the post - correctly
[ In Reply To ..]
it had said "back when Scribes started to become the norm," and back then, approximately 2 years ago, the going rate WAS $8.00 an hour. yes, things have improved some since then, and yes, it does depend on where you live, but even still, $10-$15 an hour is not much of an increase. $10 an hour is barely a livable wage these days. There is talk in the govt sector about raising the minimum wage to over $10 an hour, but congress is fighting that too. In the state where I live, minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. That is poverty level wages. an MTs knowledge base is so much higher than that, and with even being a "tech" does not provide too much more in income. They just want it all and give nothing in return.
pay - OP
[ In Reply To ..]
I went to the interview today and they did ask when I expected pay wise. Apparently they are in the process of cross training and combining their scribes and technicians. It seems like the technical part is a lot of work ie performing tests etc. Besides the pay my only other issue is working full time outside the home. I'm not sure I want to do that. Currently I have one MD I do work at home for and a PT 20 hr/week in house job. I would take a really good hourly wage to draw me out. LOL It will be 2-3 weeks before I hear anything. I will post an update when I get one.
Performing the tests is easy - sm - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
You're really just pushing buttons on the machines and computers and telling the patients to look straight ahead and sit still. There's really nothing too technical about it. Trust me, the girl who does it at the office where I work is not educated and not all that bright, and she learned the testing within a day. If the job is for MDs rather than ODs, the pay will probably be better.
I beg to differ. Would rather make $15 an hour any day than 3-4 cpl - and the poor benefits MTSOs offer.
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm sure - you would
[ In Reply To ..]
but just because someone said the pay range would be between $10-15 an hour does not mean you are going to get that. if you notice in her last post, the OP said THEY asked her what she would expect in pay. THEY did not tell HER. If she requested too high an amount, she most likely did not get the job. If they cannot even tell you at a face-to-face interview what the pay is going to be, they probably aren't paying that much. We would all like to get $15 an hour these days, but most of the time, it just ain't gonna happen, and most likely not in this profession either. If you don't like 3-4 cpl and crappy benefits, get a different job somewhere else where there is at least a "chance" of making more. that's YOUR choice.
you may be right - OP
[ In Reply To ..]
They did ask and I told them and was not afraid to ask for what I wanted. I won't settle.
Now that's where you get me twisted - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
The thing about anonymous msg boards is people assume. I am a total stranger to you, but yet you assume I'm working for 3 or 4 cents a line. I left MT shortly after being outsourced and only stayed with the MTSO till I found another job. Even then I made 6 cpl for VR and refused to take their offer for anything less. Straight typing was 10, but irrelevant since 99% of the work was VR.

I honestly was not going to respond to your post because it sounded so foolish until I made it to the end and caught your back-handed insult. I was never one to work for an MTSO, I believe in hourly wages and guaranteed work. Had they offered me 3 or 4 cents a line I would have taken my severance pay and collected unemployment.

And before you go making another assumption, I didn't go back to MT. I left that line of work altogether so spare me the threats of going through another outsoure. And for the record, I make over $14 an hour with darn good benefits and my pay will increase every year. I'm in a much better place than I would have ever been if I continued with an MTSO. They don't even give raises and your lucky if you even have work.

And to say "what job asks what you expect for pay"...That's laughable. When is the last time you had an interview outside the MT world??

GOOD LUCK! - nm

As MTs, We Should Actually Interview The Companies!
Mar 03, 2010

If you are an MT with 10 or more years experience (actually a requirement with 1 company), and you are testing and interviewing, consider this.  When you do your research on a company that you are applying with, print all the negative posts such as "horrible platform, hardly ever any work, pay is slow, they offshored my account, VR problems, etc., etc."  If you score perfectly on your test and have good recommendations, land an actual interview, we should address these concer ...

Transcribing An Interview
