difficulty working with too many interruptions... - blondie

Posted: Aug 18, 2010

My mother will know I am working, will walk in my office and see me working and come in and ask me something.  She comes over periodically to check on my 12-year-old son after he has come home from school to see if he would like her to fix him something to eat, etc.  She lives next door.  Anyways, my mother is the best mother in the world, would do anything for me or my husband or son.  It is just she isn't married anymore and gets bored.  When she comes in my office to ask a question she has gotten to where she will linger and sit down and ask questions and I have to stop and answer her or she will start a conversation.  I don't want to hurt her feelings as she is tender hearted.  But somethings got to give.  I have a very good husband who never disturbs me when he is home and I am working.  If he does it is a quick question and he's gone.  No lingering.  No conversating.  My cousin is a transcriptionist too and had the same problem with her mom when she moved back home for a little while after a divorce.  She said her mom was constantly coming in there talking to her.  She said she couldn't hardly get anything done.  I am at that point now.  I don't know how to remedy this without hurting feelings.  Should i Just continue typing and try to ignore her?  I don't know.  It is so irritating.

how to succeed in transcription - even with a chatty neighbor

Somehow you need to tap into her "Mama protective side," so that she will think, "Daughter is working, I must be careful not to disturb her." Like when you were little and she tip-toed around while you were taking a nap. Make it feel like part of her maternal responsibility. :) Otherwise she might feel like you are bored or need a break. I've always had better success with making the OTHER person realize their responsibility for helping me work, than just giving them the cold shoulder. That stresses everyone out.

Some time when you are NOT working, ask mom to sit down for a chat. Let her know you love that she's so close and able to pop in and you love seeing her, but that when you're working, you need to keep interruptions to a bare minimum. Perhaps you and she could set up a time in the day when it's a good time for both of you just to chit chat.

My MIL used to call it "that typing stuff" and consider me NOT working since I was home, so I get your problem.

Another thing would be to schedule a break every couple of hours and if mom comes in for something, ask her if it can wait until you're on break.

It takes some time, but you can get them "trained."

Remedy: Lock on the front door. Disable the doorbell. - But seriously, just have a frank talk with her. (

proficiency report that comes out each week. We are graded on a variety of things, one of which is how long it takes us to edit a job. The faster you can get through the job, the higher your score will be. (Off topic for a minute: I find this unnecessary as obviously I am going to be as proficient and quick as I can because my pay has been cut almost in half and I work to survive, not for "extra" money to play with). In any case, I explained this to my family. I told them that when I am interrupted, I am going be graded down and that is a "very bad" thing. :) They understood that, and they try very hard to not interrupt me. Maybe you could explain it to your Mom that way, and she will feel some responsibility in making sure her "baby" does not get a "bad" grade.

You think that's bad.........My mother - Kiki

as much as I love her to death, has some "memory problems" -- probably creeping towards Alzheimer's.....Her long-term memory is fine but her short-term is GONE. I have had to move in with her to make sure her bills are paid, etc. She will come in an interrupt me with a question....and I'll nicely answer her and then tell her to please wait until I take a break to interrupt me. She will say, "oh, yes, I'm sorry" and then FIVE minutes later will come back with the same question. I obviously cannot get mad; it's not her fault, but my production is starting to take a hit. Anyone have any suggests for this situation?

As for YOUR mom, I'd get a sign that says Working (with a happy face drawn on it) and tell her you are going to hang it on your down when you need absolutely no interruptions. Tell her your production will go down, hence, your pay, if she interrupts while you are working......

My situation is similar, blondie... - cindyoh

...though Mom and I aren't living together yet. Not yet diagnosed with Alzheimer's just yet but definitely serious dementia problems that will worsen. Was wondering if I'd have what you have if we end up living together. She's close by and I figured it would be easier on me to have her in the same house eventually, when the time comes if I can get her to agree with it; she's in total denial. Right now it's repeated phone calls when I start working on second shift. Anyway, not much advice here but nice to see somebody else with a Mom like mine, ha-ha. I can spend an incredible amount of time with her when not working and she forgets all that. Frustrating, huh?

Interruptions
Apr 08, 2011

I was just curious as to how you handle interruptions while you are working.  My friends and family cannot understand that I work on production.  For example, just today, since I started my shift, I have had 9 phone calls and texts and then my mother-in-law just dropped by to visit for a while.  I have tried to not be rude but I don't know what else to do.  I just yelled at my husband because he called and when I answered, he said "What are you doing?"  LOL (Th ...

Too Many Interruptions
Mar 05, 2015

They want each job to be perfect (as do I), but the interrupting E-mails are getting ridiculous.  Between the HDSM and the WFTL, they never stop bugging you for OT and of course you must respond to all their E-mails for OT.  It is hard to keep your concentration focused on the job at hand with all these useless interruptions.  ...and yes, I could just close out the e-mail folder, but I need it open to check all the millions of e-mails about all the individual hospitals.  ...

Transcription Job Difficulty

I'm a transcriptionist/editor with 23 years' experience working at home for various companies and in hospitals.  I have had a hard time getting a new job lately.  I have been applying to all the jobs on the job seeker's board for the past 3 weeks and have only gotten 2 replies, to do further testing.  I've heard nothing else.  With my skill level and experience, I can't imagine why I would not pass the testing.  I'm wondering if anyone ...

US MT Working Outside Of The US
Nov 12, 2010

I have an odd question.  If a US trained Medical Transcriptionist works from home (in the U.S.), but then decides to spend 1/2 the year (or more) in a foreign country, is it possible (ethical/legal) to continue working as an MT while in that country?  The MT would keep the US address, and bank account.  All paychecks would continue to be direct deposited into current U.S. bank account.  MT would continue to pay U.S. taxes on all monies earned.  Does anyone see anyt ...
