Interview - mt

Posted: Jan 26, 2015

Hello,

Does anyone have any helpful tips for me? I'm on my way to a job interview for transcription. I'm a former MT wanting to get back into it. I have experience, but haven't worked in the MT business for 1 year now. I do know I am the only person interviewing because the job isn't posted.

I have my updated resume, nice dress outfit, hair and nails groomed, and shoes polished.

Any helpful advice to calm my nerves? I really want this job.

Lots of people have allergies or the interviewer may find your perfume offensive. Other than that, you'll do fine. Just have confidence in yourself. I'm sure you haven't forgotten much in the last year. MT is kind of like riding a bike, I assume. Yes there are new medications and surgical instruments, etc., but you can learn these on the job if needed.

Haven't ever interviewed for one of these that I didn't get, but haven't appeared "in person" in a while-lol-mostly on-line stuff.

But, I would say to show interest in their "speciality" if they have one. Try to relate that to your experience, hopefully it does.

Do not buy into any criticism of anyone in MT or the business end of it, outsourcing or any of that. Look pleasant about whatever they present you, VR, straight transcription. If asked a preference, state it plainly without much emotion.

Express willingness to learn whatever system they present you with. If you have done this for a while, try to remember what systems you have used. Add a little evidence of knowledge of computer use and systems, but once again, not more than they do.

If this is a hospital, try to express some knowledge of JACHO requirements, politely, of course, don't appear smarter than the interviewer. Frankly, I wouldn't even appear to be on the same level. Massage their ego a bit.

Have reasonable explanation for being out of MT, but don't cut yourself down, don't give them excuses. Put it in the best light possible.

Don't get too dressy. It may outdo the people you are being interviewed by. Shouldn't make a difference, but it does to some.

If the job is in-house, dress as you would for the job.

Thank you to those who responded. I'm walking out the door now. I'll come back and let you know if I got the job or not.

...for others who may be interested in this question, I concur with no perfume or body sprays.

Definitely do not dress like you would if you were a manager, because it looks like you want to out-do and climb the ladder to a manager--who may very well be the person who is interviewing you. I recommend dressing a tiny hair above what your office attire might be---it's just safer, because you don't really know what their clothes policy is.

MT work generally calls for a casual-type outfit, so what I do is wear a very casual navy blue dress--kind of like a golf shirt, but long like a dress, just to the knees, and flat, close-toed shoes.

For an MT position in particular, long, gorgeous nails is not realistic, so I wouldn't go that route. Kind of looks like you don't want to get in the trenches. Short well-groomed nails, white, beige, light pink or clear polish.

And don't over-do the makeup. You're not going for a modeling position or a beauty pageant.

And I would be honest about why you left MT, whatever it might be, without cutting down the job, ASR, or anything like that. I personally would be honest if you lost your job to off-shoring. Kind of gives them a heads up that if they want you, they'll watch their step in terms of offshoring their work.

Be confident - deb

As MTs, We Should Actually Interview The Companies!
Mar 03, 2010

If you are an MT with 10 or more years experience (actually a requirement with 1 company), and you are testing and interviewing, consider this.  When you do your research on a company that you are applying with, print all the negative posts such as "horrible platform, hardly ever any work, pay is slow, they offshored my account, VR problems, etc., etc."  If you score perfectly on your test and have good recommendations, land an actual interview, we should address these concer ...

FutureNet Interview

Hi group!  I have a job interview with Rita at Futurenet tomorrow.  The reason I am looking is I am really tired of constantly running out of work because my company over hired and now we transcriptionists are just out of luck!  I am in my 4th year with my current job and suddenly can barely hit $100 a day.  This is really sad when there is no loyalty to their employees.  Now from what I have been reading Futurenet is the same???  I read from this group how they run ...

Transcribing An Interview
Jul 14, 2010

I am doing some side work transcribing a research interview, and was wondering your opinions.  One of the respondents in the interview panel is ESL.  Her grammar is very often incorrect.  I asked them when I got the project if they wanted the transcription verbatim, and she said "yes, let's leave it true to form."  I had asked because the previous work had a lot of "like" and "you know" in it, and transcribing every utterance was actually really hard.  ...
