This occurred to me today and just thought I'd share. What if this were a supportive forum? No, no, I'm not talking about not complaining, etc., that's important to do, IMO. But, we are all in the same craft, so maybe we could cheer one another on! Even get to know one another. OMG, that would be awful! I was in a completely different industry a few years ago, and it was full of stress and difficulty, and we griped all the time, but in the end, we lifted one another up, versus pointing out what ELSE is wrong.
Imagine all the people.
Call me Pollyanna, but I think most people who come to the board are coming here for support, since this type of work can be very isolating. I agree, it would be nice if there were no snarky drive-by comments, but I think anytime you have an anonymous site, you're going to attract the angry and bitter people. I don't think there are too many of them on the board, but it may seem like it sometimes when they are posting like crazy. I think most of us just try to ignore them.
I think a good analogy is the local news on TV. It's probably 80% horrible news with crime and death because a "good news" newscast would have no viewers.
For me, I try not to read the snarky comments and, as much as I want to reply to them in my best mommy voice with "knock it off" or "go to your room," I resist the temptation to acknowledge their existence and hope they will just go away. Like the bully in 2nd grade who can't get a rise out of others, he gets frustrated and moves on.
Life is too short to let those bitter people get under my skin.
Try not to give up on the board. There are a ton of us here who actually like what we do and are thankful for any and all support we can get from each other.
