A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
I'm currently working for a small company as an IC. There are too many typists on this account, so we run out quite a bit. I'm looking for supplemental work. I got a position at the local hospital, still waiting on what they are going to offer me (hourly pay). It's only PRN, so I was planning on doing that - get out of the house some, get back with having some patient contact, and still work at home too. I have gone back to college to pursue a nursing degree and Associates Degree. I figure getting my foot in the door at the hospital would be a good thing. After almost a week I hadn't heard anything from the hospital. I called, they said, yes we want you, just waiting on HR. Ok, that's good. I start worrying about if I'm doing the right thing. I have two kids, 11 and 8. I worry about having to find someone to watch them/paying someone to watch them, or if they are sick, I'll have to call in. I don't like to call in, or if there are snow days and school is called out. All of this is going through my head.
I've been home working for 11 years and I've always been readily available for my kids, and that's the way I wanted it, because my mom had to work when I was a kid and she didn't make my school parties and wasn't there to get me off the bus and so on. I also think about if it's worth the gas $. I live about 10-12 miles from this hospital, that's not bad. It's a M-F, no weekends, no holidays. I don't know hourly pay yet. I actually worked with some of these people years ago when I worked at that hospital before I came home to work.
Ok, so a few more days go by and I haven't heard from the hospital still. I come across a job on the job board, at home position doing VR editing. I applied, took test and now will have an interview. This job sounds very interesting to me. Full time, working from home, I've never done an editing job, so something a bit different.
So I'm not sure which route to go. I think the hospital job would be good for experience being with patients, but on the other hand working from home, I won't have to worry about shufflling my kids around. I may sound crazy, but I'm not. I just over analyze everything!
I went back to college because the transcription workforce has changed quite a bit over the past couple of years. I've been a transcriptionist for 16 years. I have always thought about being a nurse, but wanted to be home with my kids while they were little.
Sorry this is so long, but I would appreciate any opinions you all may have.
Thanks.
