I only wish the rate of MT pay matched the MT skills, but why am I complaining? Still have a job .... Many years ago, I can remember that my niece would always ask me about my MT work and how I was able to stay at home and do this sort of work on a full-time basis. Back then, I would try to explain to my young 9-year-old niece that it is all about my preference to stay at home and work full-time, instead of working in Corporate America which I did for many years, and having to commute to work every day, sit in traffic for countless hours, and get so stressed out that it literally made me sick to my stomach (i.e., GERD) plus caused awful migraine headaches on a regular basis. At that time, while working 9 to 5 in Corporate America, I remember that I would sit at my desk and pray to God that one day I would be able to return to working at home again -- particularly, so I can avoid being stressed out and avoid multiple illnesses so often, in addition to avoiding all of the "office politics" etc. etc. Well, my prayers were finally answered about 5 years ago -- and now I have returned to working as an MT/ME again working at my home office full-time. So why am I complaining? My mom asked me this question recently, "Why are you complaining?" My only answer to my dear mother was that the MT industry has changed so much -- it is truly scary !! I KNOW that I am good at my job as an MT/ME -- while I edit these SR medical reports every day and then these reports are in turn directly sent to hospitals and clinics across the country, and these reports instantly become part of the patient EMR. Then I started to speak with my doctor friends to get their perspective about switching over to EMR, etc. They each gave me their opinions and the "real deal" about EMR from the physician's point of view. I found their responses very enlightening !! My doctor friends gave me such a wake up call and most of the physicians that I spoke with expresed that the bottom line for them (relating to EMR) is the investment of their time and money. Most were reluctant, however, willing to learn if it did not cost them too much money, of course. Despite all of the politics involved in the MT industry, I truly feel blessed to have a marketable skill, and I can earn a living without the stress of leaving the comforts of my home with FT benefits to boot .... only wish the rate of MT pay matched the MT skills, but why am I complaining? Still have a job ....
