Can we do a pay poll? - Anonymously, of course....

Posted: Oct 30, 2014

I think it will help us all to know where we stand.  Maybe put a range of experience first, like 1-5 years, 6-10 years, 11-15 and 15+ and then your Regular/SR rate (not including any eve or weekend differentials).  I'll start:

11-15 years of experience.  0.0825 regular/ 0.0465 SR.

For me, this is a pay cut recently.  I was working at a different company until recently, making .09 regular and .05.  Even though I know this MT thing is going down, it still sucks to get a new job at LESS than I was making before.  I did ask for what I was making but they said no....it's 0.0825 or nothing.  : (

Anyone else want to add their pay info and how they feel about it?

Exact same for me - sm

One daughter started working last year at 21 years of age - zero experience in anything but small retail - got a job with a government contractor in our community assembling passports for $11+ hour

Another daughter at 28 with 4 years part time retail merchandising experience took a full time position with same merchandising company at Walmarts for $13.25/hr

I am on my way out... happy for my kids, sorry experience counts for nothing here.

Boy you are lucky to get 0825.

I went from 08 to 06.5 after system makes it that way. I don't do VR.

Just sickening to know I have 27 years experience and getting so much less.

They need to do something about this law wise. People earning such low wages while the company gets everything. I am also an IC so I get no tax breaks and pay all of my own SS and Medicare which I have done since I became an IC nearly 15 years ago.

Amazing, how little they think of experience or care about paying a decent wage.

I do not intend to work long hours nor to ruin my hands again by trying to get way many more lines to get what I did. Have already had CTS with bilateral CTRs on both hand, however, I have to have some kind of pay.

I completely agree with you, anonie... - 8 to

6.5 cents a line is an insult to you, especially if you are IC!!

I don't really feel "lucky" to get .0825 after being paid 9 though. I know it's a normal thing in this "career" to be paid less and less but it stinks nonetheless. With your experience you should be making more. I don't know what your circumstances are, but IC jobs usually pay a little MORE than being an employee. ???

Here's what chaps my hide - about VR rates.

[ In Reply To ..]
First, this is a knowledge job and we're not being paid for our knowledge. It takes the same amount of knowledge to "edit" a line produced by VR (even if the edit only amounts to pronouncing it to be correct) as it does to type the same line of dictation. By rights, a line of edited dictation should be paid the same rate as a line of typed dictation.

But, let's say that the MTSO has a right to pay somewhat less for editing purely on the basis of less physical labor being required compared to straight typing. Typically, VR rates are half of typing rates ON THE THEORY THAT WE CAN EDIT TWICE AS MANY LINES AS TYPED LINES.

Now, I don't know about you, but I can straight-type around 275-300 lines per hour, and I'm a very good editor but I've never achieved double those lines with VR, and I don't know of anyone who consistently does so unless they are a very slow typist and/or have extremely wonderful dictators, which I certainly don't (about 70% ESL) and/or use lots of templates (for which they get paid).

The idea of "doubling your lines" with VR is BOGUS, and I for one am sick of that being offered as the reason for paying half the line rate that's paid for straight typing.

Almost all of my reports not only require editing every line, but MULTIPLE edits on every line, renumbering lists, changing punctuation, and a lot more. My VR rate is about 400 lph, sometimes more, sometimes less, but certainly NOT "double" my typing rate.

So, the least that VR should pay, in my experience and opinion, is about 3/4ths of the rate paid for straight typing.

But It Wouldn't Be Minimal Wage - Meh

[ In Reply To ..]
The company suits want to keep its workers poor so they can get richer, even though they don't need nearly that much money unless they have sixty kids to support. If they paid the same amount for editing as regular typing, workers would make twice as much, which would mean they would have to pay twice the minimum wage or around $17.00/hour.

32 years experience - 0.085 regular/0.045 SR. I work 2nd shift, so get - hold onto your pants! - 0.0025 differential, weekend I get 0.0075 differential. I average about $10.75 to $11/hour - what I made as a hospital transcriptionist in 1996.

Before I was laid off from my hospital job in 2011, was making $19.47/hour plus incentive, so was averaging $21/hr.

Pay poll - Not a profession any longer

27/hour just 4 months ago to offers all the same....2nd or 3rd shift, 7 type and 3.5-4 VR. UNACCEPTABLE! 20 years experience, QA, management, mentoring, etc. I hope everyone moves out of the field and leaves these companies out of domestic resources..

30 years experience. .08/.045
I get about 1 page to transcribe every 3 months. Editing I only average $6.75 hour.

I can double that on the RARE days where I have all good dictators and I don't have to spend hours searching for foreign doctor's names. If they knew how to use pause buttons I could add about 20% to my production. Yet these clueless dictators still think there is an MT department down the hall that has all their hospitals doctors names memorized, knows the names & addresses of all other medical services, pharmacies, towns, etc. in their area and is under the assumption that we are paid hourly, or at least fairly.

I was dying to get off work tonight, exhausted, frustrated and completing a very lengthy and complex report. At the end he dictates "Please make sure that all of my histories and data is in chronological order". Those days are long gone, doc!

30+ years experience - 10 cents a line, plus four hours per day at $14 doing "clerk work" in hospital setting. I make good money.. BUT... it will soon change as it looks like we are being outsourced... I was praying it would last until I turned 66.. just 6.6 years away... but does not look like it will happen...

30+ YEARS SINCE 1984 - CINDY

I made much more money in the 90s and beginning of 2000. Sometimes I couldn't believe I was making so much, but those days are definitely gone. Now this job barely pays one bill. I am really amazed that these companies can get away with this. Do the cashiers at grocery stores have to punch out while waiting for a customer to come up to their register. This field is really disgusting. And I will be out of here as soon as I pass my nursing license test, but it is really ashamed what have happened to this field. The companies must be undercutting their price so much to keep up with the competition. Back in the old days my supervisor would stick up for us if there was a mistake or something on the chart that was obviously the doctor's fault. Nowadays, mistake = bye bye or getting bad grades. I pray that we all get some good news soon about our jobs, which would be a miracle.

47 years experience, both medical and legal, 0.65 cpl, no allowance made for w/e and vacation, which is expected, rarely get straight transcription at $1.10 per digimin, as an I.C. used to earn between $25-$30 per hour, and some, depending on client, those days are gone and private clients are fast disappearing into the outsource world. Reckon my pay is now 1/3 on average of what it used to be. Why am I still here? I am old, love the work, and do not want to do more hours or go to an office, even if there was a job to be found. One day this will come back to haunt the hospitals, there will be so many lawsuits with errors being made, since as someone previously mentioned, we are not down the hall, having memorized all the drs names, local towns, and have the file in front of us. If I hear one more dictator say pls send a copy to the family doctor, with no given name, spelling, nothing, I will scream. Well I do anyway! lol

Pay poll - Disappointed

[ In Reply To ..]
Wow, after 9 years of being an MT and going good work, I (like so many others) would LOVE to get another job.....my pay right now stinks at 0.321 VR and .0766 straight. I know many have said this but it just burns me up that the dictators are NOT held to any kind of standard but WE are. I am so tired of correcting things that THEY should know. The people who have put MTs into this bind should be ashamed, even though I'm sure they're not.
