A question about data entry skills-sm - OlderMT

Posted: Mar 26, 2012

I am looking for work as an Mt and not having any luck.  Today, I searched the job service board and found a cool job.  It is an IC position with flexible hours and very good pay.  It is collecting data for the county/township and entering it into a lap top.  They want you to be ableto enter 7000 or more strokes per hour.  I meet all the qualifications except this which, of course, is "key" to the job.  I know nothing of data entry but I hate to pass on the opportunity.  Am I being realistic to think that they would look at me as a possible candidate? Would an experienced MT be able to transition to data entry or is it a totally different ballgame?  Thanks.

What have you go to lose. If you don't apply, you may be kicking yourself later on. Data entry is easy. I have done it before. Most of the time, you just enter information into little boxes. If you decide to go for the job and change your mind somewhere along the way, you can always tell them you changed your mind. It may be boring to some people. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

7000 keystrokes in one hour is not much - sm - XXX

I did a 3.5 page NP report yesterday that was over 12,000 characters/ keystrokes, granted some of that is with an expander, it took about 45 mins to do (it was 17 minutes long/194 lines). So I would not sweat over 7000. Depending on the data entry it may be super easy, or may take a week or two to get up to speed it if is a bunch of little tasks being entered and not one big thing. I would apply, as the above poster said you have nothing to lose by trying. I would think being an MT would be an advantage, not a disadvantage. Good luck.

7000 keystrokes = 107 lines - sm

You should be able to do that easily, very easily in fact.

Data entry is simply that - you copy stuff into the program. It's pretty mindless. Apply. Sounds like cake.

What data entry is and why you qualify - sm

What do you mean you know nothing of data entry? It is typing . . . parrot typing, to be exact. You just type information ("data") into a computer. If the patient is John Smith, you type that into where the name goes. Same for all the rest of the info. You just type it where it goes.

This requires no specialized education or even particular skill. It is not usually done at breathtaking speeds, which makes sense when you stop to think that it is not highly skilled work. They may want someone with "experience," but I think you qualify--MT is basically a very intense form of data entry. Lots more skill required for MT and a higher requirement for accuracy.

The only question to my mind would be the software. Whether it is a Excel or Access, you can learn to use them in a few minutes. You will only need to enter data into it, not write the application itself.

Collecting data may involve talking to people. Emphasize your skill in understanding spoken data, even that spoken by ESLs. If it is medical data, you are all set.

Data Entry
Apr 14, 2014

I applied for a data entry job today after being unemployed for nearly 3-1/2 months. I can't seem to find anything I think I could start out doing after being home over the years. It seems data entry would fit for me. Getting back out there is hard. Depression has taken over, but I'm trying to manage without medication. Most days, I would like to go to bed and stay, but haven't up until this point. Anyway, thanks for listening to me vent. I pray I will at least get to interview, ...

DATA ENTRY VS TRANSCRIPTION PAY
Mar 20, 2014

Data Entry Or Medical Transcription?
May 13, 2011

It seems that more and more companies, including some hospitals, are paying per line but then expecting you to do data entry, which of course you are NOT paid for. Just a few examples: Acute care on Dictaphone ExText/Word Client -- faxing, etc. McKisson -- Looking up and changing orders for radiographic studies Rad job posted here -- Entering patient demographics If an employer expects me to sit there and do data entry -- which has NO shortcuts -- IN ADDITION TO transcibing, then they' ...

Anyone Inquired About This One: "Data Entry Database Compiler - Karen"?
Apr 20, 2010

I saw this one on the Job Seeker board (http://forum.mtstars.com/223201.html) and was wondering if anyone responded to it yet. On some levels, it seems legit...but then on other hand it seems like a scam because it keeps talking about their "database compiler software," and I keep thinking about those companies that'll hire you to work for them but in order for you to make "real money" you'd have to buy their software. I know there's plenty of free compiler software on the net, ...

Every Day Another Test...at Least I'm Keeping Up My MT Skills!!
Aug 08, 2010

Anyone noticed these tests are asking some of the same questoins?  My little answers keep popping up when I start typing in the answer.  The transcription portions are way too long though.  Some are super easy and others are the scum at the bottom of the barrel.  I'm beginning to think we're doing somebody's work for them!  Now I'm thinking about all the money I could have made by transcribing these stupid test reports.  I think one company test ...

If The Pay Matched MT Skills..why Am I Complaining?
Oct 29, 2011

I only wish the rate of MT pay matched the MT skills, but why am I complaining? Still have a job .... Many years ago, I can remember that my niece would always ask me about my MT work and how I was able to stay at home and do this sort of work on a full-time basis. Back then, I would try to explain to my young 9-year-old niece that it is all about my preference to stay at home and work full-time, instead of working in Corporate America which I did for many years, and having to commute to work ...

Question About Skills Test/Percentiles
Sep 08, 2014

I took some skills tests, non-MT related, and I'm not sure how to interpret something. I received a 90% (that part I get) which put me in the 56th percentile, and average of 67%. I THINK I know that the 67% means the average people got, who took that test. Is that correct? I don't understand at all the percentile part (the 56.) What does that mean exactly? Thanks! ...

What Ways Can I Continue To Grow In Skills After Graduating?
Jul 13, 2010

Hello fellow MT's! I am almost finished with my MT course, and I would like some counsel from everyone on their experiences with continuing education after graduation. First I am going to go for my RMT as recommended by the ADHI. What tools and resources did you use that helped? Which ones do you recommend? Has anyone gotten a degree to enhance their knowledge, and if so, what degree? Skills Rusty - Where To Focus Review For Job Hunting?
Dec 02, 2012

I graduated from M-Tec in Jan. 2011 while working a full-time job.  My plan was to keep working, get a part-time MT job until I gained experienced, and then quit my other job and do MT full time.  I sent out tons of resumes but received no replies except for one that expressed fear I would get burned out working 2 jobs.  After that I got discouraged and stopped looking for MT work for over a year.   Now I'm newly motivated (hate my current job) and want to start looking ...

Entry Level Pay
Jun 10, 2011

Hi all, Just a quick question.  In all your years of experience, what would you think would be a fair starting pay (hourly please) at a smaller acute care hospital doing varied types of jobs?  I do a lot of typing for the actual hospital, the two clinics (one inside the hospital and our satellite clinic in another town) and physical therapy.   I do alot of transcription but I also have a lot of other medical records duties as well that I have to balance.  I do ...

Rate Of Pay For Entry In To An EHR
