Re THE POLL - Seriously

Posted: Dec 23, 2011

For all of you who screamed (yes I heard it as screaming or whining) about the purpose, ulterior motives, etc.  For gawd's sake, if you are posting anonymously, what does it matter to give the particular information the poster asked for?  No, I'm not the OP and I'm not an MTSO, don't own a suit.  Just someone who can't figure out how some of you get through life being outright miserable, suspicious, and unhappy.

Sharing info with another MT (or even if he/she IS an MTSO what difference would it make?) is not a big deal.  They aren't going to come knock on your door and ask for verification, they aren't calling the IRS and telling them to look you up.

Hoping maybe for a few days, there can actually be some unity here, doesn't hurt to wish.

Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas to All - jj

[ In Reply To ..]
I liked your post, have been avoiding posting much because of the acrimony, so wanted to post on something positive! I agree about the poll, if you don't want to reveal that info about yourself, then ignore the post! No need to get worked up over it! Even if a "suit" wrote it, what could they do with that info?

Anyway, my family is all arriving tonight and tomorrow and I plan on having a wonderful Christmas, not going to thing about work one bit! It is my holiday off (I will need to work it next year) and I am going to enjoy it!

Thank you for saying - Nothertimer

what I was thinking. Seems like a lot of folks are bitter on this forum and maybe rightfully so, but it does get old.

I agree - CB

I just posted below on the thread, and agree. Responding with what a company pays and what platform they use, and how fast I type is supposed to be 'dangerous' personal information to share? I don't agree, obviously. In fact, this is one of the few threads that actually had some helpful, current information about the MT business. I wish there were more.

Posting this from below - sm

I'm posting here my reply from below, as it is so far down unsure if many will see it. I was not screaming or whining. Maybe you are talking about other posters. I just posted my feelings about being asked personal information. What you may think is anonymous, isn't always the case.

So, here is a message I posted below. If you read that, then just ignore this...

I am the poster who replied that others claimed I was paranoid, etc, etc. I know you didn't mean to upset people, but here is why I replied. My DH is an investigator. I can't tell you how many times he tells me over and over and over not to give out personal information to strangers. Then 10 years ago (actually now it's 11 years ago) I had my identity stolen. They knew where I worked and my hours. They came by and stole mail from my mailbox, needless to say on Christmas eve when I went to check my balances my accounts were wiped out.

All I was saying is first, there are hundreds of thousands of people who read this board. You don't have to be an MT to read the messages. There are criminals all over the world. Their job is to get people's personal information and you know the rest.

So, if I was to reply to your message that I work for a company named XYZ and I make such-n-such a year, and my hours are this or that. It's not hard for a criminal to get a hold of this information and find out who you are. That is what they do for their "profession" if you could call it that. Coming on this board and telling hundreds of thousands of people who you work for and how much money you make all I'm saying is not a good idea.

It's hard to believe so many people think it's all innocent and everyone here is friends, but I'm telling you because my husband has investigated hundreds (or more) identity/security investigations and I myself have been a victim, all I was saying is that I don't think it's a good idea to be giving out personal information to people you don't know. You can call it paranoia if you want. When you've been a victim of a crime I just call it common sense.

I see my response stirred up so many ridiculing replies. All I was saying is I don't know who you are or what you were going to do with this personal information. I'm glad there are so many people in this country who are trusting of those they don't know. Its nice to know all innocence is not lost. I guess until it happens to you people just do not realize how awful it can be.

P.S. - you never did say in your OP what the information was going to be used for. Just, who do you work for, how much money do you make, what are your hours, etc. Maybe if the questions were worded differently and you didn't ask who we work for and how much we make I would have answered the rest. Something just didn't sit right.

I do wish everyone a very happy holiday. Hope this next year brings happiness for all.

What's with the all or nothing 'tude? - jj

Why not just answer what you feel comfortable with and leave it at that? If other people feel comfortable with sharing more, what really is it to you?

As an aside, good way to prevent identity/credit theft is to freeze your credit report...that way someone can't open accounts under your information without specific authorization.

No all or nothing "tude" - sm

Okay, here are my answers to the questions that are okay to answer:

How many years have you been in this business? - 22

What company do you currently work for? - Too personal, should not be asked.

What platform (if any) do you currently work with? - Word

How many lines per hour do you average? - Depends on the dictator and how long the reports are. Good dictators 150, bad ones 100.

How many hours a week do you work? FT and more when they need me.

What is your rate of pay (per line)? Too personal - should not be asked.

If you make more than 25K annually, to what do you attribute your ability to do so? - Way way way too personal. Question should have been something like - What do you attribute to your ability to produce a high line count? (She does not need to know how much money a person makes a year.) My answer to that question would be having many short cuts, not using the number keypad on the side of the board, but instead using the numbers above the letters. Speeding up the dictation a hare. When you have a dictation on slow speed you type slower.

Okay, those are the non-personal questions and I hope that helps the OP.

I was just telling my experience why its not a good idea to give personal information to strangers. Just wanting to save the headache (and heartache) of people having identity stolen in something they think is so innocent. If I can help others by a simple reminder not to give out their personal information then I can sleep at night much better thank you. As an aside, having gone through identity theft I have learned how to protect my information, which includes not giving out personal information to strangers. Your tip is a good tip and hope it helps other posters to know this.

Now, if you want to give out personal information to strangers go for it. Just don't say nobody told you not to. :-)

Why should anyone answer any of the questions at all? - Seriously

[ In Reply To ..]
Just because someone asks is no reason for anyone to feel that an answer is required to any stranger asking for information of any kind. I still think the person taking the poll had reasons other than a quest for personal improvement. The questions were intrusive and none of her business. I didn't feel comfortable with any of it. I don't blame people for being suspicious and reluctant to cooperate or for anyone's attempt to recommend caution to others.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU - Im glad a couple others got it

the poll - seriously
[ In Reply To ..]
It seems YOU are missing the point. There was no threat at gun point. If you felt the issues were too personal, then you just DO NOT REPLY. Instead, those of you who felt the need to get on a soap box and decry the invasion, made it about YOU and YOUR OPINION (btw- which was NOT requested).

I think some of you chicks are a tad crazy, lol!

Identity Theft - Seriously

[ In Reply To ..]
If someone can read the company I work for and what I make and what platform I type on, on an anonymous MT board, and steal my identity, then they are welcome to my identity. Seriously. I'm one of a thousand MTs that work for said company. I do think some caution is indicated when using Personal Data, but I really didn't give any personal data. Paranoia WILL destroy ya.

MT Poll

I am curious as to the status of other MTs around the country.  If you are a regular production-paid MT working as an employee or IC for a transcription company (i.e. not a team lead, supervisor, owner, etc.), I would appreciate your feedback in this little poll.
