chair suggestions? - anon

Posted: May 16, 2014

Does anyone have some suggestions for a good quality office chair, an ergonomic model in particular which focuses on support for the lower back? I've been able to get away with relatively cheap ones for over a decade, but after a back injury last year, the cheap ones are killing me. I've tried back rests and cushions with no relief. I've looked at some floor models in supply stores and online reviews, but can't tell which one would make a difference. I'd appreciate any suggestions before spending precious money to continue in a job that is taking a big toll on the body. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

After trying all kinds of chairs, even expensive ones from the office store, I have found that the cheap 2" thick gel cushion has helped me the most.

Herman Miller or Steelcase Leap - love my chair

I bought a Steelcase Leap that had a nifty adjustable lumbar support. The seat also adjusts forward and back. Unfortunately, the lumbar did not go low enough for my small frame, so I took it back and exchanged it for a Herman Miller Mirra. These chairs are not cheap! But I found a used one at a local used office supply store and got a good deal. I've had this chair for just a few months now and I don't know how I ever did this job without it. Within days after getting it, my back pain was totally gone! It has adjustable lumbar support that goes low enough for me. It has a mesh seat, so there will never be a problem with foam that flattens out. I checked the manufacture date on this chair, and it is 10 years old. I don't think you'll find a foam seat that will last that long.

Herman Miller has another chair (Aero) that comes in three different sizes, but it is more expensive than the Mirra. I sat in one at the store where I bought the Mirra but actually liked the Mirra better. So it's more a matter of personal preference (and budget).

If cost is an issue, you might be able to find a good deal on a used one online, but I would recommend calling the used office supply stores in your area to see if you can find one so you can sit in them and try them out. I was fortunate that they were willing to exchange the Steelcase for the Mirra (the Mirra did cost a little more than the Steelcase chair).

Good luck! I hope you can find a good deal. You won't regret getting any one of these chairs I've mentioned!

I swear by those chairs. My facility buys them for us because they are so good.

The seat is mesh, so you never need a cushion. It also moves with you as you move, helping you maintain a better posture without getting stiff. The lumbar support is good, too, and the chair is highly adjustable.

They come in sizes, so be sure to get the right one.

Look them up online. They are nothing like other chairs, including so-called "ergonomic" chairs.

Have whoever treated - you for your back

request an ergonomic workplace assessment through occupational therapy and see if there is any way to have the insurance carrier who paid for treatment as a result of the accident pay for the assessment and the chair. Would it be possible for you to do that? Even though it may be a tax write-off at the end of the year, it would save you the out of pocket expense now. They often consider other things that contribute that we often would not think have an impact.

About 3 years ago went to Office Depot and got a chair called Quantum Back Mesh Mid Back Chair SKU #510-830. On the tag it was rated for 5-plus hours per day of sitting -- that's probably something to watch for, in office chairs. I sat in it, and it was very comfortable and had many adjustment knobs/levers so I could get the chair just right. Cost was about $200 but worth it. I like it a lot. I do sometimes still use a small pillow wedged against my lower back, though, since I'm such a sloucher.

Need A New Chair
Feb 05, 2011

The cushion is completely flattened from my big rear end, and now I can't sit for more than a hour without the numb-butt feeling.  I'm looking for a good chair but, of course, I'm on an MT salary, so I can't pay top dollar.  I'm thinking about $150 or so.  Any ideas? ...

Transcriptioin Chair
Aug 16, 2010

I'm looking for a good transcription chair.  When we started working from home I asked to take my chair and told I could not.  I even offered to buy it from them but still could not get it.  I want one that adjusts in height and has arms that move in or out as well as up and down.  The chair at the hospital was over a $400.00 chair and it was so comfortable.  If anyone knows of a good place to purchase one of these over the internet please let me know.   &nbs ...

Can anybody recommend a good chair? I am petite, 5 feet 6 inches but small and need cushioning. Body Built Chair
Feb 24, 2010

I wanted to share my chair info with every MT.  I recently read about the Body Built Chair and decided to check it out.  I did finally purchase the chair after much hesitation because it cost so much.  I love the chair so much!  I am so pleased I purchased it.  They do have a 30 day return policy.  I was having pain and discomfort in my lower back, my legs,  my butt, every where it seems after years of transcribing.  I have purchased several chairs.  ...

Does Anyone Out There Use A Balance Ball Chair
Mar 24, 2011

I'm trying to use just my balance ball right now.  I have some low back problems and find that my posture is horrendous with sitting in a normal office chair; however, just the balance ball alone seems to be a little too low.  Overall, it feels more comfortable on my rear end than my normal office chair and I'm definitely sitting up straighter, but wondered if anyone else out there had any experiences, good or bad, with using a balance ball or the balance ball chair setup.&nb ...

Need To Vent (computer Chair Related)
Apr 27, 2011

My computer chair tore up, so I needed to get a new one. I tried some out at the store and got a cushy one. After I put it together and sat in it for 30 minutes, I had severe pain. It felt like my whole body went numb and tingly. So I had to take it back. I got a second chair and can tell it's not going to be comfortable and that I will need to take it back. I'm sick, tired, and frustrated about this. Not at the stores or the people that work there, because it's not their fault ( ...

Hello everyone.  I am another one of those lower Alabama MT's.  I really need some pointers on what to do here.  When I started transcribing a few years back, my mentor told me once I got the grip, that I needed to consider getting my own accounts and eliminate the middle man and I would do so much better.  Well.....easier said that done!!
