Transferrable skills from MT to what industries? - help

Posted: Mar 29, 2010

I have to get out of MT.  Been doing this over 20 years and am so burnt out.  What are some other industries where these skills would be transferrable?  I'm feeling like MT is all I know how to do and its depressing.  Thinking about taking a Medical Assistant course or something.

if we would qualify to work as a tumor registrar in a hospital, especially those with heavy oncology experience? I see ads for those from time to time.

I knew of someone who went from MT to tumor registrar. - NM

I think a tumor registrar is similar to a coder, you need training and certification.

I also looked for something where my MT background would be relavant. I am taking classes now to work on my healthcare information systems degree. I will be the person at the facility who manages the EMR system and does IT for it. Average salary is around 70K, starts lower for smaller clinics, can get over 100K for large facilities with experience.

Do you like the classes so far? - Sam

I am thinking of a change as well.

yes, so far - pip

I'm sure there will be some dry classes, but that's okay. The coursework is a combination of computer information systems, healthcare administration, and general business. The program director told me there aren't many universities with this type of program yet but I have noticed a couple of programs through online universities.

Where are you taking these classes? - nm

Those jobs are going to be in demand. Your facility is willing to wait for you to finish school? At my place that job requires a master's degree in business.

I don't work at a facility, I work at home for an MTSO. Yes, I will go for my MBA when the bachelor's is finished as that will maximize my earnings. You don't need it for small places like clinics but for big hospitals, definitely.

Sounds like a great opportunity, good for you!

How long will this take and how much? - Curious

This program will take about 6 years? It's obviously not a 2-year program, because you can't do a masters from there. 4 years of college, 1 or 2 more for the masters degree?

You can't be doing it full time if you're working, so that's a total of 7 or 8 years until you get an entry-level doing IT support? Installing hard drives and switching out keyboards???

How much is this going to cost? And how much debt will you have at the end from the Pell grants, bank loans, etc.?

time - pip

No, it's not installing hard drives. It's not general IT. It's specifically managing EMR databases and systems but also being the support person on those if there is a problem. Honestly I don't know everything it entails because I've never done it but the job outlook is great and there are already a lot of opportunities out there, which are just going to increase. I think eventually MT and coding will be fully automated and not a lot of need for an MR department at all, but you still need someone to manage the EMR system.

I don't know how long the programs at online universities take. The one at my local university takes 4 years for a bachelor's and 1-1/2 for a master's, but I already have 2 years' worth of credits towards my bachelor's anyway, so at full-time it won't take that long, although I think it would be worth it anyway. I am going part time right now and working full time but switching that in the fall and going down to part time on work and full time on school to get done faster.

How much it costs just depends on how much tuition is where you take the classes. I'm not taking out any loans. I'm fortunate to be able to be able to pay tuition on my own between my job and my husband's by setting some aside every month.

Look, I'm not trying to talk anyone into this or trying to sell anything, I was just answering the original question of what kind of job would MT skills translate well to, and for me this is it.

Every Day Another Test...at Least I'm Keeping Up My MT Skills!!

Anyone noticed these tests are asking some of the same questoins?  My little answers keep popping up when I start typing in the answer.  The transcription portions are way too long though.  Some are super easy and others are the scum at the bottom of the barrel.  I'm beginning to think we're doing somebody's work for them!  Now I'm thinking about all the money I could have made by transcribing these stupid test reports.  I think one company test ...

If The Pay Matched MT Skills..why Am I Complaining?

I only wish the rate of MT pay matched the MT skills, but why am I complaining? Still have a job .... Many years ago, I can remember that my niece would always ask me about my MT work and how I was able to stay at home and do this sort of work on a full-time basis. Back then, I would try to explain to my young 9-year-old niece that it is all about my preference to stay at home and work full-time, instead of working in Corporate America which I did for many years, and having to commute to work ...

A Question About Data Entry Skills-sm
Mar 26, 2012

I am looking for work as an Mt and not having any luck.  Today, I searched the job service board and found a cool job.  It is an IC position with flexible hours and very good pay.  It is collecting data for the county/township and entering it into a lap top.  They want you to be ableto enter 7000 or more strokes per hour.  I meet all the qualifications except this which, of course, is "key" to the job.  I know nothing of data entry but I hate to pass on the opportun ...

Question About Skills Test/Percentiles
Sep 08, 2014

I took some skills tests, non-MT related, and I'm not sure how to interpret something. I received a 90% (that part I get) which put me in the 56th percentile, and average of 67%. I THINK I know that the 67% means the average people got, who took that test. Is that correct? I don't understand at all the percentile part (the 56.) What does that mean exactly? Thanks! ...

I graduated from M-Tec in Jan. 2011 while working a full-time job.  My plan was to keep working, get a part-time MT job until I gained experienced, and then quit my other job and do MT full time.  I sent out tons of resumes but received no replies except for one that expressed fear I would get burned out working 2 jobs.  After that I got discouraged and stopped looking for MT work for over a year.   Now I'm newly motivated (hate my current job) and want to start looking ...
