How many minutes should you be able to transcribe per hour? - me

Posted: Jan 18, 2011

An curious as I just started a job that runs on minutes.  The supervisor wants me to get up to 140 minutes a day transcribed in 8 hours.  About how many lines an hour would that be?  Will that be easy?  TIA

The standard "minutes per hour" is 15 dictated minutes, which works out to 120 minutes in 8 hours, so your supervisor wants you to be above the standard at about 17-18 minutes per hour.

If you want to fulfill your requirement of so and so minutes than take the easy files transcribed through VRS and then proofread them

3:1 ratio - mt2long

All things being equal (which they never are), you should be able to do 20 minutes of dictation an hour.

There is a 3:1 ratio of talk to text. So they've given you a leeway and 140 minutes should be done fairly handily.

Disagree. Rate has always been 4:1. Have been in this - business for long time and 4:1 is standard. nm

Whatever it was, since computer platforms, then expanders, - that has changed. Big time. NM

We should not be paid less because of expanders. It is - a tool. Like one posted before, a Dr. SM

used to put his ear to your chest to listen to your heart. Now they use stethiscopes but they dont charge less because they now use that tool. Platforms and expanders have been around as long as I have been working and that still doesnt negate a 4:1 rate for minute paid transcription.
If they invented a stethoscope that allowed a doc to - process 2 patients at once,

it'd sure make a difference. The analogy is not true as it stands. When I entered this field, a friend was making over $60 ,000 per year base salary without bonuses, holiday pay, or overtime. With expander, she'd be making over $100,000 without bonuses. With expander and templates, and sophisticated platform, it'd probably be closer to $150,000 per year, perhaps well above. She's very good.

This while hospitals are having to lay off staff and cut back on supplies and equipment purchases needed for patient care because of budget problems. Uhuh.

LOL - mt2long

Just stating what has been written in books, experienced and taught by myself to many MTs over decades. If your experience is different, that's fine.

The industry standard has been 3:1 as far back as the early 70s when I got into the business.

As the poster below states, as technology has changed so has the general rule of thumb. On some accounts I can do 2:1 ratio, some 4:1 ratio, but the AVERAGE always seems to come back to being a 3:1 ratio.

Either way, the question was regarding 140 minutes of dictation a day and the poster should be able to do that.

Been in this business a long time as well - RLee

I was always told to use the 3:1 ratio and based on that and my typing skills it has proven to be fairly accurate. Of course there are exceptions with regards to time spent looking up info and difficult dictators.

I believe it is 2:1 now taking into consideration expanders. - NKC

And VR ratio would be even closer.

being new to this, would either of you clarify what 3:1,4:1 etc. means. Are you speaking - pssnby

in terms of lines per minute or minutes per hour?..sorry if it sounds like a silly question. Just wondered.

ratios - okay

[ In Reply To ..]
20 minutes in an hour 3:1

30 minutes in an hour 2:1 (and that is NOT industry standard unless you have PERFECT dictators)

15 minutes in an hour 4:1

Dictated minute - RLee

[ In Reply To ..]
If a dictation is 15 minutes long, it would normally take you 45 minutes to type depending on dictator and other circumstances, which would make it a 3:1 ratio.

Simple answer - sm

If someone is saying you should be following a 3:1 ratio for transcription, basically it means, for every 3 minutes you should be able to type 1 minute of dictation; same would go for a 4:1 ratio or 2:1 ratio.

real time:dictation time
Thanks...just wanted to know if I'm on track with the norm, but I - pssnby

I'm sure my production would be even better if I didn't have to work from a pool where you never know what you are gonna get. I think it is the worst idea anyone could have come up with.

Depends on the doctors (clear or ESL) and type of work, and if you have to look up stuff, doctors names, addresses, drug names, etc. At first no, I don't see it happening. Doing that every day, no don't see it happening, get burned out. I can do that in a day but not day after day (may 2 days a week). I have doctors that are 2:1, 3:1 and 5:1. So it varies with the doctor and the report. I have one doctor who does 1 to 2 mins reports, takes me 5 mins to type 1 min of his, no clue why, I do better with longer reports 3 mins and up for some reason, really hate those short ones. So one doctor I can do 30 mins in an hour, 2 others about 20 mins a hour, the other 10-16 mins an hour. Too many variables to guarantee that you can do 17.5 mins every hour every day for 8 hours a day. I am sure there are those here that do this but I would not be able to and keep up with my kids stuff without going insane and sleeping less than I do presently.

How Many Minutes Of Dictation Can You Do In An Hour/day On Average?
Feb 18, 2010

I was just wondering your best estimate of how many minutes of dictation you can do per hour/day. My manager is calculating that the average MT can do 100 minutes of dictation per day. This seems very low to me since I can usually do at least 20 minutes of dictation per hour with a mix of traditional typing and VR (more typing than VR). Am I just an anomaly? ...

Required To Do At Least 15 Minutes Of Audio Per Hour
May 17, 2012

I recently started with a new company where I am paid per minute. I am required to do at least 15 minutes of audio per hour while in training and then at least 20 minutes of audio per hour after that point as the minimum requirements. The account that I am on has dictations that are mostly 1 minute or less, fast talkers and pulling in templates. Do you think that these minimums are attainable? I know that I can do that many audio minutes on average, but I'm not used to being paid by the aud ...

How Does A Person Figure How Many Minutes In An Hour Of Dictation Can Do
Jan 19, 2010

I am putting in for a proofing/transcribing job with a company but i need to also write down what i need for wages by how many minutes of dictation i can do.  How do i do this?  I have never kept track of minutes/hour and how much i actually do.  It has always been 8-9 cents/line.  She says an average is 20 minutes of dictation/hour then divide by 60 and that is what i would get paid per minute anywhere between her range she has.  Does anyone know how to figure this out. ...

Line Counts - 38 Minutes Of Dictation Per Hour But Only Ended Up With 160 LPH?
Dec 09, 2011

I have been struggling to reach my line counts at a certain company for a while now. I thought it was me. I've been working really hard to get faster and use more shortcuts, etc. I just looked at my stats and I did 38 minutes of dictation per hour but only ended up with 160 LPH? How is that even possible? I haven't had any dictations today with a lot of dead air or anything like that. I've done 200+ minutes of dictation today and have 1400 lines to show for it. Average Per Hour With 0.75 Or 0.375 Versus $12.00 Per Hour
Mar 31, 2014

My transcription job was always paid by the hour. I was laid off and they recently offered me a temp position with them making $12.00 an hour.  I was also offered a positon that pays 7.5 and 3.5 cpl.  The $12.00 is employee status for a small local company I worked for over 9 years.  The other is an IC position.  Do you think I would make more with the $12.00 an hour or the per line production rate?  I have never done production by line work so I'm not sur ...

Did Anyone See 60 Minutes?
May 11, 2011

There was a story on the people who lost their jobs. They have COBRA, but there are no jobs, unemployment pays $200/week or so, and COBRA insurance costs $1600/month (I can't remember the exact amount). So they are jobless, losing their homes because they can't pay their mortgages, moving in with other family members, who also have lost their jobs, and of course have no medical insurance.  My heart went out to one woman when she just cried out that she didn't know where they ...

73 freakin' lines because of the way the dictator did.  Very slow, lots of stopping and dead air, repeating himself.  In fact, he dictated the Impression 5 times and would say correction and start over.  He even had the nerve to laugh and snicker and said "to start over again".  Wish I could reach through the computer, down all lines to wherever the **** this jerk is and rip his tonsils out by hand without anesthesia.
