Money? ROFLMFAO - CanadianMT

The top 0.5% makes good money. The rest are working 80 hours a week just to keep from being laid off (and it still happens). I worked in the industry from 1985 until 2005 and got laid off 7 times. There is no job security and employers burn you out even worse than as an MT. The skills you use on the current job are irrelevant in any other job so you are constantly having to upgrade while working your 60-80 hours a week. I would take even MT over that life.
Even if you get a job that pays a decent amount, it rarely lasts for more than 1-1/2 years and then you use all your savings to retrain because the market has changed.
That is EXACTLY how it is. - sm

Not only do they offshore, but they bring Indians HERE in person because they work cheap and 24-hours a day.
Computer science without a doubt - sm

I was in this position and asking myself this question a few years ago. I went back to school and got my degree in HIM. I am now a RHIT, but the only job I can get is a medical records clerk and I'm making 13 bucks an hour which is hard to live off. I wish I would've gotten my BS in computer science - so many jobs out there in this field with excellent pay.
Computer science is largely going offshore now too. There are - just me

jobs available, but I don't know how secure they will be. I know someone who just graduated from one of those expensive tech schools (ITT Tech I think) and she has not been able to get a job. I would go the HIM route or practice management, or something similar with maybe a minor in IT.
Question: Do you mean a 2 or 4 year degree? - Makes a difference

HIM is the most practical, easiest to achieve the best job opportunities -- especially you are female and not still 12. It will seem familiar to you and you can use your background to good advantage. This field is expanding rapidly right now with the move to EHRs, information systems, data analysis, and the emphasis on security and privacy. Technology is changing the field.
If you are interested in CS and IT, that is great, because they form an important part of HIM today and will become more so in the future. HIM programs now include some courses in that. Some programs offer more than others. A few, like the one at Western Governors University, are focused on it, offering both HIA and IT in a mix that qualifies you for the RHIA, coding certifications, and a number of computer certifications, maximizing your abilities and chances of getting a job.
An RHIA in informatics, like WGU, leads into advanced degrees in informatics and healthcare administration.
I would strongly consider WGU because you can complete it in about 3 years. That is about the same as an RHIT program.
I do not recommend 2-year RHIT programs because jobs are becoming more limited for them. The growth of online RHIA programs is producing more 4-year graduates, who then go on to online graduate programs. The educational expectations in HIA are becoming higher. At the same time, EHRs are eliminating jobs that RHITs could do, leaving them with limited opportunities.
AHIMA has a career map online. They also have an article this month about "HIM's Evolving Workforce." You should look at those to get a realistic view of the field. It isn't a records room anymore.
I should also point out that those jobs are very difficult to offshore. They involve too much on-site activity.
None of the above - CanadianMT

I already have credentials in both computer science and information technology. Those jobs shipped overseas a long time ago, even the minimum wage call centre jobs are gone.
If I were starting out, I would get a trade...something working with my hands that cannot be shipped overseas. I'd consider electrician, but plumber, carpenter, etc. works too. Apparently, masonry is almost a lost art and those with the skills are in great demand where there are historical buildings needing repair.
Does a Health Information Technology Degree Program that also includes ICD-9 coding, etc., put you in a better career position than just learning Coding alone? ...
I read that Medmedx supplies computers but you can only have Cable or DSL connection.
I live in an area where I cannot get cable or DSL. I have a wireless connection.
My question is, do they allow you to use our own computers?
Thanks for your time and have a great day? ...
The reason I ask this question is for my internet I have a USB modem. Do the computers supplied by Q have any extra USB ports so I can plug my Verizon in there?
Thanks! ...
I am in the process of transitioning jobs and will be going from a company-provided computer to my own. Any suggestions on what software programs are needed, virus protection, word expanders, line counting, and hardware like foot pedal? The hospital I am looking into will be using Microsoft Word. Any comments on whether this is a good program or not to transcribe on? Any tips? I have been with the same company for 15 years, so have been out of the loop and need ...
Supervisor is harping to get our "availability" filled out on Schedule Source as we get ready to start the swamp board. Maybe it will clear up after coffee, but just looking at it, I don't even get how to fill it out -- all the off and on and some kind of numbers. I am tired of new and improved, I guess. ...
I recently accepted a position at a local hospital after nearly 9 years at my current job (long story, involves outsourcing, blah, blah, blah). My new position wil be VR editing and this is a first for me. The platform being used is Ex Editor. If there is anyone out there with experience wtih this platform and can offer some insight/advice, I'd appreciate it. I've been working with ExText at my current job so I think the very basics will be close but as I said I'm new to editing s ...
Wouldn't it make more sense if, with our improved digital and fiberoptic technology, the reports sounded BETTER instead of worse? I guess it is more about convenience -- they can dictate in the bathroom, on the soccer field, in the locker room, checking out at the grocery store, or riding a motorcycle. . . ...
our sound quality is so poor most of the time. You ought to be able to hear clear as a bell, but I think it is worse than in the olden days. Sounds like everybody is across the ocean, talking between two tin cans. ...
I know they are based in my state of California. I tried to apply with them when I first started working on-line. At the time they did not want a newbie, though I did have about 25 years of experience at that time. Of course they were right about me being newbie to on-line transcribing. Now it makes me laugh. ...
Is Transcription, Technology and Support the same company as TTS that everyone says is awful to work for and management is bad?
I am afraid to apply at companies that have 2 names and keep advertising for help. That can't be a good sign.

