Your Little Corner of the World - Clueless

Posted: Mar 07, 2013

So I just moved into a larger place which allows for my very own dedicated office.  Not huge, about 14 x 14, yet I find myself totally clueless on ideas for how to decorate it.  I'll be the only one using it so I pretty much have free rein over how to fix it up.

Would anyone like to share pics of their home office and pics of office equipment (computer tables, bookcases, etc) that you have or how you have fixed up your own home office?  Maybe I can find some inspiration.

We MTs spend SOOOOOO much time in our own little corner of the world working I'd like to make my office as attractive as possible and someplace I really enjoy being while working all these long tedious hours.

TIA!

Good for you that you have your own "corner of the world." As I have moved several times, each one was different, but I have 2 favorites. I used to have a wrap-around desk/credenza. My room was about the size of yours. My second one needed to be painted, so I did that first with the help of a friend. It faced west and had a west window. It did not have window blinds but did have shades and pinch-pleated drapes. My desk was natural oak and I had also purchased a matching book case when I purchased the furniture. That really was the only furniture in the room.

I put the desk smack in the middle of the room with the bookcase with my personal books in the side corner. I re-arranged the books differently. Some where up-and-down and others were stacked. That way, it made more room on the shelves for smaller pictures of my family. I went to the dollar store and bought somewhat matching frames - not all totally alike but the colors blended. I framed small pictures, fun pictures of my mother and daughter and put them in the bookcase. Since I had a wrap-around credenza, there were a few shelves underneath for medical reference books so they were handy.

I used to do needlepoint as a hobby and I hung my framed needlespoints on the wall along with larger pics of my mom and daughter. I live in FL but they were in Ohio so they were always in my thoughts as my daughter wanted to go back to Ohio to finish college and she lived with my mother. I purchased a tiny TV at the thrift store - not because I watched TV when I was working - I just like the background noise and cable TV had a music package and I could also play soft music via TV or catch the weather report while I was taking a break.

I also love panda bears and had a few panda prints and hung those on the walls. I found a panda plantar at the flea marker and the lady made me up a plant of (whatever pandas eat - can't remember) and had that on my desk. Someone I used to date had given me a stuffed panda bear for my birthday (even though I am a grown woman,) but yes, that had to go in another corner and I bought a large plant at the flea market that sat by the western window that only needed bright light. Wow - that was it! I was surrounded by everything I loved in "my little corner of the world." P.S.: I did make room on the credenza for my cat, Bailey, as he followed me to my office every day and slept on my desk every hour of my working day. Had to keep his head from going to sleep on my keyboard because if I went to the bathroom I would come back and Bailey had fallen asleep and his sleepy ears would have typed out XXXQQQQQ!!!!!!!. etc. But then, that was his little corner of the world as well. Good decorating to you!!!!

Lucky Girl! - What I Did

I finally got my own office in our house. It's beautiful, with all windows surrounding with a panoramic view of a lovely lake.

However, when I didn't have that view, I got a huge print mural of a Caribbean beach and palm trees and placed it on on a wall to the side of me. You may prefer a field of flowers, a fall woods scene, a farm. It's all your personal preference.

Even though I have my lovely for-real view of a lake, I still decorated. One of my walls has a Southwestern wall hanging in a turgoise blue and white. Another wall has a small mirror with a pretty turquoise silk flower frame that matches the hanging. And I love my Stedman's books, as they add a lot of color. I bought them years ago before the Internet was everything, but I kept them because they add color and are still actually useful!

My desk is small, but I have a top shelf where I have a pretty candle, a stuffed little teddy bear and some other doo-dads. My actual desk where my monitor sits has a very pretty little flowered desk clock and not much else, because I don't want a lot of clutter in my immediate area.

I have always had a small bulletin board on the wall directly behind my monitor for little notes about accounts, days my supe is on vacation, a calendar, things like that. I have always used colored thumb tacks or pegs just to make it look prettier and used pretty scrap paper for the notes.

Just little things can mean a lot when you spend a good chunk of your day in there!

