Then was SHOCKED to see $26 deducted from my pay check the following pay day, labeled on my stub "candy and cookie tower". Thanks for the "prize", Medquist. (rolling eyes)

OMG Really!!? The nerve!! I suggested that they send us equalizers or sound boosters so we can make the production lines. One year we got a really crappy mouse pad. Like we don't have a gazillion already.

It is crazy how some people will always find something to complain about. As a former MTSO, I learned it was better to send nothing at all then to be criticized for trying to be nice.

Is your comment directed at me? Are you faulting me for complaining about paying for my own prize? See my post below - I'm on FOOD STAMPS. I'm a SINGLE MOM. I would rather win nothing than to win a prize I have to pay for out of my tiny little check.

Once, I got a $10 gift card for Cracker Barrel. If I lived within a thousand miles of a Cracker Barrel, liked that kind of thing, $10 was enough to buy anything they sold and didn't have Crohn's disease, I would have used it LOL.

The only other thing I ever won was a tube of generic lip balm in a stick that said Medquist on it attached to a key chain. At least I could use that, though since it was made in China I likely got a serious dose of cadmium.

One of my friends in the company a long time ago won a basket of sugary preserves. That would have been nice, had she not been diabetic.

The best gift ever was one they gave my mom when she was working for MQ. It was a cheap plastic clock that broke in the mail. It only had five black bars. One each for 3, 6 and 9 and two at the top for noon/midnight with a thin space of about 2 minutes between them. Whenever 11:59 rolled around we'd joke it was time to take a 2 minute nap and get back to work at 12:01.

On the other hand, a lot of people win gifts they do enjoy. So they don't get it wrong every time, just a lot of the time. I just think variety is the key when you have so many employees and you regard them only as numbers on a spread sheet, so you don't really know what they want. People should get a choice in what they get. That would be nice.

The biggest issue, however, is employee happiness. If you're happy with the job, the gift will be a reminder that the company cares. If you're not happy with the company, then a plastic key chain ChapStick is a poor substitute for your shattered dreams or food for your kids;)

a Tiffany bracelet (sold it for $100 to a friend), won a year subscription to a website for MTs, won a $10 walmart gift card. All my prizes were worth over $400 and then you have to pay the taxes on them out of your paycheck.

I had to work 3 hours just to pay for my cookies and candy - I can't wrap my mind around how much equalizers and sound boosters would cost me, LOL. I'm on Food Stamps already ... a prize like that is likely to put me in the homeless shelter.

It even stated on the contest entry forms that the winner has to pay taxes on the prize value and that it would be deducted from the following paycheck.

If she didnt want to pay the taxes, she didn't have to enter the contest and left the prize for someone who would not be complaining about it.

$26 in TAXES for a small candy and cookie tower? You're kidding, right? In order for that to happen the cookie and candy tower would've had to be worth several hundred dollars. I don't think so.

During MT week, employee names are RANDOMLY drawn and your name just appears on a list of "winners". I never entered anything. I would've GLADLY given that prize to someone willing to pay for it - like I said, I worked for 3 SOLID HOURS to pay for those goodies.

No thanks ... the next "prize" I win from MModal will be refused at the door.

$26 is a lot of money regardless if it was for the cost of the item or the taxes for the item, especially if she didn't ASK to be entered into the drawing. By default, during MT week if you are an MT or MME with MModal (Medquist) you are automatically entered in the drawing whether you want to be or not.

I totally get it, I'm a single mom too and I would *never* opt to spend $26 of the pay check I slave for on cookies and candy. That $26 would pay HALF of my electric bill. For a single mom who is the primary income earner, $26 out of your check for cookies and candy could be a huge unexpected surprise.

Most "giveaways" have ways to *opt out* for people who don't want to be considered for a prize. Because we all earn so little money, there are probably lots of us who can't afford to pay the cost of a prize, or the taxes on a prize. I would happily opt out of a prize I had to budget money for out of my check - to not give us that choice doesn't seem right.

I would love nothing more than to win a nice prize too ... trouble is, I struggle to pay my rent every single month on what I'm paid. So as much as I would like to win a couple of boxes of cookies and candy from the company I slave for, it "pleases" me to pay my bills even more.

Good grief. I did not change the way I edit. It so depends on how many commas they think you should have.
