What's up in this childish new world? - Daylo

Posted: Nov 18, 2010

Am I missing something?  What happened in the world we live in now?  It is as if something has gone terribly awry almost overnight.  It must have changed when I wasn't looking...

I made a cold call to a pain clinic in a nearby town.  I asked if I might send my resume via e-mail and was told "We don't like to give out our e-mail address."  I was asked if I might mail it via snail mail to the attention of their office manner.  I was told her name was "Shelly"  and I asked if I might have her last name as well, and was told, "You don't need to know that."  Honestly, I am incredulous and unfortunately must have shown my disdain when I replied that this was a business document I was going to send.  My mouth ajar, I hung up the phone and swore I would never work in a place like that.

Who's wrong?

Her. It's not like you were asking for her SSN, DOB, and a DNA sample. Sheesh. - Shirl

A pain clinic, huh? - I would add this

People employed at pain clinics may also be super-alert about drug-seeking behavior from their clients/patients. For this reason, they may be a little more cautious than most medical practices.

No-fault - LMJ

It was a pain clinic. They are often targets for break-ins, including the people who work there. I think they were right in not offering that information to someone who was "supposedly" a business person. (Not that you aren't, just that they could not be sure of that.)

So perhaps her delivery could have been different, but they do have to be careful due to the world we are living in now.

I got an e-mail from a recruiting company in Oklahoma, stating they would like to interview/test me for a company that I applied to. They didn't give the company name. They asked that I call them. I have called 6 times, left a VM and e-mailed and thye have never returned my calls or e-mail. Gee, why did you contact me in the first place? Just plain rude. Perhaps you wouldn't want to work at a place like that anyway. Just sayin!

A lot of places do not give last names of their - sm

employees, mainly for protection in this crazy world. Anymore, name tags don't have last names, only first names. Personally, I wouldn't think anything about it, and send my resume anyway. The cover letter can be to the attention of Shelly.

Guess some of it is just generational? - Daylo

[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks to everyone for your replies. I guess some of this is just a generational gap thing.

In the world I grew up in, we addressed our elders with respect and our business letters by the complete name. We actually did not care if anyone knew we worked for a reputable organization. It kind of sounds like there is something fishy going on, or you are not proud to be affiliated with this organziation/facility?

I still consider it a rude reply and totally off the wall in my opinion. "You don't need to know that." could have been changed to, "I am sorry, but we do not give out employees last names." That would have been more appropriate in my humble opinion.

Also, I think that in the long run, if you have a business, giving out your e-mail address could certainly be beneficial to your business. Otherwise, who writes you? Get an e-mail address and don't give it out, you only get spam. It seems rather odd if you ask me.

I can also see the points made by others on here though.

The way business is done nowadays just kind of make me feel like I am living in a parallel world.

There are some uptight folks in the world... - anonymouse

[ In Reply To ..]
There are some uptight folks, and it sounds like you had the pleasure of dealing with one. :) I guess that call let you know you didn't wanna send your resume there.

my own doctor's office wouldn't give me an email or a fax number - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I couldn't have either a fax number or an email because they claimed patients "abused" them. I wonder what they think abuse is? At any rate, maybe the clinic you called had people abusing email.

Not that I agree with it, though. I know they're busy, but punishing all of us because a few people "abuse" the fax number is childish.

Well, fight fire with fire. - Daylo

[ In Reply To ..]
I suppose you could just be honest and find another doctor and tell them that if they don't trust you with their fax/e-mail addresses, you can't trust them with your life.

Sounds like a good plan to me. :)

We wouldn't at the doctor's office I worked at - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The only email we kept was the doctor's. These days most people know how to use email, and that is a huge liability as the patient's could start emailing medical questions, etc. If you offer your email address at a doctor's office, you have to have someone there checking regularly and answering the messages. Not to mention that they don't need another forward in their inbox.

As for the last name thing, I would not have given mine out for a cold call. That is just odd. Why would anyone need to know that information. To an insurance company, yes. Certain patient's, yes. Cold calls for transcription, definitely not, nor would I ask for it.

I think you are. - sm

They obviously are not interested in your business. You're not entitled to that private information.

