Can I get some opinions, please? sm this might be long - MO$

Posted: May 27, 2010

I'm currently working for a small company as an IC.  There are too many typists on this account, so we run out quite a bit.  I'm looking for supplemental work.  I got a position at the local hospital, still waiting on what they are going to offer me (hourly pay).  It's only PRN, so I was planning on doing that - get out of the house some, get back with having some patient contact, and still work at home too.  I have gone back to college to pursue a nursing degree and Associates Degree.  I figure getting my foot in the door at the hospital would be a good thing.  After almost a week I hadn't heard anything from the hospital.  I called, they said, yes we want you, just waiting on HR.  Ok, that's good.  I start worrying about if I'm doing the right thing.  I have two kids, 11 and 8.  I worry about having to find someone to watch them/paying someone to watch them, or if they are sick, I'll have to call in.  I don't like to call in, or if there are snow days and school is called out.  All of this is going through my head.

I've been home working for 11 years and I've always been readily available for my kids, and that's the way I wanted it, because my mom had to work when I was a kid and she didn't make my school parties and wasn't there to get me off the bus and so on.  I also think about if it's worth the gas $.  I live about 10-12 miles from this hospital, that's not bad.  It's a M-F, no weekends, no holidays.  I don't know hourly pay yet.  I actually worked with some of these people years ago when I worked at that hospital before I came home to work.

Ok, so a few more days go by and I haven't heard from the hospital still.  I come across a job on the job board, at home position doing VR editing.  I applied, took test and now will have an interview.  This job sounds very interesting to me.  Full time, working from home, I've never done an editing job, so something a bit different.

So I'm not sure which route to go.  I think the hospital job would be good for experience being with patients, but on the other hand working from home, I won't have to worry about shufflling my kids around.  I may sound crazy, but I'm not.  I just over analyze everything!

I went back to college because the transcription workforce has changed quite a bit over the past couple of years.  I've been a transcriptionist for 16 years.  I have always thought about being a nurse, but wanted to be home with my kids while they were little.

Sorry this is so long, but I would appreciate any opinions you all may have.

Thanks.

This is just my own opinion...

You only have one chance to raise your kids. My brother got into trouble after my mom started working outside the home and wasn't there when he got home from school when he was a teenager. He basically did what he wanted when she was gone for those few hours, and long story short, he is now in federal prison for the third time on a meth conviction with a release year of 2021. My mom has always felt so guilty about that. I have 5 kids (12 to 8 months), and believe me, some days I miss working in an office, but I personally don't want to take a chance of having my kids get into the same trouble as my brother, so I plan to sit here and type at home until they're grown (or we somehow get amazingly rich and I don't have to work anymore, ha ha!!).

Even working at home, though, I still miss class parties, field trips, etc. because of my work hours, and the kids hate that I have to work holidays, even though I'm right here. There's always a trade-off.

Hope that helps!!

Thanks for your opinion. - MO$

I'm really sorry to hear about your brother. I hope that he can get himself better by the time he's released.

I understand where you are coming from. I do have my husband that is here for the kids in the evenings. Actually by the time my 11 year old is 15 or 16, that's when I'm planning on graduating nursing school. So I will be working as a nurse (hopefully) during those teenage years. I'm almost 40 and just don't want to wait until I'm too old to learn something new! I have a hard time right now remembering things! haha!

Thanks again! Five kids, you have your hands full! :)

First, the VR/editing job, plan on making, possibly a lot, less than you do doing transcription. And if you are an employee, you will still have to likely work a set schedule, so those parties might still go unattended.

You don't mention a husband/dad in your scenario so I'm wondering if you have back-up in case you need it. If not, then the benefits and contacts from the hospital may serve you better over the long run.

Yes, you'd have to work out childcare and yes, your kids will have to undergo some change, but it's not the end of the world. You can still be an attentive, involved parent if you work outside the home.

So, I think you're looking at probably equal pay when all things are considered (lower wages for VR/editing or paying childcare from your hourly salary). You'll be home, but likely have to stick to a schedule as opposed to not being able to give hugs/kisses, and lend an ear if you're out of the house. Being at the hospital allows you adult contact and business networking.

And you're going to school too? I remember being such a glutton for punishment :) Glad those days are behind me. Good luck with your choices, it's a great thing to have some!!

Personally I have had a good experience with VR. It really depends on the platform you are working on. It can make or break you in VR. If you are on a good VR platform it is possible to double your line count and it is not as hard on your hands. If you are on a bad VR platform then your line count doesn't really go up that much from what you can type. Find out what VR platform they use. That is really the key.

If it is a good VR platform then that is the job I personally would take so that I could be home.

Good luck!

What do you consider a good VR platform? n/m - Wonders

Heard from HR at the hospital sm - MO$

[ In Reply To ..]
Well I heard from HR today and they are offering me $10/hr a job at the hospital doing receptionist work. I don't know if it's worth the time, gas, and paying daycare to take that position. I'm considering the VR editing position now. Yes, I'm going to school for nursing, something I've always thought about doing, but just didn't because of my kids being so young. Now they are getting a little bigger. I've worked in hospitals before (years ago before I had kids) and really like the atmosphere.
Thank you for your opinion!

Why Does It Take So Long?
Mar 08, 2011

Anyone out there notice this?  That it takes twice as long to do an op note anymore in ASR what with all the cutting, pasting, standards, going back to check whether or not to delete headings, blah, blah.  It used to be a cinch to simply bring in one of my standards and make the appropriate changes according to the audio, but now with ASR, it takes twice as long.  I feel like I'm running in place and going nowhere just to make ASR learn something.  It's such a waste ...

How Long Does It Take To Not Be Known As An MT
Jan 24, 2013

I have known where this 'profession' was headed for years; even in the late 1990s I knew. I earned the education that I need with both an associate degree and bachelor's degree (bachelor's degree from Big 10 university) and, still, many people view me as an MT, which we can all agree is not good. I have experience in my new line of work, and I have worked in that field in the past. How long is it really going to take before people do not view me with all the negative stereoty ...

I quit today. No 2 weeks notice. No anything. "You won't ever be able to work for Nuance again if you do this." After over a year without an MT job I have decided to turn my degree into a Nursing assistant degree. Not to say the MT jobs aren't out there it is just tough for newer MT's to land them with all of the competition. Employers have the right and the demand to be very picky with everyone vying for the position. Good luck to everyone who stays and does well in the MT business but it is time for me to turn my dreams into reality and start making a little green. ...

How Long Does It Take You??....600 Lines...sm
Apr 12, 2010

How long does it take you to type 600 lines?  I am considering taking an at-home position in addition to my in-house transcription position.  The minimum line count for this company is 1800 lines a week and I'd like to not have to work more than three days a week for them, which would be 600 lines per day.  I believe I'd be typing straight into Word, so the only quick-text I'd be using is the Microscoft AutoCorrect.  I would be transcribing clinic notes wi ...