Hi there people,
I want to know from those who've attended or graduated from Andrews...are you taught technology in depth? I've gotten the impression that Andrews glosses it over. Also, do you get webinars and such?

Now the Q is being so underhanded, I am scared to death I am not going to be able to figure out how to find my pay stub on the new system. Probably just my low self-worth talking now. Is MQ still going to figure lines and gross pay? How will we ever know if any of it is right (like we have a clue now)? ...
Anyone know anything about working for Transcription, Technology, and Support? I am looking for UP TO DATE information on them, preferably from someone who has worked there or is working there. ...
I have just been offered a job and accepted with TTS. I have been able to avoid VR for quite sometime, but will now be doing this. I have heard good and bad so not sure what to expect. Just curious to know pros and cons with TTS?Also curious what to expect with doing VR? 75% of my work will be VR, but mostly clinic account and only 15% of ESL's. Any thoughts and/or opinions or anyone who works there, what do you think? Thanks! ...
Does anyone have any information on this company. Someone told me they were great and I should apply. How is work availability? Management? Pay? Thanks. ...
Most posts on here are negative so I just wanted to post a positive one...I have 20+ years experience in medical transcription and have recently started with Transcription Technology & Support and thus far they are by far one of the better companies I have worked for...very happy to have made the move to them. Run out of work on occassion but very rare, pay is fair, and everyone I have had any contact with has been very nice and willing to help, communication is excellent when I need a ...
The people who programmed, designed, whatever, Editscript have added nice little features, like the red box, and the speeding up dictation feature when the dictator says nothing. So, I started thinking about the red box and other features. I decided I would not check the box that slows down the silent parts of the dictation. Well, guess what? It sped me up editing-wise like crazy and I can hear when the dictation blips and, if need be, I can rewind for a couple of seconds and c ...
Any former or present employees of TTS out there that can tell me what it's like working for TTS? I've been told that working on the eScription platform on a certain account, I could make up to over 400 LPH. I've never heard that & I've never done that at any of the companies I've worked for.
Is it a good company to work for? Do they support & nurture their MTs?

After 17 years of working for a local clinic and building relationships and making their work my top priority, the most recent 'upgrade' to their system left me without work or income. They never even contacted me. One day I logged on like normal and didn't find any work on the work list. I waited a couple of hours and checked again - nothing. I contacted the IT guy who just matter-of-factly told me that their newest upgrade over the previous weekend made it impossible for me to r ...
I wrote this essay about the negative impact VR and outsourcing has had on this field. I thought you guys might appreciate it.
HOW TECHNOLOGY KILLED THE MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION FIELD
Long before I began working as a medical transcriptionist in 1993, others had been making a good living in the field for many years. For those unaware, medical transcriptionists (sometimes referred to as medical language specialists) are responsible for producing patients' medical records.
