I have been doing transcription for 10 1/2 years. I have started to make less money in the last 2 years. I use word expanders and try not to spend too much time on one report, but still my production is about the same. My job has requested that our quotas increase to as much as 150 minutes a day. I can tell the MT field is halting. I have to consider going back to school. Now I am wondering what major to take in college. :). Any positive suggestions appreciated. :)

I felt exactly the same way and decided to jump ship before it truely sank. I have wanted to go to nursing for quite awhile now, this was the kick in the butt I needed to get out the door. Half way through my LPN year and no regrets! Funny, everytime I start to think that my transcription job is going well and how much easier it would be to drop school and just type, I have a night of NJA so I guess someone is telling me to keep at it!

I finished my Bachelor's back in May but only took a class or 2 at a time because I only needed a few credits.

I'd love to go back and do the 2nd degree nursing program but I cannot for the life of me figure out how I would work, go to clinicals during the day and take care of 3 kids (divorced) and a home I'm trying to sell all at the same time. I feel so stuck.

Those of you going back to school, are you working at night so you can go to school during the day? I can't imagine I'd be able to keep that up for very long :(

Last spring I took two classes, one online and one night class, and worked during the day. This fall I am taking four classes during the day and I work afternoons/evenings and sometimes weekends if I fall behind (I'm IC, so flexible there). I have three kids in school and two go to a babysitter while I'm at campus. I work hard to do well in my classes and I'm pretty worn out from juggling everything. Like the last poster I have a day when work is abundant and I think it would be easier just to work and not go to school and then I have a day like today when work is low or I get stuck doing low-pay VR work and it wakes me up and reminds me that I just have to keep going!

the problem with DQS disconnecting and slow/no downloading, etc, is actually their problem and not our internet problem??? At least 5 times a night DQS either disconnects me or I have to wait for my jobs to show up, all the while I'm able to connect to the internet. ...

I HATE that I am tied to my office just waiting for work to come in on two different companies. MY VENT TODAY: I hate QA, I hate my job. My pay is HALF of what it was 15 years ago and I get picked and PICKED AND HOUNDED to death on meaningless garbage in a report. I type a lot of crap, but just had the worst doc I think I ever had. Had 11 QA markers so I sent it to QA thinking they might actually LIKE getting some work since they are about to be history. Anyways, this bi*ch marked 2 CRITICAL ERRORS and did an audit on it (which was still 96.5% in spite of everything I am glad to say). QA you wonder why we have such a bad attitude? I spend a lot of time typing for a huge university hospital clinic with no ADT. Have to type in all patient information. Almost every report is a LETTER. Referring physician has to be typed into the ADT. Then the letter recipient information has to be typed in and lo and behold have to re-type it into the cc list for the doc to get a copy of the letter. I wonder why I can't run a decent line count? Don't you just hate it when you've got a dictation that is so fraught with static, and it sounds like the dictator is 100 miles away from the phone, but you actually can make out the words, just barely, and you'd love to leave all blanks because it's such a chore to hear any of it, but you can't, of course, because you can make it out? I have been at Nuance 4 months and don't know how I am going to go through another week there. I am to the point of "Ugh do I really have to work tonight". They fail you on audits for the stupist of things, nothing below 97 for me, but there are so many CPs with different rules. I've been an MT since 2000. Each year I see my pay go down. I've been with 2 big MT companies now and it seems like they are very similar in regard to the fact that they like to screw over their MTs.
