GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION - RADGIRL

Posted: May 17, 2010

Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession.   I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India.   Now all that's left are transcription companies here in the U.S. that don't want to pay much more, lie to us and tamper with our line counts.   GET OUT, GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION!

Agreed. I'd not advise anyone to go to MT school now - cashstrapped

The industry is dying. No future in it.

I sadly agree - sm - sssdt

When I started school our local hospital was hiring MTs. By the time I finished my 18 months at M-TEC, the hospital went to EMRs that the nurses fill out themselves. Advertised job pay is down from what I saw when I researched the MT field 3 years ago, and less places are hiring newbies right out of school. I really wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

For those already in transcription, that's a different story I'm sure. For new people considering it, I really don't think it's a good idea.

JUST CURIOUS - anonymous

Not being sarcastic...do you have any suggestions of what to do instead of transcription? I am 52 years old...have been doing this for over 20 years and on top of it all, I am a single mom with sons still living at home. I was making $30/hour when I owned my own small transcription company before my divorce 12 years ago. Then, worked for a hospital and got really spoiled making between $17-25/hour with great benefits...now I am reduced to this...I've even thought of going back to school, but am afraid it is too late to start something new. I am not excited about where transcription is going or has gone. I do not like editing and definitely do not like my paychecks. I have to work for 2 companies to try to make ends meet, but end up having to work my main job more than 8 hours to make my lines required to stay full-time. And then depression set in...

That last sentence perfectly describes me...nm - eary bird

If it isn't working for you, the smart thing to do is get out and get out now. If it is working, gotta love it! There are very few jobs anywhere these days and when you get to do what you love doing, from your own home, without paying gas, car repair, clothing, eating out, childcare, etc., it's beautiful.

So it's all in how you look at it and if it works for you or not. No job is ever right for everyone. For way too many years we've had MTs who just did this work because they bumbled into it, not because they were good at it. They stayed with it because working at home is so great for most of us. Then the employer who allowed them to bumble into it retires or goes out of business and, uh oh! Nobody else will put up with that quality of work. It's a different world. It's truly time for the MTs who fall into that category to do something else.

Ah! So the BUMBLEbees eventually have to buzz off. I see. - bobo

I totally agree. I was making 17.00 an hour in-house with benefits. They want perfection, etc. and pay crap. If I were 20 years younger I would go back to school. It is almost insulting what they pay and expect from us. PLUS I didnt pass an audit. What the crap does that really mean?? Oh, I forget to hit the space bar twice after a sentence to many times (?????).

I think "not passing an audit" means more than not spacing - Reality Check

[ In Reply To ..]
I wouldn't take it as an insult. It is something that comes more naturally to some people than others. Just find a career that you do really well and leave MT behind in the dust, for those of us who enjoy the 'perfection and spacing the right number of times. Good luck with your new career!

That was nasty. nm - CrispyCritterMT

I am staying. I love working from home. I am also pretty good - at MT. They can do whatever they want.

[ In Reply To ..]
There are a lot of professions being replaced by India and VR ; it's not just us. I cannot afford to not do it. It is no better anywhere else. Everyone is overworked and underpaid and afraid to say anything due to losing their job in any profession.

I like what I do. I am not going anywhere because Chicken Little shows up and tells me the sky is falling. I have been in this profession too long now to just run away. Running is the cowardly way out. But I guess if you can no longer hang with the big dogs, then get off the porch! LOL

And I'll bet - WW

Your job is not your only income. Probably have a husband or something to keep you afloat.

Mentalities like this keep our wages depressed. - Some think only of themselves

[ In Reply To ..]
"They can do whatever they want."

:-(

If you are experiencing depressed wages, you're probably in the wrong job or career - Time to do something about it

[ In Reply To ..]
You have choices. You can either adapt or find something else that works better for you. That's a pretty simple solution. To assume that everyone has to feel the same way is just wrong. Some are doing well and others don't like this kind of work for whatever reasons. It doesn't make anyone bad. You just have to find the right career for you.
yeah, preferrably one where wages go UP not DOWN - or at least - stay the frigging same. who are U?

As an MTSO, I see an entirely different side. I can't find good help or I am not very good at picking the best person from the resumes I get. I have hired people and spent the time getting them set up to work only to find out that they suddenly got their old job back, had a death in the family, would prefer to start tomorrow.... the list is endless. I have what I consider easy clinic work compared to all the hospital accounts I have worked on myself. Out of 22 doctors, there are only 4 ESL dictators. We don't do VR, we are straight typing in Word and you work from a wav file that you pick up off an FTP site. Some accounts have templates that include 32 built in lines. I pay weekly and I pay on time via direct deposit. If someone doesn't pay me on time, I am the one who goes without pay. I pretty much work 24/7 and am beginning to wonder if this is even worth it and based upon the resumes and wishy washy trancriptionists I encounter, I can really see why people outsource. Does everyone think the grass is greener?

To get the good MTs, you have to charge the client - more so you can pay the MT more. (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
Anyone working for less than 10 or 11 cpl is pretty much just treading water until something better, preferably in a different field, comes along. No matter how "great" MTSO's think their software is, most of it is only good for THEM, or for their CLIENT. Most of the time it short-changes the MT by making their job slower and less productive, which at ANY pay scale can be a disaster. If you're paying somewhere around +/- 8cpl, slow transcription platforms spell only one thing to the MT: P-O-V-E-R-T-Y.

I disagree with your conclusion but respect your right to think that - Not quite that simple

[ In Reply To ..]
It isn't necessary to make 10 or 11 cpl to do well. There are all sorts of variables including equipment, software, accounts, incentive pay, bonuses, etc. It just isn't as simple as lines per hour.

A Day Without Transcription?
May 28, 2010

It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand. Impossible, I know, but I bet employers would sit up and take notice. ...

PLEASE..do not be foolish enough to work for this company!!  They are offerring 3 cents for VR.  A seasoned MT well versed in voice recognition software, particularly Editscript, produced by eEscription out of Massachusetts, can make 500-600 lines per hour. At 3 cents a line that is slave wages.
