Beware: If you are thinking about becoming a Medical Transcriptionist ask yourself these questions first - Do I like working every weekend and Holiday? Do I like working more than 80 hours a week to just barely make more than $10/Hr.? Do I like having to worry about losing my job in a year or two to a computer? If your answer to any of these questions is no, than you might want to reconsider becoming a Medical Transcriptionist. The perk of working at home has lost it's appeal because of the above and because of our wonderfully advancing technology, is slowly making the MT obsolete.

all the "Jean" posts below. Someone who gave advice to stay away from the MT world just could not understand why nobody was listening to HER advice. Get over it already. Actually the thread in it's entirety is kinda funny, as it is all so predictable. Of course, I work 16 hours a day now so I admit to being slightly loopy.

I agree with the OP, in that going into MT is rather an insane job choice at this point. If you aren't already in the great bog, don't jump in and drown with the rest of us.

Happy New Year to all who are covered in muck and treading the murky waters and hoping that this "lovely" job we all share does not get even worse.

It might be the OP's experience, but the OP doesn't speak for everyone. There are still 10s of thousands of MTs in America, and most are not going through what the OP described.

Obviously we can't give "real" numbers but there are some facts we all have access to and the paramount fact is wages have gone down dramatically in the last 5 years industry wide.

We all know VR is absolutely NOT what it was cracked up to be. Our brains are wired to "fill in the blanks" and make assumptions of what words are, especially when speed reading, which is what we must do at 4 cpl (yes, I know we don't all make 4 cpl but it is certainly the norm now).

So I think it is pretty safe for any one of us to say a big chunk of MTs in this country find themselves working for one of the MTSOs who pay 4 cpl to everyone regardless of experience.

The OP didn't even go on a rant, she really just stated the facts of the current state of the industry. I related to 100% of her post.

There is a lot of work available and for great pay. You just have to put forth the effort. Every transcriptionist I know is still making a lot of money and has a lot of work on their desks.

I recently responded to an ad on Craig's List for an MT medical editor because I'm interested in getting into that. I got a test and a bunch of info back from a Larry Perrone of ANP Transcription. Fortunately I googled ANP before doing anything and there are piles of complaints here and at other sites about them not paying MTs. I have gone round and round for days with them that legally they cannot require a schedule of an IC...but they don't care, one bit. I would totally be leery of this job. They are liars and cheats and are always wanting you to work your days off and over, but pay you NO OVERTIME!! BEWARE AND BE SURE you are truly an Independent contractor. This info is available on the IRS.GOV website (type Independent contractor in the SEARCH box and then click on IC defined). Just quit there. Seriously lacks organization. Their India "allocation" team throws bits and pieces at you, very low volume, but then hammers your IM to death. Example, a 12 minute report is assigned, I would just get started on it and within less than 10 minutes they want to know where it is. WTF?! Surprise, I was made to feel like an idiot again yesterday. In the middle of the report the doc mumbled a drug so I went to look it up on an old report. I use a program called DSS2Wave which converts DSS/DS2 files to Wav files. I LOVE this program and have been using it for over 2 years.
