WOW just got my W2 for 2012 - Hapless

Posted: Jan 17, 2013

Can anybody cheer me up. This is so disgusting I have just decided to take early Social Security retirement because my pay is soooo low, and the limit for 2013 to earn is $15,320. So I guess these disgusting pay rates are good for one thing.

I have 7 more years before I can take early SS. - mt2

But believe me, I'm applying as soon as I can. My plan is to see how much I can draw off my husband's and then work part-time, even in a grocery store. Anything is better than being a MT. This is the lowest salary I have made in 24 years. I cannot wait to tell this company to kiss my butt.

According to what I was told, you don't draw off your hubby - patches

[ In Reply To ..]
until he reaches full retirement age which, right now, is age 66. Then you can draw half of his. Until then you take your own minus the percentage (20%) for taking early retirement. Check the SS website to make sure...or call them...but be prepared for different answers depending on how many times you call and who answers the questions (different every time).

I'm on countdown right now--6 months to wait until my DH is 66. I don't get enough SS to pay the bills. In fact, if it was just me, I'd be below the poverty rate big time.

Unless hubby is deceased - which I sincerely hope - he is not

then, you do indeed draw from your spouses's SS.

Before you take your social better be sure - PR

you really know what you are doing and have enough money set aside. I have a BIL and his wife who both took early and both had extremely good jobs, 1 gov and 1 at top phone place, anyway they wound up borrowing money from my husband here lately. Lots of people think the early is all that but have to return to some type of job to make ends meet. I am past full social security age, take that and also work part-time, never stopped working to draw though.

My parents together drew 1300 SS. After my dad passed, my mom got 900.
Lacking $300 monthly I draw on social security - P
[ In Reply To ..]
the highest monthly amount you can draw which is a LOT of work in my past. I am fortunate I was able to do this but even with this still have issues with going to social security only plus another check from previous inhospital job each month. I love to spend and have the money to spend and hate, hate to rub nickels together so to say. I have a cousin who took early retirement, he had some health issues and now at full retirement age he has hired on full time at his job again and drawing still on his social security. I am not sure if he gets the full amount now being as he is over age 66. What I see and hear are people having to return to work because most on SS do not have enough income.

My husband is already on SS Disability. sm - mt2

According to SS website, I can draw up to 50% of his check at age 62. Then at my full retirement age, I drop his and draw mine. That's the plan.
My plan is to draw on my husband's SS....... - mt2

and continue to work until I am 67 and 8 months. THEN draw my full retirement. I would like to work part-time from 62 on, but that will depend on how much I can make while collecting SS from him.
This is off SS Website...... - mt2

. Claim twice

Let's say the husband is 66 and the wife is 62. If the husband files for benefits, the wife could opt for half her husband's benefit, while still earning money and letting her benefit grow. She can drop the spousal benefit and file for benefits based on her own work record whenever she wants. If she waits until age 70, she'll have the maximum benefit using her own history.

My husband is disabled, so I can claim up to 50% of his PLUS work part-time. 62 cannot come fast enough.
What are you guys saying? If you husband is - getting SS benefits SM
[ In Reply To ..]
at age 66 you can also get half of that at the same time? He gets full and you get half?
My husband is 56, on disability. s/m - mt2

So since he is already drawing SS, when I turn 62, I can draw up to 1/2 of his monthly check and still work x amount of hours per year (part-time). Check out the SS website. I did after I read an article in the Tampa Trib.
Plus even if you have an ex-spouse, as long as .... - mt2

you were married at least 10 years (I think that's correct), once he draws SS and you want to still work, you can draw up to half of his check.

Re: Taking early SS - Arizona sunshine

When I turned 62, I wanted to take early SS, but after meeting with the SS people and seeing the difference, I waited until I was 65. That was still takine it one year before my full retirement age of 66, but my family needed some help, and I could still make 38K the year I was 65 without having a penalty from the IRS. At 62, I waited to collect SS and instead took on two MT jobs, to make up for the money I would need. Now that I am 65, I am glad I waited. Of course, everyone's situation is different and you have to do what you have to do, but if you can hold on for three more years, it is a much higher payout. Good luck, whatever you decide. As my brother said the other day, he never thought he would live to see the country in such a financial mess, and I agree.

This is not country alone, some people are doing ok - P

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree with waiting because it is a tremendous increase from taking early; however having said that I disagree with the statement of this issue being because the country is in a mess. Even though not having lived through the depression, I know about it and today's living is a piece of cake compared to that. No one has to sit around, waiting on work that may never materialize, going broke, losing your home, not being able to buy food, having bills that are not getting paid. Anyone and I mean anyone can find a job and make some money. If 1 job does not pay enough, then get several. A lot of jobs that are out there are ones that we as Americans think we are too good to do.

I would take early if I could - Sunny2

because there is so much talk of raising the retirement age that, of necessity, will raise the early age, too. It is such a mess, people real soon will be shocked with what is going to happen to Social Security, Medicare and health care-they are all intertwined.

I recently applied for early SS. sm - BabyBoomerMT

Waiting for approval. First payment will actually be 2 months after I turn 62. That part surprised me even though I read up on the SS site. Also have to start part-time the month before first payment or they will hold my first benefit payment for that month. First year you retire early, you are under special rules.

Maybe if MModal hired fewer employees from Microsoft they could afford to pay transcriptionist better and allow for cost of living raises.  I have been a transcriptionist for going on 30 years and this company is one of the reasons we can't make a living wage.  I am so tired of hearing the term "industry standard" because in the past when I worked with other companies and directly in-house I was paid more.  Just because it is the "industry standard" does not make it right. &n ...
