"The politics of corporate medicine has replaced helping patients" - Valley Girl

Posted: Apr 10, 2014

Article on Kevin MD by Jordan Grumet.

The doctors are serfs, working for the corporations, just like the MTs.

Hospital administration has always decided for the doctors. - it just never hit us until technology got better

and the doctors had no say in VR, EMR, etc., either.

You may be surprised to be informed that the very first tenet of the AMA is NOT about patient care, healing or anything as loft as that. the very first tenet of the organization is to PROTECT THE INCOME OF THE DOCTOR..yeah so much for marcus welby....I am beyond burned out with medicine and transcription and well PEOPLE. I want to sit in a darkened room and talk to my cat. Does anyone anywhere pay for that???

Yup. That's why doctors aren't so good anymore. - Good ones left when HMOs took over everything.

They didn't want to be told how to practice medicine. Corporate HMOs force their current docs to practice "run 'em in, run 'em out" medicine. It's all a big corporate game, now.

If the law allowed, I'd rather see a veterinarian than an M.D.

ha, ha. I usually take my dog's drugs - Val

When I need an antibiotic. So far, I haven't taken her Meloxicam or Tramadol.

News to me about the AMA tenet.

Corporate Medicine (long Post)

From the Naked Capitalism web site. Note the production, production mantra.  It's the only think these biz types know.     The Stealthy, Ugly Growth of Corporatized Medicine Posted: 25 Apr 2014 01:16 AM PDT Yves here. We’ve written a great deal about Obamacare, since it epitomizes so much about what is wrong with contemporary America: the use of complexity to mask looting, the creation of two-tier systems, the crapification of the underlying servi ...

Office Politics
Dec 14, 2013

Hi, Does anyone have any tips on how to keep the providers organized? I have one provider I transcribe for who never sends his work and then says he sent it when he didn't. I don't have any problems with the other seven providers, just one. When he does send the work, he always says "this is lost dictation" or "this was dictated and sent a second time". This has been going on for almost six years. I take pride in my work and really enjoy it until I get his work. I always say I can&# ...

Need Advice Regarding Office Politics
Mar 13, 2011

I would appreciate it if some of you could share your thoughts and offer advice about how I should handle a workplace situation.  I do MT on site and work Saturdays with one other transcriptionist.  We work on production and everyone's numbers are posted on an internal website for us to view.  Our production is being monitored pretty closely now because there may be staffing cuts in a few months and that is one of the criteria being used to decide who gets to keep their job.& ...

Being Replaced By Machines
Sep 23, 2011

"New technology" is often given as a reason for loss of MT jobs, even though skilled MTs are still needed in mamy capacities.  Ours is not the only field of work that will be losing more and more jobs.  A famous department store is testing kiosks with touch screens that customers can use to shop in the store, but just like they would online.  I had a cosmetics sales job in one of these stores in between MT gigs and it paid $20/hr plus commission.  We had t ...

Cerumenectomy-something Was Replaced
Aug 14, 2013

Dr. has just visualized the ear with the operative microscope and cleanded his cerumen.  He had canal cholesteatoma of the lateral boney canal at the junction with the cartilaginous canal.  "The area was cleaned, there was some granulation present, *siptred extroffs* replaced, the remaining canal and drums appear normal." ...

OOW,POC,TSM, Helping On Other Accounts...
Jan 17, 2015

IMO, this new contact sheet is another way to make someone appear as though they have an important job... Did all accounts start this?  Maybe it is just mine.... It is 2 pages of emails, protocols, instructions...it has been revised numerous times in the last 2 weeks...we are supposed to print it---I am running out of ink--I have printed it every time it is revised to the "final." If I still have to email that I am OOW, and then wait for a reply on what to do, how does this help me? &nbs ...

UAW Could Not Stop Workers Being Replaced On Their Lines By Robots, Only Needed 10
Oct 16, 2014

Unions cannot change tax structures which encourage off-shoring. Wish they could. CEOs earn their big bonuses by reducing costs any way they can! Why wouldn't they hire cheaper labor since that is their very purpose? Especially in a company with no corporate ethic requiring otherwise. ...

Helping Doctor With EMR--funny
Feb 24, 2012

You gotta laugh so you don't cry!  My son works with hospitals on computer programs, and he sent me an amusing YouTube link to watch.  I thought some of you might be able to relate.   At the YouTube site, do a search for "Jane and the Doctor."  The subtitle of the video reads, "Jane tries to help a doctor place orders in the EMR."  It's animated, but it was clearly done by someone who knows a thing or two about EMR implementation!    ...

Patients Have No Idea...
Apr 18, 2012

Last night I was taken out to dinner by my now full-time employer, his wife, and few other folks who joined us (yes, Imagine that, I actually enjoy spending time with them and they treat employees great.)  Someone asked me about my former 10-year career as an MT.... I told them how much I loved the actual job, and then told them what a MESS ASR and EPIC make of a patient's record if it is unedited.  I recounted some of the "funny" mistakes (only funny in the fact that AS ...

Are Doctors Really Seeing More Patients Because Of EMR??
Oct 31, 2014

Too broke to see a doctor in several years I finally saw one today and got to witness the "benefits" of EMR.  The new patient documents were scanned into the doctor's laptop.  The software was not able to translate handwriting, so all that was a waste. Basically the doctor had to go over every question and missed many that did not scan.  The only hands-on he did was to look in ears & throat.  Everything else he was glued to the laptop trying to type in everything I s ...

Helping Is A BAD Idea/Demeaning Emails....
Feb 04, 2015

I will never help on an unfamiliar account again--no matter what.   Why would I want to work on an unfamiliar account when I will get paid less for everything I do in a week because I have to send jobs to QC on an unfamiliar account? Today is my day off and I am reading emails that are demeaning, threatening and just plain mean.  I have done this job for 17 years and after all that time, I feel like I must be so horrible at it, that I am going to get fired.   Using phrases such ...

Vent: Not Caring For Patients
Nov 20, 2010

Dictators (MDs, PAs, RNPs, etc.) who dictate so fast and so sloppily cannot possibly care about the welfare of their patients.  If they did, they would want a clear and accurate record with no room for misunderstanding or errors. Doing the paperwork is part of the job.  If you don't want to do it with reasonable clarity, then perhaps you just shouldn't be practicing at all. If I ever meet any of these in person I will tell them flat out how horrible they are and what a terr ...

"take Good Care Of Our Patients" BARF
Mar 04, 2015

Have a good TSM, so I shouldn't complain too much.  But getting sick and tired of comments about taking care of our patients, thanking us for quality care of patients, etc.  I know she realizes we are all concerned about our paychecks right now as much as anything else.  Not that we don't give a darn about quality, but we are after all working to try to make a living.  Corporate is just shoving this quality crap down our throats every chance they get.  I am sur ...
