Do you think it's wrong for schools to keep teaching MT? - notright

Posted: Jul 27, 2013

MTEC stopped teaching medical transcription, and I think that was very honest of them. No need to keep teaching people how to do a job that's almost obsolete. Do you think it's wrong for schools to keep teaching MT?

Yes, especially when the tuition is outrageously expensive. - The cost of one course was over $30K

Yes, absolutely - Leaving MT

MTEC stopped teaching it, and my local technical college dropped it as well (long before MTEC stopped teaching it). Kaplan University teaches it as an "associates's degree" for $371 a credit hour. One needs 90 credits to complete the degree. That comes out to over $30K. What really stinks about this is that most for-profit students take out federal loans or have Pell grants, and it burns me up that any Pell grant money at all is going towards a $30K worthless degree because in reality it is the taxpayers footing that bill.

wish andrews would stop teaching it also - ridiculous

[ In Reply To ..]
I think its horrible that its taught anywhere.

Maybe this is a way to bring MT as a whole to public's - attention: the fact that schools teach it.

Someone might find it an easy story to research, and expose these scam schools. And while researching what is wrong with teaching it, and why the industry is so dishonest, MTSOs might end up getting exposed, as well. Going into the subject through this back door might be what finally works.
as long as they are in actuality teaching it, it is not a scam. - scam would be taking your money for nothing. sm

It's really not their job to inform about job availability or anything past what they have to sell, the education. It's not evey their obligation to place you, that is a bonus and an indicator of school quality, ethics.

Before you trash me - I agree they need to stop teaching it. But they won't until attendance lowers to the point of it not paying for itself.

If they are there teaching the class that is not a scam. If you sign up without doing some of your own exploration into the field, oh well. Now, if you sign up and all you get is a pack of flash cards in the mail...that would be a scam.
But they are taking money for nothing, because the - "career" is going extinct. nm

Exactly. It isn't illegal but it is absolutely unethical. - nm

you are not paying for nothing, you are paying them to teach you. - it ends there. Did they show up and teach?
[ In Reply To ..]
They did not say pay me I'll give you a job and show you how.

make sense?? just trying to clarify.

Yes. There's no future in MT, and by teaching it, - their students are being cheated. N/M

I have to say that it is not only MT that is being affected. Go to the AAPC coding forum or any other coding discussion group outside of MT Stars and you will find out how many people spent money on coding programs and cannot find jobs. That field is flooded with newbies just as MT is at the current time. That is not the fault of the school, many of them are well respected programs. I attended one of them and wish I had not. I was laid off from my on site MT job but they are rethinking that and beginning to bring it back beginning with one specialty area. I have been in another position but was asked to come back. I don't think MT is dead for experienced people. Would I tell anyone to pursue it as a career - never. However, I have done that for years; I've known stay at home moms who thought they could do it and I always told them the reality of the job. None of the schools are holding guns to people's heads making them do what they do. My local community college dropped their MT program years ago for many reasons, one of them being that not everyone has the aptitude for this job. Contracts are entered in good faith. People in all walks of life can't find jobs in their chosen field, that's the reality of today's job market.

that's so sad about coding. the button to push seems to be the work at home thing - to get people to ante up and fold. sad.NM

Nothing "sad" about coding. - And coding is not a WAHM opportunity.

There are lots of unhappy would-be coders who cannot get jobs. Most of them do not have the required qualifications. Many are just unemployable people-they would be unable to get a job in any field.

I have seen people who have disabling mental and physical illnesses, work histories that would astound you, and criminal records take coding. I have seen applications from allegedly certified coders whose credentials cannot be verified. I have seen even more whose applications border on illiterate and more than one who showed up for an interview and actually was functionally illiterate.

You have to market yourself to get a coding job, just like everybody else. I think MTs have become so used to getting an offer just for passing a test that they think that is the norm. Which it is not.

I know someone who just advertised for 5 coders, but only 1 applicant was qualified. Some of them truly did not have the ability to code. Some were just unable to communicate it in an application. Others demonstrated inappropriate interpersonal skills or were unkempt and stinky.

Well, here's a thought... - Leaving MT

If schools stopped teaching MT, then there would be no more desperate students willing to work for anything just to get their foot in the door for that precious work-at-home job at which they were told they would make $40K a year. Then perhaps the big, bad MTSOs would have no where else to turn for MTs except offshore, and as a result of that, those facilities that flat out do not want their dictation transcribed offshore (more than a few, I bet) would start to bring it all back in house and people would get trained on the job like in the past. AHDI would change their name again to accommodate all the changes (just had to throw that in there), and we would all live happily ever after.

No kidding. Interesting. And yes, its unethical to keep taking - money for MT courses. nm

As a current student, I just wanted to say thank you to the posters here!!!

I have been reading these threads off and on, somewhat cautiously, since I started school last winter, but this one finally helped me to see the light. I was planning to use work as a CMT as a stepping stone into RN, but not long after I started school we got word that they would no longer be teaching students. My gut said it was a sign to abandon ship, but when I tried asking around about it everyone was safely toeing the company line about it not meaning anything about the industry, it was just a change of focus for MTec. Hmmmmm.

I have stuck it out these many months, hoping it was mostly a few disgruntled MTs posting here, but it's increasingly clear that this is not the case. You awesome MTs have cited REAL examples of issues with companies/hours/accounts/expectations, not just run of the mill griping. I sincerely appreciate it. It has made evaluating my situation so much easier.

Despite my high GPA in my course thus far, I've decided to scrap it and just dive into the RN program now. I've lost the time and money, but without your help I would still be under the impression that I could get decent pay for hard work within a few months of graduating.

I do hope you all find something that fulfills you. - A grateful student

Good luck to you! - notright

I think you're making a great choice with RN. MT is on its way out. I'm glad you were able to get out. Good luck on your studies!

Good luck! - Leaving MT

It takes a lot of guts and really objective thinking to make a decision like that. You probably learned a lot of good stuff already in your program, and it will serve you very well with your future endeavor. I am about to graduate from a surgical technology program, and I had a definite advantage academically just from what I had learned with my MT training and what little time I have under my belt doing MT.

"Teaching" Practitioners To Dictate.
Nov 28, 2010

I strongly think that there should be a branch of the AMA that "polices" a doctor's/PA/FNP, etc. dictation.  I think that that should be REQUIRED to take a yearly refresher course on dictation.  I've just done 3 reports where the doctor was talking so fast that the vital signs all had to be left blank.  That is absolutely ridiculous.  There is no excuse for it.  If these people are smart enough to practice medicine, they should be responsible enough to dic ...

Coding Schools - Where Did YOU Go?

Okay, here we go again.....if anyone has attended a coding school in the last year, is attending a coding school, could you please post your thoughts (was it worth the money, quality, etc)?  I know several people are still on the fence as to whether to pay the large sum to go to a private school (Andrews, DeVry) or attend community colleges in preparation to take their credentials in coding.  I've been reading posts saying the education from all is basically the same, of course it ...

Licensed Schools
Aug 10, 2012

I learned from someone who found out the hard way that it's important to make sure whatever school you go to is licensed by their state. The information is supposed to be displayed on their website and any other catalogs or ads. If not, there may be a problem. The school in question would tell everyone their state didn't require a license. It turned out that the school kept moving not only from state to state, but from country to country and the state they had been living in did requir ...

Coding Schools - Andrews

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search. Online Schools For Transcription