My office has good lighting because of all the windows, but if it didn't, I would personally buy a pretty overhead desk lamp. They're not expensive.

Enjoy your space! It's all yours! Light a scented candle!

I'm not that great with decorating - like the above posters,

but 2 things I really like in my office are a 5 gallon self-contained fish tank and 2 cat beds on either side of my desk. The fish tank is soothing and the cats (when they decide to come join me) enhance my well being.

Something else you might do before decorating is look up a few feng shui tips on line to get some ideas on positioning, materials, colors, etc. since you get to start from scratch. With this job you will want to get the most calming, productive atmosphere possible, LOL!

me either - but my must-haves

[ In Reply To ..]
my must-haves are my little desk lamp, my space heater, and my gallon jug of drinking water.

I'm so fortunate thate my office has a door that leads outside and it's usually open unless it's absolutely freezing out there, so a screen door is another must-have for me, to keep flies out. Last year I tried that magic thing with the magnets. It doesn't work as well as they show on TV, but it did okay and allowed the dog to run in and out.

whatever - Lucy

Whatever makes you happy is the important thing. It is your own space and whatever makes you comfortable is all that is important.

New World
Dec 03, 2009

Morning all. Knew it was coming, just didn't know when.  CTL gone Monday and this a.m., a totally new CCM.  Haven't been told anything by anyone at MQ about any of this.  Just happened.  It's OK.  The last CCM was pretty bad, never answered E.mails or phone calls.  The CTL was great though and that is probably why she is gone.  MQ can't stand to have anyone good for morale and/or MTs work for them.  Look out everyone, its Christmas ...

Brand New World
Jan 11, 2010

Yesterday (Sun) was a nightmare. I was struggling to get jobs all day long (see posts below). There were very few last night even, when there are normally an abundance of jobs. I was bouncing all over the place; it was like the cesspool all over again. Look at the backlog this morning; only 400 jobs company wide at 8 EST? I think whatever upgrade they did yesterday morning just sucked more accounts to our ILPs. ...

There Is Justice In This World!

After I was terminated by Transcend, I thought my world had come crashing down on me, and I picked up the pieces and started to look for work.  In the meantime, I filed for unemployment, never thinking I had 1 chance to gain that at all.  My judgment came in from the review board in the State of FL., and they determined that there was no fault found on my part when the company terminated me, and that I had carried out my duties, as described in my job description, with no intent on my ...

I'm lucky enough to have one of the few remaining MT/E jobs that is NOT an MTSO (albeit not for much longer). It seems as if nearly everyone, everywhere has seen their work dry up in the extreme.  At Nuance and M*Modal, of course, they reckon it's because it's all going to India, and all things considered, they're undoubtedly right, at least in part. However, it doesn ...

Hopefully Good News For The MT World!!

So I was at a local clinic today that had switched over to a dropdown menu system and templates for their doctors a couple years ago and had laid off their transcriptionists and the doctor was just typing away in his template and of course I had to mention how as a medical transcriptionist this really bothered me.  He told me that many of the doctors there were unhappy with the new system and had gone back to dictating and that they were more than likely going to be hiring transcriptionists ...

How In The World Do I Figure How To Charge?

Hi! I have been a transcriptionist for over 15 years.  I have only worked in a hospital and from home.  The home  job had been ELIMINATED, so I have not transcribed in about a year and a half.  I have never had to figure my lines as the hptl or powers that be have always just magically issued a paycheck.  Recently I was offered a PT job typing for a local clinic and I need work so of course I accepted and offered 8 cents a line.  I know a line is based on a 65-char ...

So many of us have been "gobbled" up by Nuance in the last few years. So many of us are transcriptionists with specialized, honed skills, and those skills are valuable. Do not be deceived by a company who devalues your worth and causes self-doubt and continues to tout itself as the leader in the industry. I believe there are many facilities, doctors, clinics, etc, who do not want their work run through a computer to be deciphered. It may be time-consuming and seem like a fruitful task, but if yo ...

If American MTs Get QCd To Death, How In The World
