I have my first coding job interview next week - so nervous

Posted: Oct 25, 2013

I just finished my program and just passed the RHIT exam.  I have no coding experience, but have medical billing experience from years ago.  I decided to apply to my local hospital for a coding job that does not specifically state experience is required but preferred.  I got an email back that the management team wants to interview me next week.  It's safe to say that the "management team" is more than one person and I am soooooo nervous already!  I haven't had a face-to-face interview for 10 years!  I'm sweating already......

Congratulations! - Good luck to you. nm

You can do it! - I did

I am a recent graduate with no coding experience. I recently had an interview with a management team of three people. I was so nervous. After a couple of questions, I did relax a little and I got the job. Best of luck to you!

Just hired and have interview advice... - MTLeaving

This really helped me with my nerves: I went on YouTube and searched for interview tips and went through a bunch of videos. I wrote down the most frequently asked challenging questions and thought up my answers and jotted them down. Then I practiced my answers outloud for a couple days ahead of interviews, even while I showered (lol). During interviews, both on the phone and in person and one via Skype, I actually did have many behavioral or challenging questions during interviews, and instead of drawing a blank or being caught off guard, I utilized my answers that I'd thought through (worded naturally and not memorized). It really, really helped with confidence and in getting through the interviews.

They seem to love to ask things that start with, "Tell me about a time when you did ... and what was the outcome." "Why should we hire you?" "Tell me about yourself."

Anyway, you might already know this, but just in case, I wanted to let you know that practice really helped a ton and greatly helps with self-confidence. Good luck to you!

Yes, look up "performance based interviews" - sm

You will need an assortment of situations or experiences to use in answering that type of question.

Tell me about a time when you ...

Worked on a team to accomplish a goal. Might be with everyone cooperating, one person not cooperating, with having to convince others that your plan was better, what the outcome was.

Encountered an ethical coding issue, asked to do something unethical, became aware of unethical acts or something you thought might be, what the outcome was.

Provided customer service out of the usual, with your answer showing that you understand customers to be everyone you encounter, coworkers, management, not just people who pay your employer for a service.

Answered coding questions to new or unusual or difficult situations. Where did you find how to do it? No points for not doing anything or saying "I was trained to" or "I only do what I am told," Low points will be given for asking someone or a supervisor. More for looking in online forums. Most for using reputable references, CMS, verifying and confirming in multiple sources, saving what you find, and sharing the new information with others at work. You can also use an example of when you did not do it well, ended up with the wrong solution, had tocorrect it, and learned from your mistake.

Had to use new software, troubleshoot, etc. Low points for answers that reflect sitting like a lump and expecting your employer to train you. More for attending provided training, but learning on your own too. Most for taking initiative to learn, preparing materials for others, and teaching others. Most for making a success under difficult circumstances, short time, etc.

To be successful with this type of interview, you have to put yourself in the employer's shoes. What do THEY think is important? What do you need to be for them?

Thanks - Mt

That is great advice! I had an interview a few months ago where they loved those "tell me a time" or "what is your best/worst" type questions. Wish I would have been better prepared. I am going to take your advice and look these things up for the next time.

Update On Outside Job Interview Posted Last Week
Feb 01, 2010

I have the job if I want it. The law office was very nice, people nice, but I was overdressed! They all wear casual clothes and they're all young'uns. The job sounds very interesting; contacting judges, doctors, other lawyers to set up depositions and appointments, transcribing the depositions, etc., very hectic and never a dull moment, I was told. Pay is pretty good, too. Had to do a little negotiating there, and they offered a little higher than they usually pay in this positio ...

Read Something About What Would Go Against Someone In A Coding Interview. Coders Please Respond :)
Dec 05, 2012

I am still a student, so I am still very naive about a few things involving this grand new venture.   But, since I am almost done with my 4th module at Andrews and getting ready to tackle the certification exams, I have been doing a lot of research and reading about people obtainng their first coding jobs or something in HIM.  I read one scenario where the employer was telling of how she narrows it down to 3 candidates.  Of course, if one goes into an interview and seems as i ...

May 17, 2010

To all you wonderful MTs working and slaving your lives away, Happy MT Week.  I appreciate you.  I appreciate your kindness when I have a rant or a rave, when I'm at my wits end with the constant changing around of clients, client profiles and the never ending dings being thrown at me. I appreciate knowing that I am not alone in this struggle. It is because of all of you, and only you MTs on this board that I manage to stay in this game.  We are treated as less than second class citiz ...

At 99.4% This Week, Congratulated That I Improved Over Last Week.
Feb 13, 2015

Good grief. I did not change the way I edit. It so depends on how many commas they think you should have. Yes, I made an unusual (for me) mistake last week, but the rest of passing an audit is dumb luck of whether you get a realistic auditor or Ms English wannabe. Everybody must be under pressure because of the cesspool as I see a lot of mistakes when I look up past reports to help with these mush mouths and accents. The time czar wants schedule changes, but I see no problems with turna ...

Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

Coding School - Fate Of Coding Due To EMR
Apr 10, 2012

Wondering if there are any coders out there who can give me an idea of the fate of coding due to the EMR. Are there still coding jobs out there? Would it be wise to attend school for coding at this point or do you think it will be lost to the EMR eventually? I live in a rural area and there are advertisements for registered/accredited coders at medical facilities, but I'm afraid of spending all that time and money on schooling only to not be able to find a job. Any information/insight w ...

Do I Need To Take An Actual Coding Course To Learn Coding?
Feb 26, 2014

My sister is taking an online coding course and complains that there is no real "teaching," that she's basically just doing the work in the work book and entering answers online, then taking an online chapter test.  This makes me wonder about the necessity of signing up for an actual course.  I would like to learn how to code, but to me, without any actual instruction, what's the purpose of signing up for one of these online courses? ...
