How many minutes of dictation can you do in an hour/day on average? - Just wondering

Posted: Feb 18, 2010

I was just wondering your best estimate of how many minutes of dictation you can do per hour/day. My manager is calculating that the average MT can do 100 minutes of dictation per day. This seems very low to me since I can usually do at least 20 minutes of dictation per hour with a mix of traditional typing and VR (more typing than VR). Am I just an anomaly?

industry standard is 3:1 ratio - MTSO

140 minutes would be a good target for daily minutes, but there are many variables that then need factored in that is non-productive work such as difficult dictators, demographics, etc.

When I'm MTing, I can use the 3:1 rule but am always pleased when it's 2:1.

I must do 100 minutes in an 8-hour shift. It really takes me 4-5 hours (depending on length, the longer the better) to get the 100 minutes. I've been doing this a long time and I don't really have to look up much so I am pretty quick. I'm pretty experienced and no dictator bothers me (except the lazy American ones). Other girls I work with struggle to get to the 100 in 8 hours, I know.

I average about 160 minutes per 8 hr day. - on average

I think 100 minutes per day is low. The minimum requirement in my department for a level 3 MT is 120 minutes of straight transcription (no VR) per 8-hour shift, I generally do around 130. 100 minutes per day would be considered entry level.

100 min in 8-hour shift is a minimal requirement- If incentive is involved - a level 3 transcriptionist can do 150 minutes or m

When I was in my prime, back in the 90s when MT'ing was lucrative, I transcribed 1800 to 2000 lines per day at 150 to 160+ minutes.

Thanks for the replies! - Just wondering

My manager was using this 100 minutes per day of dictation as a gauge in which to hire MTs to staff our accounts. No wonder we are usually running out of work!

Call me crazy, but 100 minutes in 8 hours sounds like alot. My company only requires about 60 minutes/8 hr shift. Of course my company also places intraoperative photographs usually with captions and in our op notes, so there is a lot more involved than your standard dictation.

How Does A Person Figure How Many Minutes In An Hour Of Dictation Can Do
Jan 19, 2010

I am putting in for a proofing/transcribing job with a company but i need to also write down what i need for wages by how many minutes of dictation i can do.  How do i do this?  I have never kept track of minutes/hour and how much i actually do.  It has always been 8-9 cents/line.  She says an average is 20 minutes of dictation/hour then divide by 60 and that is what i would get paid per minute anywhere between her range she has.  Does anyone know how to figure this out. ...

I have been struggling to reach my line counts at a certain company for a while now. I thought it was me. I've been working really hard to get faster and use more shortcuts, etc. I just looked at my stats and I did 38 minutes of dictation per hour but only ended up with 160 LPH? How is that even possible? I haven't had any dictations today with a lot of dead air or anything like that. I've done 200+ minutes of dictation today and have 1400 lines to show for it. I'm just wond ...

Average Per Hour With 0.75 Or 0.375 Versus $12.00 Per Hour
Mar 31, 2014

My transcription job was always paid by the hour. I was laid off and they recently offered me a temp position with them making $12.00 an hour.  I was also offered a positon that pays 7.5 and 3.5 cpl.  The $12.00 is employee status for a small local company I worked for over 9 years.  The other is an IC position.  Do you think I would make more with the $12.00 an hour or the per line production rate?  I have never done production by line work so I'm not sur ...

Required To Do At Least 15 Minutes Of Audio Per Hour
May 17, 2012

I recently started with a new company where I am paid per minute. I am required to do at least 15 minutes of audio per hour while in training and then at least 20 minutes of audio per hour after that point as the minimum requirements. The account that I am on has dictations that are mostly 1 minute or less, fast talkers and pulling in templates. Do you think that these minimums are attainable? I know that I can do that many audio minutes on average, but I'm not used to being paid by the aud ...

What Is AVERAGE Line Count Per Hour For An MT To Type
Aug 17, 2013

Just wondering, what is an Average line count per hour for an MT?  I worked in a pathology office for almost 5 years, but we never kept count of lines per hour.  When we pulled an audit once, we were only typing about 700-800 a day between myself and the lady I worked with.  I had to pull all the slides for the doctor, help with grossing, assist in frozen sections, etc.  I was hired for a job where they want me to type 135 lines per hour, that's ...
