Interview next week. - Question

Posted: Apr 30, 2015

This is for a medical assistant, and all aspects of duties in the office, including transcribing and/or scribing.  One of the questions on the application was, "Are you willing to become x-ray certified?"  Does anyone know what that would entail?

They are asking you to become an x-ray tech without proper training - Cutting out the RTs to save $

[ In Reply To ..]
Radiology Technologists (RTs) are registered, not certified. Certification is a short training program, but looking for a cheap way to undercut those with good, solid training. You'll also be into the heavy-lifting part of medical care unless all you do is chest x-rays or maybe mammograms. Offices are doing that these days. It's another way of lowering salaries.

Say yes to any opportunity that is offered! - Stay positive and open-minded.

If they are paying for it, do it. I am not sure why you would hesitate or question this--anything that gives you more qualifications adds to your employability. Why would you say no to something that would be to your benefit?

Find out the requirements for your state. This should be available online.

I worked in a similar situation with a title of MA/Scribe. I was also offered the opportunity to become a limited X-ray tech. Our clinic offered us a book to study, which was great. We also had weekly instruction, which was not so great. I could have passed the test with just the book. I chose not to continue, since after starting we were told our wage would not increase. I felt this wasn't fair, since we would be exposed to radiation. Our clinic was too busy anyway, so being a scribe took up all of my time. There was no time to MA or do X-rays. All 3 of these combined is pretty much impossible, unless you are seen maybe 25 patients per day. It doesn't matter if the clinic thinks they can save money, 1 person can't perform all of these duties. How can you be in the room scribing, yet taking X-rays and answering phone calls? It isn't really possible. Go for it if you want the training, but you'll be working your tail off and getting exposed to radiation for mid to low wages.

oh my dear heavens I would jump at the chance! - Wanna be xray tech

Before MT i did a year of prerequisite studies to become an xray tech. the college I applied at only took 25 a year and 5 alternates. Entry to the program was based on completed courses plus testing. I was an alternate. I was heartbroken and as a young single mother I didn't have another year to wait. So I went into MT. I am back in college but I had forgotten all about Xray tech. In a way I wish I had gone on with that instead of the path I am on now because it is going to take me 40 forevers to get done with what I am doing but I will be in a secure, stable career. MT has been a fun ride while it lasted but i'm at the end of the line with it!

In many states, you can take the limited tech exam without going to school. That's the case in my state. I wouldn't get a bachelors in radiology. It's a very specialized degree, and there is always the possibility of losing your job to a limited tech. The way health care is going, they are searching for any way to save money. I'd go for a degree in something broader, like health information or health administration. The book we used was called Radiology Essentials for Limited Practice. There is a workbook that goes with it also. You can pass the exam with that book alone if your state allows no schooling.

Update On Outside Job Interview Posted Last Week
Feb 01, 2010

I have the job if I want it. The law office was very nice, people nice, but I was overdressed! They all wear casual clothes and they're all young'uns. The job sounds very interesting; contacting judges, doctors, other lawyers to set up depositions and appointments, transcribing the depositions, etc., very hectic and never a dull moment, I was told. Pay is pretty good, too. Had to do a little negotiating there, and they offered a little higher than they usually pay in this positio ...

To all you wonderful MTs working and slaving your lives away, Happy MT Week.  I appreciate you.  I appreciate your kindness when I have a rant or a rave, when I'm at my wits end with the constant changing around of clients, client profiles and the never ending dings being thrown at me. I appreciate knowing that I am not alone in this struggle. It is because of all of you, and only you MTs on this board that I manage to stay in this game.  We are treated as less than second class citiz ...

At 99.4% This Week, Congratulated That I Improved Over Last Week.
Feb 13, 2015

Good grief. I did not change the way I edit. It so depends on how many commas they think you should have. Yes, I made an unusual (for me) mistake last week, but the rest of passing an audit is dumb luck of whether you get a realistic auditor or Ms English wannabe. Everybody must be under pressure because of the cesspool as I see a lot of mistakes when I look up past reports to help with these mush mouths and accents. The time czar wants schedule changes, but I see no problems with turna ...

As MTs, We Should Actually Interview The Companies!
Mar 03, 2010

If you are an MT with 10 or more years experience (actually a requirement with 1 company), and you are testing and interviewing, consider this.  When you do your research on a company that you are applying with, print all the negative posts such as "horrible platform, hardly ever any work, pay is slow, they offshored my account, VR problems, etc., etc."  If you score perfectly on your test and have good recommendations, land an actual interview, we should address these concer ...

Transcribing An Interview
Jul 14, 2010

I am doing some side work transcribing a research interview, and was wondering your opinions.  One of the respondents in the interview panel is ESL.  Her grammar is very often incorrect.  I asked them when I got the project if they wanted the transcription verbatim, and she said "yes, let's leave it true to form."  I had asked because the previous work had a lot of "like" and "you know" in it, and transcribing every utterance was actually really hard.  ...
