How long do I wait? - OlderMT

I lost my IC MT job in January. The MTSO lost the account I was working on. They are trying to obtain another account and when they do I will be called back to work. In the meantime I have been looking around and this past month I have been applying for part-time IC work. I could use the paycheck! I contacted my previous MTSO and they have nothing yet. I am not finding any work at all. I'm feeling anxious. So, I think I need to be more flexible in what jobs I am looking at and consider 2nd shift (ugh), full-time work or work as an employee. But I feel that if I take another job, that's about the time I would get called back to work for my former MTSO which is what I really want. How long should I wait for a call that may never come? Am I being unreasonable to hope that I will get called? Feeling very stuck right now. It's hard to move forward. It's hard to stay where I am at. Thanks for listening.

I would take another job, then if your IC job comes back, leave the other one if you really feel you need to be IC.

My opinion is that you are less likely to be let go as an employee, though. It's more complicated than IC for the MTSO. With employee, The MTSO has to figure possibly paying unemployment, severance pay, wrongful termination, etc., if they let you go. They're more likely to hesitate before firing/laying off.

As employee, you may not have as much flexibility as IC, but in the MTSOs eyes, that's better for them, they can more hold you to the hours you promise, so you're more valuable.

I worked as an IC for years. I was not let go, but I was supposed to be part time--she had me pulling 200-300 minutes A DAY five days a week and 200-300 over the weekend. If you asked for less work, you'd get NO work. I did this because I thought it would be more flexible than having a set schedule by a larger company.

Flash forward and while I'm not thrilled to be working on 2nd shift, I don't have to worry about being called at 6 a.m. for a stat someone forgot to assign or someone didn't type, I don't have to be told to "take your laptop with you" whenever I was on vacation as "you are the ONLY one that knows this account" and stuff like that. I stayed TOO long and honestly if your former company comes back, at least you'll be able to know if the grass is greener or not.

The scary thing is my former company still wants me back and she emails at least monthly to try to get me to come back.

I think you just answered your own question by saying, "a call that may never come."

The very first thing you should do is apply for unemployment. In my state there is a 1-week waiting period, so you should definitely apply the very day that you know you are laid off. The income is only about 50% of what you made during the highest 3 months of the last 5 quarters, but it is better than nothing. You can apply online too.

Having said that, you do need to expand your search. Hopefully, the UE income will allow you a little time to be picky, but you definitely need to get on the ball and do some testing.

The same thing happened to me. It took 4 months for the company to call me to work again. I had started receiving UE. I had another job that I absolutely hated and was making nearly half of what I did before but like you said, what if they do not call???? Another way to look at it is - what if you found a job you liked better and made more money? Maybe not, but also maybe so. And if not, if your company calls you, you can always quit the job you have recently taken.

In this business, the name of the game is looking out for number one - YOU. I wish you good luck. Tough spot to be in.

I hate to tell you this, but a lot of times companies will tell you they will hire you back and they have no intention of ever doing so. It's a chicken way of dealing with people you're laying off.

Find a job. Do you. Take care of what you need to take care of today. IF and when your old company calls you, then worry about making a decision. Right now, though, you can't eat promises.

I was in this exact position 4 years ago. She was a great MTSO to work for, but due to VR had lost several accounts. I had 3 accounts and 2 were lost. I had work but it was such a small amount I was in deep trouble financially. She kept promising that they were working on new accounts, but after 3 months I went to work full time for an MTSO. Drawbacks: You have a definite schedule to follow, less flexibility. Positives: You actually have days off and vacation time. Depending on your situation, it can work. I don't work for either of the big 2 MTSOs but with their buying frenzy I am afraid they will buy out my company. For now it works. Good luck in your decision.

I am on a troublesome account that is fairly new to the company and is a mix of VR and straight transcripiton. When it first started, there was plenty of work. All that work has now dried up. Am a current Mt looking to get into coding, specifically looking at Andrews. I am not familiar with coding at all, so this may be a dumb question to those familiar with it - but here goes! Would it make more sense to wait until the implementation of ICD-10 to invest in the courses or is this a mute point pretty much? Oh the irony of this company. 2 lines per hour average for the last week. Looks like they messed up the ASR statistics and the other statistics report. Wait for it, they will send an apology email and make some sorry excuse. Does anyone actually look at this reports or find any sort of purpose? ...