Just move on. Besides, you said you wouldn't want to work at a place like that...that keeps it private info private? LOL

Morning all. Knew it was coming, just didn't know when.  CTL gone Monday and this a.m., a totally new CCM.  Haven't been told anything by anyone at MQ about any of this.  Just happened.  It's OK.  The last CCM was pretty bad, never answered E.mails or phone calls.  The CTL was great though and that is probably why she is gone.  MQ can't stand to have anyone good for morale and/or MTs work for them.  Look out everyone, its Christmas ...

Brand New World
Jan 11, 2010

Yesterday (Sun) was a nightmare. I was struggling to get jobs all day long (see posts below). There were very few last night even, when there are normally an abundance of jobs. I was bouncing all over the place; it was like the cesspool all over again. Look at the backlog this morning; only 400 jobs company wide at 8 EST? I think whatever upgrade they did yesterday morning just sucked more accounts to our ILPs. ...

On my every-other-month audit by my QTL I lost points for expanding Clostridium difficule, but SHE wanted me to put (I kid you not) C Diff. Please don't tell me those idiot biddies at AHDI have changed the "rules" on us again.  I also make money typing papers for professional journals, and I really HATE dumbing myself down for MQ. and...I'm still getting broken jobs with terms like ...

There Is Justice In This World!
Jul 11, 2010

After I was terminated by Transcend, I thought my world had come crashing down on me, and I picked up the pieces and started to look for work.  In the meantime, I filed for unemployment, never thinking I had 1 chance to gain that at all.  My judgment came in from the review board in the State of FL., and they determined that there was no fault found on my part when the company terminated me, and that I had carried out my duties, as described in my job description, with no intent on my ...

I'm lucky enough to have one of the few remaining MT/E jobs that is NOT an MTSO (albeit not for much longer). I've been reading here for quite a while, including the General, M*Modal, and Nuance boards. It seems as if nearly everyone, everywhere has seen their work dry up in the extreme.  At Nuance and M*Modal, of course, they reckon it's because it's all going to India, and all things considered, they're undoubtedly right, at least in part. However, it doesn ...

So I just moved into a larger place which allows for my very own dedicated office.  Not huge, about 14 x 14, yet I find myself totally clueless on ideas for how to decorate it.  I'll be the only one using it so I pretty much have free rein over how to fix it up. Hopefully Good News For The MT World!!
Mar 31, 2011

So I was at a local clinic today that had switched over to a dropdown menu system and templates for their doctors a couple years ago and had laid off their transcriptionists and the doctor was just typing away in his template and of course I had to mention how as a medical transcriptionist this really bothered me.  He told me that many of the doctors there were unhappy with the new system and had gone back to dictating and that they were more than likely going to be hiring transcriptionists ...

How In The World Do I Figure How To Charge?
Dec 05, 2011

Hi! I have been a transcriptionist for over 15 years.  I have only worked in a hospital and from home.  The home  job had been ELIMINATED, so I have not transcribed in about a year and a half.  I have never had to figure my lines as the hptl or powers that be have always just magically issued a paycheck.  Recently I was offered a PT job typing for a local clinic and I need work so of course I accepted and offered 8 cents a line.  I know a line is based on a 65-char ...

Nov 29, 2012

So many of us have been "gobbled" up by Nuance in the last few years. So many of us are transcriptionists with specialized, honed skills, and those skills are valuable. Do not be deceived by a company who devalues your worth and causes self-doubt and continues to tout itself as the leader in the industry. I believe there are many facilities, doctors, clinics, etc, who do not want their work run through a computer to be deciphered. It may be time-consuming and seem like a fruitful task, but if yo ...

If American MTs Get QCd To Death, How In The World
Aug 03, 2013

are MTs from India doing well? I was born and raised in the U.S., I was an English/writing major, and I'm QCd into the ground, which makes me wonder - how the heck are people from India and other countries doing as MTs? What is going on here, seriously? ...

Am I Being Pecked To Death Or Do I Need To Leave The MT World?
Dec 09, 2009

I am beginning to think that everything I know is absolutely wrong!  I failed my audit, which is only the 2nd time in my 12 years here that I actually had an audit. I am being marked wrong for things like eponyms, which in BOS 2 is acceptable to use, but preferred to drop the 's, but is still acceptable.  Also, for not numbering the diagnosis section even thought it was dictated in paragraph form.
