How much do you make and how long do you work? - ?

I'm not trying to make this a "none of your business" or a "personal" question, just wondering in general, how much is an MT ABLE to make these days? Two years ago, I made $800 per week as an MT and didn't even work quite 40 hours a week. Today, I make around $300 per week and it seems that I am ALWAYS at my computer. I have been applying and testing, but if I can't make more than that and be at my computer less, I really don't want to invest any more time into the training portion just to have to keep quitting jobs and seeking new employment.

going to VR soon so i'm not sure what the future holds. With bonuses and OT i have made up to $30 on occasion.

I make $20-30 per hour too, but I only have enough work for 2-3 hours per day.

Work around 8 hours per day BUT it is back and forth to the computer for around 12 hours per day just to get my 8 in, so seems like I work longer and harder than I actually do.

I take home $2400 a month as an IC, 90% VR for me - work 30 hours a week

When things were good and no VR I could make anywhere between 3000-4000 a month for 40 hours a week. Now with VR....I am struggling to make 2200 a month and working a LOT more hours to do it. Sometimes 12 hours a day. Its sad, very sad.

So if someone has been an MT for 10 years and then moves onto coding, does that make them more valuable to employers? Also do you recommend the Andrews School over the rest? I seem to be spending an awful lot of time in VR documents, so I am confused as to why I am getting paid less for them. Anyone out there notice this? That it takes twice as long to do an op note anymore in ASR what with all the cutting, pasting, standards, going back to check whether or not to delete headings, blah, blah. It used to be a cinch to simply bring in one of my standards and make the appropriate changes according to the audio, but now with ASR, it takes twice as long. I feel like I'm running in place and going nowhere just to make ASR learn something. It's such a waste ...

I have known where this 'profession' was headed for years; even in the late 1990s I knew. I earned the education that I need with both an associate degree and bachelor's degree (bachelor's degree from Big 10 university) and, still, many people view me as an MT, which we can all agree is not good. I quit today. No 2 weeks notice. No anything. "You won't ever be able to work for Nuance again if you do this." That's like saying, "You won't ever be able to hit yourself in the face with a hammer again if you throw it away." There is NO WAY an MT can survive not knowing what they will make week to week. Who can budget like that? They can stick their "compensation plan" up their yin yang. I am free! :) ...

After over a year without an MT job I have decided to turn my degree into a Nursing assistant degree. Not to say the MT jobs aren't out there it is just tough for newer MT's to land them with all of the competition. Employers have the right and the demand to be very picky with everyone vying for the position. How long does it take you to type 600 lines? I am considering taking an at-home position in addition to my in-house transcription position. The minimum line count for this company is 1800 lines a week and I'd like to not have to work more than three days a week for them, which would be 600 lines per day. Well, apparently the office starting having money problems and the doctor called me in to ask me how I count the lines. I told him that I have counting software based on 65 characters with spaces.
