Wait on ICD-10 before enrolling in school? - boosa

Posted: Dec 28, 2011

Am a current Mt looking to get into coding, specifically looking at Andrews.  I am not familiar with coding at all, so this may be a dumb question to those familiar with it - but here goes! Would it make more sense to wait until the implementation of ICD-10 to invest in the courses or is this a mute point pretty much?  In other words, would it be easier to "transition" from 9 to 10 or start fresh with 10?  Hope this makes sense and TIA for any input.

The best coders with the most job options are going to know both ICD-9 and ICD-10 - Coder

Lots of current coders are going into a panic and quitting or retiring early because they think they can't do ICD-10 when it starts in 2013. That will mean more jobs for those who realize it really isn't that hard. You need to know ICD-9-CM too though, because you're going to be dealing with charts including both for years to come. I would not take a course that was only ICD-10. You will be totally confused when you get out of class and into the real world of coding.

Do not wait on ICD-10 - sm

Waiting makes no sense! Did someone tell you this or did yo see it somewhere? I would love to know where it is coming from.

The only benefit to waiting will be for current coders and students. It will improve the job market and salaries for them, not for those who wait.

As someone noted, you will need to know both 9 and 10. If you do not know 9, how will you be able to deal with old records and coded data from the past? Schools will still be exposing students to 9 for a while to come.

These code sets are not two completely different concepts. What you learn about usng 9 will help with or even apply to 10.

Students often think the goal in learning coding is to memorize a lot of numbers. It isn't. The goal is to USE the code book to find what you need and to learn to identify what you need to code in medical documentation. This is pretty much the same.

Another reason not to wait is that you will lose productive earning time. If you begin now, you will finish in time to get certified and get settled in a job. Many employers will be augmenting their staff to compensate for the increased time that 10 will require. You will, I think, be better off entering the job market before the switch than during or after it.

Keep in mind that CPT HCCS coding is not changing. The move to ICD 10 is not changing everything about coding . . . it is just changing part of it. These changes are more difficult for institutions than for coders.

Thank you so much...sm - boosa

Great responses. No one has specifically fed me this information - I just wasn't sure what the thinking out there was as I am not familiar with coding at all and didn't know the extent of the "changes." It makes perfect sense that you would need to know both. Thanks again for clarifying! Am leaning towards Andrews and looking forward to getting started in this field asap! :)

I Am Enrolling In The Andrew's School Next Week And Am Getting Nervous
Jan 24, 2011

Hi. My name is Suzanne and I am enrolling in the Andrew's School for Medical Coding next week, on Tuesday February 1, 2001 and am getting nervous. I am a medical transcriptionist and I want to know if any thing I have done in the last 10 years, such as medical terminology and anatomy, will help me. Of course I will take that part of the course, but I want to know if that will help. Also, I am most nervous about deciphering the codes. I guess what I am asking is how do I know I will be a goo ...

Something To Think About Before Enrolling
May 14, 2010

For those of you currently thinking about making the leap from MT to coding, please think about this before investing in a coding education right now.  ICD10 is coming in a couple short years, implementation in 2013.  Facilities are now gearing up to retain their current coding staff beginning next year (mandatory). So you are being taught ICD 9 if you go to school now, but if it takes you 2 years to complete your education, then right when you finish, ICD9 will be a thing of the past ...

Thinking Of Enrolling For BIlling/Coding But I Have Questions.
Jun 12, 2014

I am thinking of starting the billing/coding courses at my community college in August. It will take me less than a year since I have courses that will transfer from my MT certification. I hear that with ICD10 it is a good field to go into. What is the reality? When I became an MT last year I didn't ask these question to people who actually worked in the field and now I am sorely disappointed with my pay and I don't think I can stick it out an Nuance to get the 2 or more years experien ...

Has Anyone Ever Gone Through Allied School For Coding? Other School Recommendations?
Jun 24, 2014

I was wondering if anyone has ever gone through Allied School in California for billing & coding.  If so, how was your experience?  Were you able to find work in coding after finishing the course and getting your certification?  I have been a medical transcriptionist for the past 10-11 years and am now looking at getting into coding.  My best friend and I are going to take a course together.   If you wouldn't recommend Allied as a school, who would you reco ...

Coding School - Considering Going To A School
Sep 22, 2011

I am an MT who is considering going to school for coding.  I am thinking about taking the course through Andrews and will probably start next year because I will have to save up some of the money.  I am wondering if you think coding may eventually go the way of medical transcription and be outsourced to India.  I do not think it will so I just wanted to get the opinions of other coders.  I realize it will be a hard course but I think it will be worth the effort.  Any thoughts would be appre ...

How long do you wait after you apply and test before you email and/or contact the recruiter?  The way I see it, I have spent at least a couple of hours on their tests and at the very least deserve an email within a few days either way.  Maybe times have changed.
